I don't think I can. I'm sure there are things that I'd consider better, but I can't really think of anything. Even if something is better, The Dover Boys is still pretty much the perfect cartoon.

I've always wondered - is that hopping sailor a reference to anything? He still works as a goofy standalone joke that interrupts the scene everytime he appears, but I can't help but feel there's some 30's or 40's pop culture joke that I'm not getting.

Some would probably say Duck Amuck or What's Opera, Doc, but I'm going to go with The Great Piggy Bank Robbery for probably being both the most dense and competent pun delivery of all time.

The Dover Boys, is towards the top of top tier regardless of specifics though.

I'll steal it.

I saw Space Jam when it came out and haven't watch it since and I had no idea who they were back then.

I first found out about the Dover Boys and saw the short on Youtube back in the 2007 and it still stands as my favorite WB short.

>>82052663
It's a parody of an old series of novels (I think) called the Rover Boys.

A 74-yr-old cartoon is better than most of the shit made today.
>>
>>82053044
That shouldn't be too surprising. They had very large budgets and teams of creators who really were at the cutting edge of their medium. It's not even fair necessarily to compare the old stuff to day.
>>
>>82053329
How does that make any sense? The equipment is more advanced and the process is less grueling, why shouldn't they expect an increase in quality?
It's like saying that a modern army with a low budget shouldn't hope to compare to a top-of-the-line army from 70 years ago. It's still leaps and bounds ahead of the old one, they shouldn't have any excuse for losing.
>>
>>82053453
It's like comparing the Apollo Era Nasa computers to modern cellphones. A single cellphone has more processor power than the entirety of fucking country did in the 1960's, but the tech was technically better then because it was bleeding edge, overseen by the best minds the human species had to offer, and there was NO fucking room for mistakes. The technology today is better, but it's also more distributed and open. Being a programmer or hard-ware manufacturer today is basically just above being a cashier at McDonalds. Lots of lazy and inept minds who can comprehend and technically do the job means it won't be nearly as good as the people who were limited to a terrifying degree, but who understood it at levels that no one since could really hope to.
>>
>>82053329
>They had very large budgets and teams of creators who really were at the cutting edge of their medium.

That's no different from today. But instead of creative executives running the business, you have corporate suits who want to tilt the scales of Money:Effort as much as possible.
>>
>>82053634
That's the other part. Creative drive and innovation isn't geared towards maximum output given the limitations. It's geared towards working with the limitations to produce the barest quality vs the minimal cost..

And in that sense. I honestly do think that modern people are doing a great job. The result is a fucking shitshow, but damn it they are pulling off the job they've been given.
>>
>>82053727
From a business standpoint, yes. They're doing a fantastic job. They (usually) can't be blamed for doing what they're paid to do. Especially since it's working - all the 'garbage' that goes on for several seasons is a testament to that.

>What's Opera, Doc?
>>
>>82053791
Exactly. I don't really blame modern creators for making shit that's worse than what was made damn near 100 years ago. That's what they're supposed to do, and when you look at the larger picture, they find really impressive ways of delivering.. I hate the culture that demands it.
>>
>>82053854
This one gets put on a pedestal, but I think Rabbit of Seville was the better opera episode.

why is this cartoon soo perfect? The humor, the narrator, the visual is great.

>why shouldn't they expect an increase in quality?

Because something being easier to do doesn't mean it's easier to do correctly. Also, technology hasn't gotten so much better than you can produce theatrical quality shorts on a TV budget.

It's like complaining that a b-movie studio in 2016 can't make something like Star Wars.

Hm, Dover Boys is very memorable since it's very different and all characters are one-offs, so you're not seeing variations on gags used in previous shorts. Early 40s Jones did have a lot of other good experimental shorts like Conrad the Sailor or To Duck or Not to Duck.

>>82053984
I agree that Seville is funnier, though if Maurice Noble is your thing than that would push What's Opera to the front.
>>
>>82052263

I think it's just supposed to be goofy and weird.

Remember, when this cartoon came out way back in 1942, NOBODY GOT IT. It nearly got Chuck Jones fired.
>>
It is pretty much perfect and my absolute favorite of all time.
>>

Shit bro thats a tough one, some of the best I could think of were:

>Piggy Bank Robbery
Great Clampett Animation and of course there was that great Brave and the Bold homage.

>The one with Daffy were he parodies a bunch of famous, yeah you know the one I'm talking about.
>>
>>82060235

Its funny you mention that. Apparently prior to this cartoon Chuck Jones got hassled for making cartoons that were too Disney-esque. At the time Clamped cartoons were all the rage, and everybody was being pushed to be as wacky as he was, hence the Dover Boys. I think maybe some of the hatred it got was also due to all the cost cutting things it did, like is use of angular limited animation shapes as well as smears all revolutionary for the time.
Also didn't Jones make a cartoon in the 60s, that finally got him fired, which was it?

What was the name of the unfunny cartoon that ripped off all the character designs from Dover Boys? I can't remember.
>>
>>82053453
I think a large part of why we don't have animation like is anymore is because of new laws. I think back then you were able to have a large team of cell painters for a very cheap price. That's how it was for Disney at least. They hard a big team of women drawing the cells, and since they were women, they were paid way less.
