That's actually a decent comparison.
GF kept on presenting this cipher solving, cryptid motif then ended the finale with a giant robot fight and all of the symbols just "coming together cause".
An illusion of complexity and intricacy that ended up falling completely flat - due to time restraints or bad writing, whatever. Still a good, solid show.
Homestuck is an example of that taken to the extreme, to the point that it's disgusting.
