Too many cooks spoil the broth, this thing had a bunch of producers from a bunch of countries involved; all with their own ideas of how they wanted the movie to turn out

3. Video game adaptation made long after the game had it's commercial and social peak, made by some no-name animation studio who has only done barbie movies and the new bob the builder show that everyone hates before now.

Critically? Videogame movies suck. perior.

Commercially? The Ratchet & Clank fans are too old to watch it in theaters. And for kids it would be competing with freaking Zootopia for attention.

Just look at that generic Playstation-3 looking poster.

My friend and I just went to go see it.
And I hadn't played much of Ratchet & Clank.

It was exactly what I expected. A movie that moves through itself very quickly leaving little time to explain or develop characters with cliche plotpoints and writing.

That being said, I had fun. Probably because I was in a theater with my friend, so we could point out the subtle things. It's a shame we can't ever get a genuinely well constructed video game movie, though.
>>
>>82363746
But isn't that exactly what it is?

The movie itself is fucking bland as shit, bringing in all star actors who don't have any interesting aspects as characters and zero chemistry to take screen time away from the original cast and lacks a lot of the imagination the games had
It also doesn't help that thanks to shit like Zootopia and Inside Out, pretentious critics want every kids film to be heavy handed message loaded bullshit instead of just simple films with simple plots

It wasn't a proper adaptation of the first game. Should've stuck to making Chairman Drek the main villain, and save the other guy for a potential sequel.
>>
>>82363969
Most video games don't work well as movies because of the way the media are different, interactivity being one of the most important factors. Undertale is a game made specifically to deconstruct certain video game tropes. The story would not work at all in any other medium.

>It wasn't a proper adaptation of the first game.
Insomniac really doesn't like the first game's Ratchet and how he was a selfish prick so we never had a chance to getting a proper retelling of that story.
>>
>>82363969
Undertale relies a lot on its game mechanics/visual style to present its story. Not saying its impossible, but I think whoever made it would have to be pretty ambitious.

I think you completely misread what I said.

Insomniac, the developers of Ratchet and Clank, did not like the end product of Ratchet's character in the first game. So much that they decided to get a new VA for him to distance the character even further and it's why they dodged making a remake for such a long time.

I personally thought it would have been great to have asshole ratchet back as that could have made for a good character arc in the movie.

Adapting a story from one medium to another is difficult, especially when those stories have different scopes. A film is only 100~ minutes and most traditionally fall into a 3 act story whereas video game stories are much long with a much consistent kind of pacing.

That doesn't even begin on what the creators of the film take away from the video game experience.

Video games trying to make movies never made sense to me anyway. Video games are a higher level of entertainment than movies and tv. They're not passive, you are in the story in a video game. Going back down to the passive experience of film robs a video games narrative of it's drive.

Hyperbole and shitposting aside
Take out the gameplay and Red Dead is just another decent western, not great just decent. And if it ever got a movie would be seen as such.

Movies are an entirely different playing field than games. Even the most "cinematic" video games have only ever been meh at best by movie standards. Adapt any game and the critical outcry will be how it's a lazier version of a better movie.

I could be wrong come Warcraft, but then again I don't know dick about the Warcraft games either so I don't know.

>>
>>
>>
>>82369541
I understand what you got to say, but you must understand: I am a hopelessly cynical man.
Hell, all of us on this site are cynical. We're all so cynical that most of us can barely like something beyond a point we all call decent. Where we don't hate it, but at the same time we don't love it.
To this day, I see Red Dead as an amazing western because regardless of how many times I replay it, it always reminds me of the first time I picked it up. RDR's diverse gameplay, method of story telling, and excellent process of character development (that being that you simply watch every guy do his thing until you understand him, sort of mirroring real life) pretty much set up what I would later look for in games. It became what mattered to me.
So, you can think what you think of RDR and I will certainly respect it, as I have no control over what you think. But to me, it will always be a gem that has earned a 10/10 across the board, because it has the power to kill my cynicism.
>>
The bizarre thing is that the game's version of the movie is actually significantly better than the theater version. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBhqh1qYntU A lot of the scenes brought over from the movie are edited to remove a lot of unnecessary jokes and dialogue and are way more snappy as a result. The scene introducing Clank in the game is brief but gives you everything you need to know and is enjoyable to watch. The movie version is like three minutes longer and full of irrelevant bullshit.
>>
>>82370213
Not to mention the game makes the universe seem a lot bigger. You visit at least a dozen different planets all with different looks and species of aliens. Meanwhile the movie is what, 4 locations? Veldin, Quartu, Kerwan and deplanetizer if my memory serves.

Saw the film a short while ago. Spoilers below.

It had some good jokes, but everything else felt forced and slow.

The Daxter, Sly, and the third character I can't seem to remember bit was okay, but quite pointless. It did show Sly's movie form and a very detailed Daxter.

Plumbing Guy showed up in the crowd and after the credits.

MR. ZURKON WILL BE in it for a short bit and only say about 5 different lines.

There wasn't a whole lot of Ratchet and Clank being together or building their relationship.

The Omni-Wrench was used for combat only ONCE.

The RYNO makes an appearance which included an on-screen breakdown of the name (with a trademark being stamped to it)

Quark was the worst part of the film. It would've worked fine if Quark had assigned Ratchet the mission and gone to some vacation planet under the guise of an ultra-secret mission.

Nefarious was annoying and did need Lawrence to make him complete. The teaser with him at the end came off as obligatory what with most movies dropping hints at sequels that might not ever happen. I blame Marvel for that.

Stallone did well as the side villain. But there were times where I couldn't tell it was him.

There was a bunch of other iffy bits, but it would take too long to address them.

It was dumb, but I laughed at "dust and gas."

That was only because of that 1 st person scene at the end and because of Dwayne Johnson.
>>
It had its moments. I'm not going to say it's bad. I'm not going to say it's good either.

The best thing would've been to not make Drek into a massive putz and not blow their load on Dr. Nefarious so quickly.

The game apparently is the fastest selling R&C game ever and has reviewed pretty well. I myself had a lot of fun with the game. It had it's flaws (cut planets, crappy Insomniac Museum, too many reused weapons from the Future games when there should've at least been more reused weapons from R&C1), but it still manages to be a good R&C game that may not be as great as GC or UYA or ACiT, but it's easily around the range of DL or ToD or the original game itself. I wonder how Insomniac will interpret the success of the game alongside the failure of the movie?

Also is anyone kinda looking forward to Song of the Deep?

Movie is paced horribly and moves way too fast.

The movie itself acts like its trying to rush through

Wasn't terrible. Just meh.

We're not talking about World of Warcraft though. The movie is based off Warcraft I.

My sister and I played Jak and Daxter so much when I was younger. I used to confuse it with Ratchet and Clank, which I never played.

Even before the new game came out /v/ has had pretty consistent Ratchet & Clank threads. Hell, I'd argue that R&C is one of those vidya series with minimal shitposting most of the time. I mean there is still some shitposting in R&C threads occasionally, but you know, it's /v/.
>>
>>82379965
All out of games with good stories would make bad movies because the gameplay parts add a lot to the impact of the stories. RDR's story has more impact because you are the one making the decisions and pulling the trigger. The end sequence would have far less impact if it was just a cutscene for instance.
>>
So this is the Batman Vs Superman of vidya?
>>
>>82380610
No, because everyone loves the game.
>>
>>82380610

No, because Batman vs Superman was actually bad.

To be fair a scene after the credits shows Nefarious emerge from the wreckage of the Deplanetizer, completely in his robot form.

Personally I feel like it may be a set up for a sequel.

Al is a different character. The guys name is just "The Plumber"

>>82366491
>His robot form is retconned
In UYA it was established that nefarious was a squishy before being turned into a robot. It's not a retcon to now show him before that point

It IS however a cheap ploy at trying to pander to fans since the movie is ridden with corporate decisions. TJ Fixman abandoned the movie 2 years ago after creative differences with the director mainly regarding style of humor. Seeing how the final product is full of cliche 'kids movie' jokes, it's clear what happened
