I feel on some level shipping "culture" has ruined the way a lot of people look at relationships in media.
Don't get me wrong there have always been shippers and there will always be shit from casual 'wouldn't it be neet if they fucked" to insane crack pairings.
But more so than ever I feel like characters very rarely are allowed a sense of comradery anyone. Males and females instantly have to lust for each other in some way no matter how platonic their interactions are and even two men or women get shipped to hell and back just because they're friends.
Which, again, this has been going on way before the internet but now we're at a point where even kids cartoons are basically getting by on having really stupid and pointless relationship episodes again
and again.
But back to those two shows I guess.
I really don't think either Regular Show or Adventure Time would have evolved the way they did if the creators and/or the fans didn't have such a vocal interest in having X and Y characters fuck and want to fuck in general.
What's the end result? People legitimately being creeped out by how pathetic Mordecai and Finn are. It's not just "oh the boy character wants to pretty girl at school but he just can't win her heart" it's a more adult sort of "boy that cartoon bird really wants to FUCK THE SHIT OUT OF that other cartoon bird" or "boy the human child really wants to GET HIS DICK WET".
Finn was a legitimately creepy weird little teenage horndog who, had AT always been aimed at an older audience, would have been the sad 20 something arthouse kid who lost his pixie cut dreamgirl so he went around banging whoever would give him the slightest bit of contact while crying in the sheets as he climaxes.
These shows have reached this point where they're trying to grow up and have real relationships instead of "boy Suzy Sunshine is someone who I'd like to take to the dance" but the end result is just weird and shouldn't exist.
