I doubt any form of X-Men / MCU crossover is going to happen but if it did I imagine it would involve Fox rebooting the X-Men.
Hugh Jackman was the main draw and he's almost 50 and looking to get out now. By the time 2020 rolls around the McAvoy / Fassbender versions of Prof X and Magneto will be close to a decade old. They have a hot new thing with Deadpool but he's not as tied to the existing continuity so there isn't as much to worry about (fuck they could even use a crossover as joke material for future Deadpool films). They're probably already looking at a way to reboot things and doing a "Mutants in the MCU" version would be huge and they know it. If they could work out a good deal with Disney it would easily be the best choice for them going forward. Plus there's already precedent with Sony and Spider-Man so it's not completely crazy.

It was more than that really. It was an attempt to revitalize the FF, Cap, Iron Man, and Thor because no one cared about them at the time.
The most popular characters in the 90s were The X-Men, Spidey, and Punisher. A bit later Hulk managed to climb back to the top too. His characters were also in both universes due to his general popularity. Ghost Rider was a big seller too.
Marvel hoped giving the Avengers and FF to the Image guys would boost interest, it didn't, Marvel wanted to keep it going despite so long as Jim Lee actually worked on and stuck with a book and Lee declined to do so.
