Characters are meh, personalities are forgettable at best. Animation and syncing their dialogue was terrible in the first 1-2 seasons, they've improved on this though in the 3rd season.
Music, weapons, and the fight scenes are all decent enough to keep me watching though.

I watch it because I think it is shit in an amusing way.
By watching all three seasons I have admittedly wasted far more time on it than I should have. But I know when season 4 comes around I will watch it, and I will laugh at it.
I was really happy when a bunch of the characters died in the last season, I hate all of them.

The action scenes are pretty solid.
Everything else is mostly shitty, but fun to laugh at.
Basically it has highs and lows but they're both entertaining for completely different reasons.
It's the best piece of action/martial arts cinema in production today. It has a nigh-exclusively female cast, never sexualises them, and then targets a general audience like that was the most natural thing in the entertainment industry. It takes pride in developing the relationships between its characters, it's bursting with origunal ideas, and the entire thing is made by a small independent team AND THEIR SECRETARY. Ans to top it all off, it never comes off as amateurish, it never feels like it's sufferring from any sort of inferiority complex, never once acts like it isn't perfectly content with itself and in fact challenges the entire rest of entertainment media to get on its level.
RWBY is seriously one of the greatest things ever made.

It was a lot of fun just talking shit about it with /co/. Felt sort of like a Mystery Science Theater kind of thing, like when you watch a shitty movie with friends in real life and just insult it the whole way through.
I think things mostly changed due to an influx of new users who liked the show legitimately, I can't imagine many people from the early threads still going to them for anything other than the occasional fap at fanart. A weird thing I've noticed with generals is that they tend to attract a lot of people form other sites, not just /co/. I think a bunch of teenage anime-club faggots just saw the threads as a place to talk about RWBY and basically took over.

Rwby is not that popular
The fights and weapons and fantasy elements are cliche, but still cool. The music is cheesy and over the top, but catchy and memorable. The characters are barely more than their archetypes, but they're still likable enough you want to see how they develop.
It's lots of flash with little substance, but I still like it. What I like most about it though is that it has potential. It's an okay show now, but it has lots of room to become an amazing show.

Terrible writing, the show is just made for OTP tumblr fags. Shitty animation, havent seen a single minute of RWBY that didnt have a mistake or just look awful. The fight scenes are pretty neat, but I'm more fascinated on how the show gets financed.
But the animation's not the best, but I shouldn't expect high quality (can they afford to outsource the animation to a foreign studio?) from a small indie studio like themselves. Writing wise is horribly cliche, and the music is awful. But I feel like they should get points for attempting a project like this.

Honest answer? It doesn't take itself too seriously, it reminds me of a lot of whimsical light-hearted anime that I liked as a kid, the fights are amazing, I think the character designs are unique, the music is cheesy but surprisingly good, it has a welcoming nice fandom, I like RoosterTeeth stuff, and I have fallen for pic related. That is all.

IMO you're best stopping at 5. 6-8 are alright but they're devalued heavily by the fact they aren't the "finale" arc of the show and kinda suck worse with each passing season with character development getting retconned or shit being ignored.
Everything past 8 is fucking abysmal. Burnie and Miles really shit the bed and I have no idea how they managed to ruin such a good formula.
