Doug TenNapel is a religious nut, true, but is he a bad creator?
>>
Probably. His webcomic sucked total ass, which makes me think the things he did that were good were due to the influence of people working with him and not his own talent.
>>
>>81623548
Never played Earthworm Jim or The Neverhood so i wouldn't know. Neverhood seems nice

I like his stuff for the most part, yeah. Ratfist was kinda ehh, but that Nnewts one was pretty cool.

I've got both of the Sketchbook Archives he released, which are pretty cool.

Beans beans, the musical fruit...
>>
Earthworm Jim is my childhood.

So no.
>>
skullmonkeys had an AMAZING soundtrack and it's still in regular circulation when I'm listening to music on shuffle

but how is the creator a religious nut? are you shitposting or is he like a genuine wacko? explain
>>
Sockbaby is great.
>>
Only when it affects his work.

>but how is the creator a religious nut? are you shitposting or is he like a genuine wacko? explain

I don't know if he takes it further than this, but he definitely is a creationist. It got to the point that he made a caricature of a biology professor who taught evolution by natural selection instead of popular mythology. That caricature became Professor-Monkey-For-A-Head in Earthworm Jim.
>>
I would be lying if i said i knew more of his works outside the neverhood and earthworm jim, which i loved.
I know he did this comic called iron west that looks somewhat interesting but i've been unable to find it.
What DOES bother me is that most of his designs looks samey, almost all characters he does have the same body build as earthworm jim, saying that i would assume that he could be more mediocre than we think.
>>
>>81624574

Source? Where's the pre-Earthworm Jim stuff that shows this?
>>
>>81624881
Apparently, it's on Doug's blog (and I fucked up, it was actually his high-school science teachers, not a college professor). My Google-fu is failing me right now, so I'm still looking for said blog at the moment.
>>
>>81624118

>how is the creator a religious nut?

He's just a run-of-the-mill conservative Christian who isn't ashamed of his faith. Has said some nice things about the intelligent design movement but there's no evidence he's a 'creationist'.

He subscribes to the Biblical notion of marriage so Internet liberals hate him. S'about it. His religious leanings don't flow that much into his work, you'll never see him make a chick tract or anything.

If you're interested in his comics then go read Creature Tech, it's good.
>>
>>81624994

I just went through his whole blog all the way back to 2008 and I haven't seen shit, sir.
>>

>skullmonkeys had an AMAZING soundtrack and it's still in regular circulation when I'm listening to music on shuffle

That was Terry S Taylor (who was a former frontman of Daniel Amos, a Christian New Wave Band)
>>
>>81625185
Do you have a link? My Google-fu continues to fail me, and all I've got on the origin of Professor-Monkey-For-A-Head thus far are uncited secondary sources (e.g. a TV Tropes character page, a reddit comments section, etc.).
>>
>>81625411
https://tennapel.wordpress.com/

Here's the only blog he's got. Goes all the way back to 2008. Still posts on it every month or so.
>>
>>81623548
I remember he popped into /v/ before that newer game came out, seemed like a nice enough guy. Apparently the guy who did most of the concept art was strapped for cash and sold his notebook full of stuff for a small amount of money, which is why you can find individual pages for sale online at jacked up prices.
>>
>>81625438
Ah! Thank you! And thanks to that, I've now got the original source, in the comments section of this page:

https://tennapel.wordpress.com/2011/02/09/four-comments-written-in-30-minutes/

JonnyMatic Says:
>Doug, I’m not sure if you are reading any of my posts but if you are, I was wondering if Professor Monkey for a Head was in any way a reference to any of your college or high school evolutionist professors?

TenNapel Says:
>M for a head was most of them. My high school biology teacher was pretty awesome, though.
>>
>>81623548
He's a decent writer and. Great artist.
Earthboy Jacobus was pretty cool

I still enjoy some of his work even though I'm a degenerate homo heathen.

People who can't separate a creator's views are drags.

I can understand when their political views seep into their work and you don't want to hear their proselytizing but when the series doesn't hint at the creator's views, who gives a flying shit?

I just avoid anything by Doug that might include overt Christfaggotry and enjoy what he puts out otherwise.

My faggot enclave and I consider watching Sockbaby "a must."
>>
>>81624833
Iron West is pretty good. A better Scifi Western than most
>>
>>81625566

M'kay? So how do you derive 'I am a creationist who created a character to caricature atheist evolutionists' from 'This character is based on some teachers I've had, including my high school biology teacher who was pretty awesome'?

>religious nut
Anon, pic related is a "religious nut." This is a person who wants to murder people for being gay, murder people for looking at women, murder people for drawing his god, and generally murdering people because his religion tells him to.

Doug Tennapel is not a religious nut. He's said on one or two occasions that he believes marriage should be between a man and a woman. He's not tossing gay men off of roofs to appease his sky god.

Pick your battles, bro.
>>
>>81625000
>His religious leanings don't flow that much into his work
>Creature Tech

The whole 'athiest scientist suddenly becomes religious' conclusion really didn't make sense. Felt forced.
>>
>>81625821

I disagree. In a setting like Creature Tech it seems like it'd be kinda hard to be an atheist.

It'd be like being a natural materialist in Hellboy.
>>
>>81625689
Because the science teachers in question were specifically said to have taught evolution, not creationism. Remember that he was born in the late '60s, before the teaching of evolution in science classrooms was as controversial as it is today. The widespread outrage over not teaching religion in a science class didn't really hit full steam until mass communication allowed the Religious Right to more effectively coordinate their efforts, so teaching evolution was more widespread and less complained about then, even if conservative Christian families in the South disagreed. Also, I don't recall ever claiming that any of the teachers were atheists, just that they wouldn't teach religion in science classes.
>>
I'm gay and a filthy socialist. Like his work. I think the closest he's gone to doing Strawman stuff is Ratfist, but even then that's mostly just a fun comic whose villains are carciatures of liberals.

Neverhood is a work of art, Skullmonkeys less so, Catscratch is my childhood but I have a feeling rewatching it would be painful, I wanna read the graphic novel it was based on. Never played any EWG stuff.

Creature Tech is the one by Doug everyone loves but I didn't care for - not just for that reason but because the pacing was weird in general.

>>
>>81625847
I meant more that it didn't make sense for the character, the way it was presented. A story about a big conversion like that needs to show you the character's journey from one extreme to the other, working through the internal conflicts and revelations involved. Instead it just felt like he tagged the conversion on at the end.
>>
>>81625848
>Because the science teachers in question were specifically said to have taught evolution, not creationism.

Yeah? But where does it say Doug is a creationist or that evolution and religious leanings aren't compatible concepts?

>Christian families in the South

Doug is from California.

>just that they wouldn't teach religion in science classes.

When did he say they didn't? I know no one claimed the teachers were atheists. That's the point. You're talking a question asked by an anonymous person with a simple answer and reading into it like you're looking for the goddamn antidote.

Someone asked if Monkey-for-a-Head was based on his science teachers. Tennapel said yes. That's the end of the conversation. This is a fucking reach based on a LOT of conjecture.

Maximum fedora reached
>>
>>81626084
I never said they shouldn't. Just that Professor Monkey-For-A-Head was a caricature of science teachers he disagreed with, and that based on the "popular mythology" line, I disagree with his views on the subject. I never once said that he and others like him shouldn't be able to make satire.

Gear is absolutely nothing like Catscratch but it's good. Separate the two in your mind and you'll have a good time.

I enjoyed Gear, Catscratch, The Neverhood, and Earthworm Jim.

Also kinda weird that he's the new head of veggietales along side Mike Nelson
>>
>>81625742
>He's said on one or two occasions that he believes marriage should be between a man and a woman.

And people like him will vote for politicians who are anti-LGBT and will put their beliefs into law. Just look at North Carolina and Mississippi, they're full of people who have similar ideas.

Yes to this entirely. Ratfist was a pile of garbage that started out great but immediately nosedived on page 51.

Coincidentally, he took most of the webcomic down and the preview for the print version stops at page 50. Weird.

shit man, I did this too with an French Teacher, and that was the 10th grade.
>>81625000
he sound's like a cool dude. The fact he went from something like Earth Worm Jim, to Veggie tales will always surprise me.
>>
>>81631120
man what is it with Doug and crowns
>>
>>81625000
Didn't he make a comparison of gay marriage to a man taking a dump in a woman's restroom? He apparently also wrote pretty misogynistic and homophobic things for a site.

Though those things go pretty back, he might've learned to take it down a notch. Anyway, he's a somewhat imaginative fellow, but I would not splurge much money on his stuff.
>>
>>81632851
If he's been on the internet this long, he's either learned to hide his power level, has actually toned himself down from the exposure, or will suddenly explode into a bloody rainbow of diatribes and lunacy and long rant posts. But I don't think that last one will happen.

Him being a religious nut is total bullshit /co/ meme, similar to the meme of Butch Hartman being a born again christfreak who hates gays. He's simply proud of being a Christian and freakishly tall.

>>81623548
Armikrog looks like an unfinished kickstarter flop, but Ghostopolis was cool.
>>
>>81633253
>Armikrog looks like
It plays like one too. It's ridiculously unpolished (it doesn't even have a custom mouse cursor, that's unacceptable for an adventure game), it's ugly and uninspired (I hate how every room is a simple cardboard box coated in clay instead of a unique and stand out piece of architecture like in the neverhood), there's a tiny handful of puzzles and half of them are re-used to pad space out even more (the baby puzzle in particular has the exact same solution all three times). It's just a poor showing all around.
>>
>>81623847
I never played The Neverhood but the cutscenes from Skullmonkies and Boombots were top tier stuff. Skullmonkies was even a little fun even though BoomBots sucked.
>>
>>81633253
>Him being a religious nut is total bullshit /co/ meme

I was aware of this before 4chan existed. Though I'm not sure where I first heard it.

I've met him, too. He seemed like an alright guy, I suppose.

>>81625231
>That was Terry S Taylor

Neverhood had one of the best soundtracks to anything.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSGk1bQ9rcU

I remember they did a sort-of proto-kickstarter to gauge interest in a re-release of the OST because the original was going for $100-150 on eBay. I still have pic related in a box somewhere.
>>
>>81634523
The Neverhood is Doug's absolute best work, game or comic or otherwise. If you liked the cutscenes from skullmonkey but not so much the gameplay then Neverhood's right up your alley, since there's a hell of a lot more cutscenes and world building and adventure game puzzle solving and less farting around with mediocre platforming.
