Brock never let Rusty die, who seemed to be the priority. He probably got desensitized to the whole clone thing pretty quickly.

I feel that while ever the clone backup option was in place Brock was only really paid to keep Rusty alive. When you see him raging and putting his life on the line for the boys it was probably more about the personal rush of combat, considering how often they managed to kill themselves on a regular basis.
