So if Ozymandias tried killing Dr. Manhattan with the machine that gave him his powers, why didn't he just use the machine on himself and become unbeatable?
>>
he wasn't a watchmaker
>>
>>81645456
That would be like Wally west replicating the lightning strike in the hopes it'd give him Barry Allens powers instead of just killing him.
>>
>>81645456
Because there was no guarantee that the same thing would happen to him and the machine wouldn't just horribly kill him. Dr. Manhattan, like most superheroes, was a freak accident that can't be replicated.
>>
>>81645456

One in a billion chance things turned out as they did for Manhattan. The russians killed dozens of people trying to do the same thing, never worked.
>>
He knew the circumstances he got his powers under could not be replicated.
>>
Ozymandias may not have wanted to risk it

or

Dr. Osterman used to assemble clocks as a child, genius scientist knew how to reassemble himself in the right order.

This is the guy who was so fully of himself that he successfully learned how to catch a bullet.
>>
Osterman became Manhattan because he was destined to in a sense time in watchmen isnt a river but more like a set of pictures immutable
>>
>>81645736
>he successfully learned how to catch a bullet
Even he was surprised that worked
>>
>>81645456
>>81645501
>>81645536
>>81645540

The comic showed that it worked because he had fundamental understanding of what was happening to him in the first place, being a scientists and the patience to put himself back together, watchmaker raising.

It was his character that made him the way he was and I really like that.
>>
>>81645783
Yeah, but there's no way he didn't practice that, taking the risk that he could pull it off. Just saying that the guy fancied himself the smartest man on the planet, and was obviously willing to take the risks. Risk-aversion isn't a trait I'd use to describe Veidt.
>>
>>81645736
Yes, but that's an entirely different level of risk. There are ways he could practice catching a bullet, and if something went wrong it would be entirely possible to survive being shot as long as the bullet wasn't aimed at a vital part of the body. With the energy accelerator thing, if something goes wrong you're instantly dead. Veidt is willing to risk things but he's still smart.
>>
>>81645803
but Ozy's the smartest man in the world, isn't he? he should have a fundamental understanding to.
>>
>>81646703
If he was really the smartest man in the world he wouldn't have named himself Ozymandias

Ohhhh, I just got why it was called Watchmen.
>>
Why didn't Ozy just learn how to make a watch, and then use the machine on himself?
>>
>>81645933
yeah but Veidt could practice catching bullets to decrease risk when he tries to catch a bullet in a life or death situation. But there is no way he could practice doing the procedure that created Manhattan without considerable loss of life, ie guinea pigs.
>>
>>81645502
Doesn't Barry try to regain his powers with a lightning in Flashpoint?

Why didn't Bubastis just reassemble herself and fight Jon for Veidt?
>>
>>81647420
yes and the first time it set him on fucking fire
it was my favorite part of the film
he tried again the next night because hes a madman

of course he had thomas' help

>>81647437
shit made me sad, bubs was a cool critter but i guess Veidt can make another right?
>>
>>81647615
>i guess Veidt can make another right?

Doubt it, I'm pretty sure she was created as a test for the giant octopus by those scientists he blew up on the boat
>>
>>81645456
good science is running the same scenario over and over again to verify you get consistent results

no way of knowing if what happened to the watch maker would happen again or if it was just a fluke
>>
>>81647552
I always wondered if Veidt miscalculated horribly and unleashed an all powerful creature upon the universe somewhere down the line
>>
>>81647760
>and unleashed an all powerful creature upon the universe somewhere down the line
Well, yes.
In the comics, he did.
>>
>>81647308
He had those guys he killed by locking them out in the snow, he could have used them to test it.
>>
>>81647666
nice 666
im convinced
>>
>>81647998
killing by locking someone out is much easier than killing by subjecting someone to experimentation
>>
>>81645502
I always wanted an AU where this happens, and it seems to work but Wally gets Quicksilver's version of superspeed. That is, everything is in slow motion compared to him. It gets worse until he can't stand it anymore, blames Barry, and becomes RF/Zoom.
>>
>>81647797
nah that one he took into account while scheming plots
>>
>>81645803
>>81646861

Yea I tend to think that if anyone else on the planet could have rebuilt themself from particles it would have been him.
>>
>>81645540
I wonder how many people were accelerated into higher beings but never had the knowhow to make a physical body or cared to try it and just continued to exist on some other plane of existence.
>>
Moore has shitty writing and basically tried to excuse it as "since Jon was a watchmaker he knew how to put his body back together".

No one's said it so I will. Isn't that exactly what Wally did? Maybe you know that but it doesn't look like the people replying to you do.

>>
>>81646861
Smartest, but is he disciplines, methodical?

Surely but the idea of the scientist having a damn near amazing absolute understanding of human anatomy and the physics and understanding the laws applied to atoms and what does what and in what order is a parallel to how you can only take a watch apart and put it back together if you go step by step in the correct order.
>>
>>81653739
1) its meant to be reminiscent of a golden age or silver age superhero origin story you retard

2) thats why john thinks he was able to do it, it's not necessarily true

3) the exact circumstances probably aren't widely known. his powers are kind of time linked, perhaps the fact that he held the watch is what made the difference
>>
I've never read any dc or marvel comics can you guys recommend me some that go beyond the capeshit like watchmen?
>>
>>81659085
>perhaps the fact that he held the watch is what made the difference
Behold, I have captured the power of time from within a watch. I am now become the WatchMen.
>>
>>81659547

The Watchmen is capeshit.
>>
>>81659547
as in cape comics that go beyond the capeshit?

miracleman, x-men legacy (simon spurrier), zenith, all-star superman
>>
>>81659547

we kid a lot but Moore's big works like V for Vendetta and Watchmen are seriously masterful, the guy operates on another level

>tfw you will never be a great writer

Moore didn't even like capes, finally got convinced to write the killing joke, he didn't like it and regretted turning it in, it's one of the most important and unforgettable comics in history with incredible depth and style

and it's far from his best work

how do you become like that, do I have to just become a freak weirdo to even try?

Originally, yeah, which is his point.

Born to Run retconned it into a more sensible thing. And then the New 52 turned him into a heaping pile of shit so it doesn't even matter.
>>
>>81646703
Yes smartest man, not the most intelligent. He can plan things and run a business but that doesn't mean he knows shit about quantum physics.
>>
>>81645456

Because Jon figured out how to reconstruct himself. Ozy wasn't going to risk not being able to do that. Jon already had a scientific mind so it's possible for other scientists to do what he did maybe but because Jon can also put things together like watches it's not guaranteed other scientists can either.
>>
>>81646861
>not getting the joke
Look upon my murder of innocents, fellow heroes, and despair, because this saved the world. Our other efforts were for naught.

His name is essentially a clue as to how the story end.
