Out of curiosity as someone who doesn't read a lot of comics, how often does batman use a bat as a weapon?

Third movie when?

In Arkham Knight, you could pick one up and wack a few thugs with it.

Do you mean a baseball or cricket bat, or living, flying mammal bats? The latter is more common than the former.

As often as Spider-man uses spiders or Wolverine uses wolverines, but much less often than Catwoman uses cats or Penguin uses penguins.

Read some comics and find out.

Not often.
But Bombshells Batwoman does.

How do you get started? How do you choose which batman (for example) issues are worth picking up? Hasn't bats been around in comic form since the 30's? Seems like a lot of catch up.

I'm sure if you look hard enough, you could dig up some silver age shit of Batman using a bat.

Start at the comic in which batman debuted, and read every comic following. It's only a few thousand comics

He's more likely to use them as an escape.
At times he has used them to fly but it's usualy just to obscure him.

Well obscure and distract

Try out Year One, The Long Halloween, Dark Victory and The Dark Knight Returns, in that order.
All of those are pretty good, and they're easy to get.

You're joking right? Wouldn't that cost a fortune?
