Two threads ago the OP said he got banned (but he was still posting?). A lot of people might be working at this hour, which could explain the slowness.

Of course the /trash/ thread is cancerous, /trash/ is where cancer is categorically supposed to go, so only cancer can survive there
It sucks, but the only place we can actually exist is a board that hates us and will be glad when we're gone forever

Like Problem Sleuth, multiple fronts of interaction sustain and develop the comic entertainment.

Unlike Problem Sleuth, its broad level of characters and meaningless tasks make the comic very shallow and unsustainable.

Due to the meandering nature of the early acts no one will give a fuck about trolls unless they some sort of reading Stockholm syndrome and keep reading anyway.

Was there a reason he liked Dirk so much?
He seemed to legitimately like the guy inside of his overly dramatic rampages.

I think the problem with Act 6 is that is all objectively bad. It has a lot of bad boring stuff, but really it is just different from the Homestuck fell in love with, and thay combined with the weak parts and the years of pauses kind of soured the experience.

I think that the ending of Homestuck has convinced me that, while it's fine to have a lot of red herrings and ambiguity in a story, it's extremely important for the ending itself to be absolutely clear and unambiguous. Otherwise you end up with people filling in the blanks with increasingly complex explanations, and appreciation of the work gets bogged down in that logical exercises rather than emotional investment in thematic elements.

After the end, I just ended up naively thinking fanfics could fill the void.

There's so many written so well, people who put so much passion and writing ability in something that reads like a published book, but is actually a fanwank.

I found a great one about the kids being transported to Ancestor Alternia as an effect of the scratch, and seeing it was 36 chapters long I just dived it.

I loved it.

>>
>>81857700
P.S. Analyzing the logic puzzles in Homestuck was fun but it was exhausting. That's a fine tone for the bulk of the story, but the way it is now, I'm exhausted by the ending. These aren't conditions where catharsis can take place. Ideally, the ending would cause all of the tensions built up by the rest of Homestuck to be released. But instead, the ending is presented to us as yet another puzzle.

Rebels isn't over though.
I mean the Ahsoka thing is bullshit but I'm 95% sure that was mandated, Filoni believes Ahsoka's story is pretty much done moving forward in any way, he just left a caveat so that if some other fuckwit wanted to carry her on and was approved they have the ability to.

I'm being pretty serious. Fanfiction gives you a crutch in that backstories, characters, settings, etc are all done for you.

Ever notice how you sometimes lose track of a fanfiction once a new setting and or original character is introduced? That brainfuzz is because you see the writer's genuine ability come in and often times it will disappoint you.

The Umineko one is especially pathetic because he wasted 8 hours (end that's just the length of the finished video, he probably spents magnitudes more making it and reasoning it out) on a theory made up on things he clearly misinterpreted, things that go straight against declared canon, and pitching for a resolution for the story that doens't make sense from a writing standpoint.

It's like watching a 16-hours long flat earth society video.
You can't help but pity the sight of someone so dedicated to something that's so objectively wrong.

Ambiguous endings are necessarily bad, it's just that it's often used as a crutch to avoid wrapping up elements that should have been wrapped up

Having Virgil as a character doesn't make Dante's Inferno a fanfic. Virgil was a REAL LIFE poet, but Dante's Inferno just has him as a guide.

Now Virgil's poem, the Aeneid, now that IS a literal fanfiction. It's about Aeneas after Troy gets wrecked.

But somehow I don't think your Kingdom Hearts x Steven Universe crossover fic is gonna be at the same level of the Greeks

You're using the wordplay of "takes you out of the story" to justify two completely different effects, just because they can be described with the same wording.

When John was "taken out of the story", the story continued and he was very much a part of it. When the four kids were "taken out of the story", the story continued and they were still part of it. So why, when English was "taken out of the story", does the story need to end immediately?

I'm not saying the theory is WRONG. But it's not intuitive and it certainly isn't unambiguously true.

Yeah and most importantly it makes a fucking shitty ending that doesn't actually resolve anything.

Who fucking cares how LE is "defeated", nobody except WV and maybe MAYBE Dave had satisfying character development.
>>
>>81858652
because the story of Homestuck ends when the defeat of the villain ends the loop

>kids enter their universe
>later sacrifice themselves so that LE can be born
>sacrifice is used to beat him millennia later

all that needs to be tied up is the fate of the kids after the juju is used on English
>>
>>81858659
It's not even that, fifteen seconds if animation of the kids squaring off against le would have made the whole thing better. But also yes people did indeed like the video game animations and more of them would be good
>>
>>81858603
>Anyone can fill in the blanks.
No, they can't. Because no one is quite sure how the juju actually WORKS. All of the proposed mechanisms are fan interpretation, and the way the juju worked on John, giving him retcon powers, seems different from the way it worked on English.

Without knowing the true workings of the juju, nobody can be certain of the ultimate fate of the kids or English, or what it means to be trapped inside of it.

>VRISKA: And if that's the case, then... I guess the weapon just releases them so they can finish the jo8?
>VRISKA: Guess we'll find out!
>VRISKA: Should 8e exciting.
And then we never got to see what it actually did, and it was not exciting.

Vriska doesn't know. Her interpretation raises more questions than answers. If the kids truly emerged from the juju, then how did they defeat the unkillable demon? How can we be sure that he was actually defeated?

The tone of Vriska's explanation, as well as the animation itself, suggests a different outcome... that English was actually drawn into the juju and became trapped there with the kids.

But who fucking knows, right? It could totally go either way.

If I edited an abridged homestuck (not a rewrite, just a resequence) would it be worth it?

I'd cut out a lot of troll shit, the majority of the early act 6 intermissions, all of the retcon timeline leading up with aranea, but still leave it so it ends the same?

You'd have to move things around for meenah etc., but I think it could be done.

I assumed he was trapped in the same kind of causality loop as the kids. The story required a villain, and like Jack he was happy to step into the role if only to get away from all the aggravation in his life but he never really had any other option. His defeat and realisation that he was defeated, essentially, by cut-scene power to be a stepping stone for someone else could have even pushed him to the kids' side or at least break the game so utterly that the cycle could be broken completely.

Then again, I also found Caliope incredibly irritating and, worse, boring. Making them the villain was clearly wishful thinking on my part

>>
Everything weird with LE/Caliborn is because Hussie is a weirdo who flagrantly insists on only characterizing his antagonists through similar proxies. Jack Noir had Spades Slick in the Intermission, the Condesce had Meenah, and LE had his younger self, and, to a much lesser extent, the other beings who turned out to be part of his aggregate soul.LE never had any actual character, just like how the Condesce only had a few lines as a hollow echo of Meenah and Jack barely got to interact with anyone once he was turned into a dog god.

>>
>>81859012
Well it would be nice if we were actually told that that happened and weren't left to wonder. That's what ambiguity is. Dave killing English is contrary to the discussions at the end of Act 6. By all indications, the story was telling us that killing Union Jack would fulfill the prophecy. If it doesn't, then that's a red herring, and when there's a red herring that isn't revealed to be a red herring, that's ambiguity.

JESUS christ there is barely one narrative event in this comic that is acceptable for any reason other than that the whole thing is a joke. a 'pure story cut' would be godawful.

you cant extract a good narrative from homestuck without leaving the jokes in, it only ever worked to the extent that it does because you can never tell whether its serious or not
>>
>>81859036
>It's kind of a weird situation where Caliborn's journey to becoming LE is very good

i really agree, in fact it was the only thing that kept me interested in the comic for a time. the sad thing is, you NEED the rest of the comic for it to work. the whole cherub reveal was honestly incredible, and so well done too; the way people hinted that Calliope's horns might have been fake, the sequence of her taking off the gloves, goddamn.

but again, it could not have worked if we didn't see lord english beforehand. so yeah, no idea how caliborn could have functioned any other way, but the end result was lackluster.

it really was 'journey, not destination' in this case. fuck you andrew.
>>
>>81859319
yes give me a hard one right away will you

You wake up in some stupid desert. It's hardly waking up, now that you think of it. You never fell asleep. No, you were decapitated. All this work to track down Lord English only to get your head chopped off by a kid in pajamas. Diamonds Droog would never let you hear the end of it.

And just when you thought you were alone with your dead thoughts for a while, Die makes his usual entrance. The vaguely nonplussed, completely dead kind. He asks what are you doing here. You tell him being dead, what do you think idiot. Okay, he says. Don't swear at me, he says. He'll put the pin in, he says.

You give him a good smacking over. Being dead doesn't mean being invincible, unluckily for him. He'll really pt the pin in, he says. He's already got the juju. You say go on then, what are you waiting for. He puts the spades pin into the juju.

You were already dead.

GREEN TORSOS DOUBLE KILLED: 1/15
>>
>>81859393
Rose indeed had an arc, but it wasn't really explored after Cascade.
The retcon wasn't kind to her. Instead of solving her drinking problem, it just magically went away. Then the whole Jasprose thing happened, and that ended with her throwing a fit. There was no real arc to be found, nothing really resolved

That, and she never played the rain. I thought that was a big part of her arc? What with how reckless she became in act 5 and trying to break the game, while in reality making matters worse. Playing the rain and solving her planet's quest like she was supposed to would have completed her arc perfectly.

That rule was always stupid and limiting. A ham-fisted insistence that adults have to be like they are in Peanuts in a ~Coming of Age~ story. Well, newsflash, Fauntleroy; coming of age means you grow and have closure, which almost none of your characters actually did.

Remember how cool it was when he broke that rule for DD? Why did he just completely ditch DD and CD/DROLLGORG? Why did he kill off AR and refuse to have anything to do with him 4 years ago? Why did he think having a final villain who is introduced speaking go completely mute with no explanation afterwards would be a worthwhile decision?

When did you first fall out of Homestuck, and how did it happen for you?

It was the summer of 2013 for me. Or whenever that huge hiatus was that had Caliborn laughing at the end, doing that one shitty pose Hussie's self-insert did. Whatever. I was still HUGELY into Homestuck then, like the comic still had it's magic for me and I was dying for me. But there wasn't going to be much for a while, so I got into other things. OFF sounded interesting... And getting into it made me realize how much I missed video games. So, I started getting into that again, and gradually just lost all interest in Homestuck.
