Anyone on /co/ actually want to do animation as a profession?

Post any amateur animation you've done, or if you do have professional experience, share it.

Pic related was the most recent thing I made.

I would love to be an animator but I have poor fine motor control so I can't draw worth a damn.
I did however go to school for new media where
I picked up some flash/aftereffects and 3d animation. It was mainly for motion graphics though.
I did end up working at an animation studio that
made cartoons for a time but I was just in the
render department.

I was until half of the art team and all of QA got laid off today due to budget cuts...

I laugh at everyone who chooses art and animation as a career. You think because they are so well off at the moment with patreons and donations but nothing last forever. There will be a time where 40 year old furry artists, animators, and drawfags crowd the streets begging for money. Enjoy your useless talent. Life will never be like the early 1970-2000 Era of animation. You will be replaced by younger and better animators and artists faster and faster as the years go on. Kill yourself now so I won't have to feel awkward when your filthy ass asks me for spare change.

Commissioned to do these last summer for a festival. Forgive the resolution; they wanted it that size and I never bothered making full HD variants

I was always interested in animation, did it for a while when I was a pre-teen (flipnotes era) but slowly realized that I just didn't have the patience for it. Quit drawing completely for a few years after that, just recently got back into it but I feel like I'm really behind.

I haven't done a lot but here's a more recent animation I did.

Think I got what it takes to be an animator?

that's actually pretty decent, just a bit flat looking

>>81970810
what kind of work do you do now? I'm sure you could do some sort of animation style that doesn't require as much precision.

>>81972873
cool reel, though I'd suggest scrapping the kim kardashian part altogether. some of the later stuff was really really cool.

>>81977700
there's a charm to it. even as a hobby art can be very therapeutic.

>>81978633
that's pretty cool, the first one is specially fluid

>>81979058
just keep at it, the wanting won't go away anyway, might as well scratch the itch.

>>81981984
that's pretty cool.

>>81983714
sure, that's enough to be AN animator but you might as well strive to be a good one.

So stick guy here, where the fuck do I even start if I want to do animation stuff? Just as a hobby of course, I have a career that provides for me.

I've been meaning to check out this 'opentoonz' thing that just came out, as I have a background in programming and could something something open source.

>as a profession
Not anymore.

I don't have the motivation or drive to be a professional animator. I couldn't even muster up the motivation to work on commissions.

I haven't made a complete drawing in over two years let alone an animation.
>>
Why bother?

Everything you can do can be outsourced to Korea and the Phillipines for a fraction of the cost.

Last animation I made a few years ago over the course of a few weeks. Been dropping in & out of college working part / full time and not motivated to do animation anymore.

I did do stand up for a year though before giving that up too.

I really do want to be an amateur animator and then move up onto professional one day. Kind of like Ian JQ who went from doing Nockforce to Steven Universe.

The guy's my rolemodel. And I feel that I will make it someday, if I can just get better at my artwork and get into the right schools.

On another note, I am interesting in doing an animated short but I don't know where to start. I just got a drawing tablet and sketchbook and am willing to spend the next couple of weeks on some story and publish it to Youtube. Happy-Harry's HuHa2Howto's is right and fine, and so is Preston Blair's Animation 1 Booklet. Haven't read Richard Williams' book yet.

I've got my BS in DMA but I haven't had much luck in the job field beyond a short internship. Right now I'm really just trying to get better at everything.

Pic related is just what I'm drawing at the moment. Aside from sketching and coloring, I've been teaching myself to get better at 3d modeling and rendering. Unfortunately haven't really done much actual animation since college. Just a pretty basic animatic. After I finish a handful of current modeling projects I've got a little idea to do an animation mixing some 3d and handdrawn.

Right now I'm looking for something in the audio/video production or graphic design field.
I spent the last little while working on personal projects to add to my portfolio and ended up working on some stuff with friends.

3D animation is probably the most viable path for me right now.
The biggest problem is that I have high and probably unreasonable standards for myself.
besides the principles of character animation I would also have to have a much better grasp of a bunch of 3d stuff like rigging, lighting, and composting which is all a bit much right now.

I may as well post the main project that was kicking around during my time at the studio.

I'm heading down the art/animation path for college next semester, but I haven't really done much recently worth showing. I used to do a lot of 3D stuff, mostly first person animations for game mods.

This explosion turned out alright though.

> if you do have professional experience, share it.

I have semi-professional experience, although I’m not really sure what qualifies as “professional.”

I’ve been able to (halfway) support myself for the past 7 months working as a freelance animator. Just got my BFA from a state art school about a year ago, and since then I made the big move across the country with some friends to LA. I think that’s helped me get the amount of success I’ve had - just being in the right place and meeting the right people (almost every gig I’ve gotten has been through a friend of a friend.)

A big problem is that I’m horribly unmotivated a lot of the time. I’d like to get employed at a studio, cause I think I could use that kind of structure of going to an office, having co-workers, etc. Working from home is a bitch (I’ve been on the internet pretty much all day).
I’m about a mile away from both Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon, but I haven’t had the balls to apply for anything. I did apply twice to work on Rick and Morty’s 3rd season (studio also not far away), but no dice.

I could probably make my life a lot better if I could just pick myself up off the floor. Still just need to get a better psychological hold on myself I guess. I’m just usually too depressed to do anything for myself. I rarely feel creative, and when I do, I shoot myself down before I can start working on anything for myself because I worry it won't be worth it. So I get stuck doing work that isn’t very inspiring to me. Granted, that’s been hit and miss and I have had fun on some projects. I really shouldn’t be complaining. Basically I’m lucky that I’ve gotten the work that I have, and that I have a very supportive family.

I guess my “advice" is be a motivated person. Don’t know how to do that, but yeah. Being as nice as you can and doing the best work you can also helps.

Sorry for the rant, just needed to let it out I guess.

Rush jobs are always hard
I think the main thing irking me is the unnecessary spinning around when the bullet fires and such. Unless that's a plot point (bending bullets or whatever) you can achieve a similar effect by having the bullet go in a straight or slight curve and then animate the "camera" moving around it
But still, I look forward to future stuff

Been drawing forever, did some flash in HS
In college now for 3D animation and I have a job lined up at a small commercial animation studio this summer that I'm pretty excited for. I mean, I eventually want to animate for a bigger company, but I really like working with a smaller team where I have more freedom.

I never did any real animation until i got to college when i did my first bouncing ball.

Isn't it stupidly difficult to get any animation work these days? How many shows are animated in the states anymore?
