I was like eight or so years old when this show was airing on TV and even then I was ravenously hungry for details about Gadget's background. I was definitely the target audience, and if I wanted it, I'm sure other viewers did too, but the show was maddeningly sparse on them. I remember there being one episode which featured the guy who designed all of his 'gadgets', but in this really frustratingly scant way. Why they never gave him an origin story I'll never know.
But hell, maybe they did in some subsequent series, I never watched any of those.

Also, working on an American show would be a long-term commitment unless the Americans are willing to change studios every season.
Then again with the low standards and the long production times it might be easy work after all. The anime industry can fully produce a 12 episode show from start to finish in the same time frame that an American studio completes a single 10 minute episode.

I remember one episode has a flashback to "Old Gangster Days" showing some guy using a Gatling gun that shot potatoes (I don't even) and they showed Gadgets as a baby in a carriage and he was holding his rattle with that robot hand from his hat.
