Rossiya had stupid names for this movie. At first it was called "The First Avenger: Civil War", then it got renamed as "The Collapse of Avengers" so dumb Russian audience would go watch it. Now it's "The First Avenger: The Confrontation"
>>
Okay, seriously, why no Spider-man in any of the marketing but the last shot of that one trailer?

It's baffling to me.

From the spoilers I've seen it seems like he gets more screen time than Antman.

>>

They did it in a bunch of other countries too because Civil War has a different meaning in most countries.

It'snot political, it's practical.
>>
>>81963660
Are Russians really so insecure that they're unwilling to be seen going to a movie called "Captain America"?
>>
>>81963673

Always leave the audience wanting more.

Antman has a movie already.

Spidey is the one you want to see, so that's the one they hide.

I believe Germans also call Captain America movies The First Avenger movies

Ha.

How so?

Maybe I understand practical as have a different meaning, but elaborate, please. And please try to also convince me you are not a shill.
>>
>>81963741
Different cultural context. I don't the exact details, but that's the official statement.
>>
>>81963725
It's not just Russia. When the first Cap movie came out, most countries named it "First Avenger" or some shit. Now they're forced to be consistent and call the other parts "First Avenger" too, even though Cap is probably the most popular superhero from the Avengers team in Russia.
>>
>>81963673
Antman is always on screen
>>
>>81963757

>>
In Korea, they didn't translated Civil War. It's literally called Cap 3 Civil War (캡틴 아메리카: 시빌 워)

What if China did the same.

It's easier to market something that doesn't remind viewers of a horrific, bloody conflict in their history.

So I guess it's political too.

Anyways, I'm unemployed and live with my parents, so I'd love to be a shill. Unfortunately, Marvel doesn't pay people to shitpost on a Mongolian imageboard or I'd be rich.

Yeah, The Huntsman: Winter's War is called Snow White and the Huntsman 2, even though there's no Snow White in it, just so the general audience doesn't get confused.
>>
>>81963834

Why, is there a country that hasn't had such a conflict, and only there is the full name in use?

Here I thought they used the term just for that purpose, a title to describe the conflict contained in the story.

>>81963757
>>81963741
>>81963843
Okay, let me try to explain this whole thing better.

In English, Civil War means a split in a country.

While most countries have the words "civil" and " war", the term Civil War doesn't mean anything in those languages.

Hell, certain countries don't actually have a term for "Civil War", just another name for the conflicts they underwent.
>>
>>81963759
>Different cultural context.
Yeah, the cultural context of "We don't want our population thinking about civil war".
>>
>>81963830
>to avoid confusion with the real-life Chinese Civil War that occurred right after WWII.
i didnt know the chinese government censored calendars too. do they know about the 60s yet?
>>
>>81963933
That doesn't make sense. The fact that the words "civil" and "war" don't necessarily mean the same thing together in other languages shouldn't have any bearing on this. There's got to be an equivalent concept in those languages of "war within one country"
>>
>>81963933
If that's true, then they can leave the name and those countries might learn a little more about other cultures.
>>
>>81963933
"Гpaждaнcкaя вoйнa" literally means Civil War in Russian.
>>
>>81963965

There is but those governments don't want people reminded of such things.

Not very clear or convincing on the second part because of how unclearly my first concern was addressed.

It looks worse that ever now thanks to you.
>>
>>81964020
Yeah, and that's the name of a specific 20th century conflict in Russia.
You can bet your ass that there'd be groups of people protesting that title - people who won't watch the movie anyway, of course, but I'm sure they'd be comparing it to, say, calling a movie "Avengers: Holocaust" or something.
So the official distributor decided to play it safe.
>>
>>81964342
"Civil War" refers to a specific American conflict too.
>>
>>81964440
Certainly, but the American Civil War was in 1861. I personally know people who were alive during the Russian one.

Give it a hundred more years, and people will be able to make jokes about stuff like the Holocaust.

>>
>>81964440

>>
>>81964570
Really? Wow.
>>
>>81963519
Something went wrong here.
>>
>>81964582
When you say "civil war" to an American they think of gray and blue guys shooting cannons at each other.
>>
>>81964657
fair enough, but it wasn't the first or last civil war in history. Civil war literally just means "war between people of the same country". Civil War doesn't mean two groups of Americans fighting, was my point.
>>
>>81964582
It's an American property so in this context yes the title alludes to their civil war.
>>
>>81964679
It just means 'war between two factions of the same country'. It has nothing to do with the American one in specific, besides being the same type of war. It's not a nod to history, it's the definition of the type of conflict.
>>
>>81964670
Right, but all these other countries are changing the name because the phrase reminds them of a specific conflict. It just seems dumb.
>>
>>81963883
because the name "civil war" is way more sensitive in some places than others.

in the US, it ain't no thing. In china, where their civil war was much longer, nastier, ended up with them getting partially conquered by Japan, and most importantly still in living memory....I can see why they would avoid the term.

>>81963913
don't be an idiot.

>>81963933
excellent point.
>>
>>81964716
I agree. Unless it happened recently, in which way it may remind people about very painful times if they were alive to see it, which I think was the point. Civil wars are very not pretty.

Otherwise, yeah, it should bear no more meaning than the definition of it.

>>81964599

DC has a villain with the name too.
>>
>>81964758

>>
>>81964803

>>
>>81964820

>>
>>81964737

You can just say outright that some nations would rather not remind the population that civil war is an option. You know, like trying to hide sex from teenagers.

>>81963933
The word "civil" seems to be quite broad in english.

In estonian we don't have a proper translation for that word and we basically translate "civil war" to "homewar".
>>
>>81963933
I think it's easy to translate to any language though.

Still nobody really likes the US so calling it Captain America would put some people off, it's understandable.

Also America is a continent and believe it or not the rest of the world doesn't immediately think of the US when they see America.

The best worst brazilian movie title translation was the one for Saving Mr. Banks.

Here it became: "Walt Disney nos bastidores de Mary Poppins". Just google translate this if you want to know what it means.
>>
>>81967458
Yeah, I'm not a fan of the title translations. They do it here too and they are always terrible, and nobody ever uses the Portuguese title in conversation anyway.

What really bothers me is that aside from "Capitão América" which is too close and title-y to not translate, I guess, is that nobody translates the names in conversation irl. We say Iron Man and Hawkeye and BlackWidow and even Spider-man. Yet in the subtitles they pull shit like "Homem de Ferro" and "Gavião Arqueiro".

Only recently they've started using the english names. Daredevil was the first I noticed. They call the show demolidor, but the subs write 'daredevil' which sounds much much better to us.

I'm just happy they don't sub it like you guys do.

Uh, many people don't? 'Gavião Arqueiro' I rarely hear, but 'Viuva Negra' and 'Homem de Ferro' are used frequently.

Nobody uses 'Senhor das Estrelas' tho

The only one of those things that bothered me was when they kept using DAREDEVIL in the Netflix dub when they even made a logo for the brazilian version with 'Demolidor'. It's awful to hear all that dialogue in portuguese with only 'Daredevil' and 'Punisher' not being translated.

Not that I watch the dubbed version, but my dad watched and I found it odd

Iron Man and Spider-Man, maybe. But I'd be hard-pressed to find anyone in real life who uses Hawkeye rather than Gavião or Black Widow rather than Viúva.
