>There are people on /co/ who aren't hype that Gerard Way is writing for DC's Young Animal imprint just because he was in a band that it was cool to hate a while back
>>
>Not liking his Spiderverse issue
I hated it until I read it, it was fucking good. I'd give him another shot at something.
>>
>>81994150
Read Umbrella Academy anon. It's great and very heavily influenced by Morrison's Doom Patrol run, which is what makes me think he'll be great at actually writing Doom Patrol itself
>>
>>81993758
>because he was in a band

his band was pretty big

still is even if it doesn't exist anymore

WHY THE FUCK IS HE WRITING COMICS?
>>
>>81994360
Because he's actually pretty good at it, suprisingly. People can do more than one thing
>>
>>81994360
>WHY THE FUCK IS HE WRITING COMICS?
Why like what is his reasoning for doing so?
I would imagine it's because he likes fucking comic books. I seem to recall hearing hes been a comic fan for some time and i think back in the early mcr days he used to dress up in some kinda super hero gear on stage or some shit. I dunno.

or else you mean why is he writing comics like 'what do they have letting this guy write comics'? Probably because dark horse took a chance on publishing from him due to him being well known as a rock star and the comic he put out (umbrella academy) was pretty well received. think it won an eisner award the year it came out too.

So i figure based on that DC decided to take him on and give him an imprint.
>>
>>81993758

no i mean that he has a pretty set career already, he could tour playing nothing but old stuff if he wanted

instead he is gonna do something where success is not only something he is gonna have to work very hard for (with little in return for his efforts), but knowing the interwebs, it will be very easy for him to have the internet turn on him
>>
>>81994558
It's possible he..
A: Doesn't give a shit about the money and just wants to do something hes probably dreamed about And...
B: doesnt give that much of a shit if the internet turns on him. I mean the guys in my chemical romance. He's probably already had a truckton of bitchy shit flung his way and can get pussy (or dick?) at the drop of a hat. The opinions of /co/ are unlikely to matter overmuch to him.

>>

That's not exactly what happened. More like he wanted to make comics and get into that field while the band was a sidething that just blew up.

I think they're alright. Nothing outstanding, but they're ok

People hate them because its cool to hate them, and it's cool to hate them because they are the kind of thing your sister was in to.

The Black Parade was pretty much the poster album for an entire subculture. How many other bands can say that? Nirvana with Nevermind, The Sex Pistols with Never Mind the Bollocks, beyond that, fuck knows. As shitty as the subculture might have been, that's still an impressive feat.

I`m not excited because I know it's going to be a failure, just like most of these "We want the teenage manga reading audience" things are. I like Umbrellla Academy, but DC is obviously not doing a good job at marketing or managing this new imprint. People don't know that it is even out, nor what audience it's for exactly. Plus, Gerard is the the "face" of the imprint, he is the biggest name on it and the bridge between Main Publisher, Artists and Imprint managers, something he has no experience with.

Even if it is a failure, if it's good, I'd rather get a few decent stories than none at all.

Plus I like Way's work. Anything that gets him a bigger profile in the industry can't be a bad thing.

I'm excited mostly because he's shown himself to be a good comic writer and is a student of Morrison.
>>

He got a BFA in comics, and always wanted to work in comics, long before his band got popular. The fact that he got famous for his band was an accident.

>>
>>81995324
>People don't know that it is even out,

But it's not out yet. Not even the solicitations. And the respones to the announcement have been overwhelmingly positive so far, compared to DC's recent track record.
>>
>>81994360
the only reason he got into a band was 9/11 same with Tom King joining the CIA. He had an internship at CN then.
>>
>>81997300
There's only so much you can do with an editorial-mandated tie-in issue of a corporate crossover.

He had some quite interesting ideas regarding to the relationship of the girl and the spider that would deserve some more exploring, a shame the issue was hijacked by Spider-Ham and Slott's spiderverse bullshit.
>>
>>81995324
Way's hyping it up with his fans.
>>
>>81997456
I guess they both profited vastly from experiences in such unusual professions. Most comic book writers didn't lead a very interesting life prior to breaking in and it mostly shows. (Steranko, Kirby, Larry Hama not whistanding)
>>
>>81994150
It was okay for a one off but hard to judge as it was so short and didn't really go anywhere. The art and design is what really elevated it out of forgettable

>>81995324
Eh, let's wait and see. Way is supposed to be the Luke to Morrison's Obi-Wan. Most of Way's fans in his social media circle seems to like the idea of him doing comics and it was pretty easy to shill this to my non-comic book reading friends.

Honestly, I was one of those people who never jumped into Umbrella Academy because I didn't like his band, but all I heard was that it was phenomenal. While I began years ago as one of the people OP is describing, what I've heard discussed by other anons about his premise for Doom Patrol sounds great, and even though some of the other premises that look to be published by Young Animal seem different than what I'm accustomed to reading, it all sounds interesting. I'm eager to give each of its books at least a few issues.
>>
>>81998417
Give Umbrella Academy a read, its great, especially considering these kind of things where people famous for other things have a pop at writing comics usually turns to shit.

Which are you the most hype for?
DOOM PATROL – This September, in the spirit of Grant Morrison's legendary run on the series, along with other classic incarnations of the characters, writer Gerard Way and artist Nick Derington will put their unique stamp on the world's strangest heroes taking on the universe's strangest villains.
>SHADE, THE CHANGING GIRL – An alien takes over the body of a 16-year-old bully and must face the challenges of being a stranger in a foreign land, plus the consequences of a life she didn't live. Star Wars’ Moving Target writer Cecil Castellucci and artist Marley Zarcone explore themes of madness, alienation, and the bizarre in this sci-fi thriller, with covers by Becky Cloonan. The new series hits shelves in October.
>CAVE CARSON HAS A CYBERNETIC EYE – Writers Gerard Way and Jon Rivera, along with artist Michael Avon Oeming take readers on a strange adventure with DC Comics’ Silver Age character Cave Carson, his cybernetic eye and his college–age daughter as they travel to dark places deep in the earth and mind. Catch this new series in October.
>MOTHER PANIC – Meet Violet Paige, a celebrity heiress by day and brutal vigilante by night as she takes on the underbelly of Gotham City’s high society. Hitting shelves in November, the series is written by Gerard Way and Jody Houser with art by Tommy Lee Edwards.

There's no such thing anymore. They want another Vertigo. Or rather, they want another Sandman, and the name Vertigo can't make that happen again.

>>
>>82001010
What?
Aren't they "Rebirthing" Vertigo too?
This doesn't really feel like a Vertigo book, most star teen girls and have whacky scenerios, Vertigo books are paranormal trillers, with the occasional hardboiled crime story and that fad of spy stories after Iraq.

And at this point, Vertigo is settling for the new Fables, something they've tried and failed to achieve for years. A new Sandman wouldn't really work in this day and age, too episodical.

Of course they are. Its always popular to hate what preteen/teen girls like. Whether that be music or tv shows or what have you. Go ahead, look back on things that were popular to hate over the past 20 or so years and I guarantee one recurring factor for most is that preteen and/or teenage girls like it.

See:
Miley Cyrus
One Direction
Pitch Perfect
Justin Beiber
My Chemical Romance
The Spice Girls
The Kardashians
Romcoms in general
Twilight
True Blood

Etc.

I'm not trying to play some massive "hurr feminists were right" play, but if girls like it, pop culture tends to deride it.

Aside from maybe women's basketball, most female sports tend to be met with indifference more than anything.

The thing about MCR is I think most of their hatred comes from their unrelenting sincerity and theatrical melancholy. It's okay for media to be brooding or sad as long as it has additional accessible elements like masculinity. You see this with a lot of video games nowadays where the protagonist is very "emo" but also a macho man so it makes it okay. If you take the archetype and strip out that masculinity but the character is just as competent then that character is received much poorer.

Can I (still) by the entirety of the Umbrella Academy series by the way?
