ITT: Mean-spirited shows
Why did the term "mean-spirited" become such a bogeyman? It's a legitimate criticism depending on your tastes. If you watch a show because you like the characters, you aren't going to like it when the show constantly shits all over them. There is humor in that - seeing somebody fail or get beat up - but it's not a type of humor that applies to everyone.

I always take it to mean none of the characters are likable. They just exist to be assholes, which is supposed to be funny. Which contrasts with shows about assholes who have other qualities that can make them relatable or likable. Though this is obviously highly subjective.

Same as "comfy" - it's just as a thought-terminating cliché that explains nothing and in fact polarizes discussions.
Plus, comfy and non-meanspirited stories are what's in nowadays. And 4chan being the hive of contrarian autists they are, make a shitstorm out of that.

I like it, but it's definitely "mean-spirited." The Titans are always making fun of each other. They find a reason to complain about pretty much everything else. And there are lots of jokes made at the expense of the original cartoon's fanbase.
