I barely even noticed the animu references. I was more interested in the world Way created. This is a universe where Spider-Man (and Daredevil?) seem to operate as open and officially recognized law enforcement, but still wear costumes and start superheroics at the age of nine. Peni has no secret identity and stands around in the street after the heroics as they load her suit into a van. She's known in "Gene-Pop magazines"; at first, the "gene" seems to stand for "generation", making it some tweeny shit, but then it's revealed that genetic engineering is common enough to be available (if unusually) to criminal thugs en masse. Oscorp exists in the universe, and cornered the market on "pyschogenetics".
I want to fucking explore that universe, man!
Aikman and Peni both introduced some very interesting universes, but Aikman's was crammed so full of content that I felt more like I was reading a Wikipedia article than a comic. SP//dr felt more organic in the way it presented itself. This is a matter of taste, of course.

I agree with you on the setting being interesting, but I also think that Sp//dr offered a lot of thematic uniqueness as well compared to something like Spider Gwen. With Spider Gwen, it really just felt like same shit different face. You had the same themes, balancing a regular life with superheroics, the whole "with great power" shit, etc. It was just regular ass Spider shit with the characters swapped around.
With Sp//dr you get a lot of different themes. Peni isn't motivated by any sense of guilt for failing to save anyone. There's no "with great power" bit from Uncle Ben or whatever. There's no trying to keep a secret identity and balance the heroics with regular life. It's really open to a different path of character development. There's a sense you get throughout, like on this page >>81932214 that she's trying to connect with the father she never really knew. Perhaps by taking up the mantle, she hopes to achieve some understanding of the man he was, to try to get closer to him in some way. That's a theme I really would have liked to see explored.
