Zootopia is a masterpiece, I have every faith in Disney animators and producers to deliver and admittedly they got better at it.
Granted, this I don't think it is likely they will top emotional impact and depth of the first part, but they might as well explore other avenue of emotional engagement as it were.
Notwithstanding the above, I'll just be glad to see more Zootopia.

That is by far the most overrated animated film of all time, and in no way deserves the praise people give it. That it is at a 99% and higher than films like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke is absolutely disgusting.

Yeah I'll agree with this, it wasn't the flowers as much as the really convenient way she found out about them being the cause. They just happen to have a conversation where they just happen to come up. Ok then.
>Nick was too quick to fully opening up about his deepest problems and it made the relationship feel underdeveloped. I've just never been a fan of scenes where characters seem to be completely aware of what their subconscious drives are.
I may have agreed on my first viewing but I've seen the film twice now and feel that she did save him and he obviously is very against other people being treated like he was. I don't think it was too quick at all, it seemed very relevant to their current situation so he confided in her, she'd proved to him that she was different so he decided to take a chance and open up to her, he was also quick to move away from the topic.
>I've just never been a fan of scenes where characters seem to be completely aware of what their subconscious drives are.
I actually really liked this, lot's of people know exactly why they do the things they do even if they don't necessarily think they are doing the right things in their lives. Nick knows that he could be more but feels the situation is too helpless to even bother trying.

Executive meddling also, if I'm not mistaken, is really hurting Pixar too (if Brave and Good Dinosaur are any indication). Sometimes it works, but too much of it can neuter your final product to the point where it just feels so watered down.

Also let's not forget Disney has made some pretty dark stuff in the past (*cough*Lion King*cough*) and sure there's always some executive imput but it just seems like as long as Disney will have a monopoly on the film industry the least they could do is try to take some risks so their films don't all come across as the same.

In Zootopia's case it really was the right idea, I think. Besides, it wasn't purely exec meddling, it came about after audience tests, which revealed that audiences were reacting in a completely different way than they wanted, so something clearly wasn't working. The question is why didn't they test their concept to an audience earlier.

>>81587091
Yeah they always seem to do overhauls at the last minute, and that really hampers the projects.
Zootopia just got lucky that Byron and Rich both are so talented that they were able to circumvent that and still produce a coherent, strong script that included a lot of plot-points yet did not seem overtly rushed.
In that case I give more credit to the directors than the executives.

I mean, fine I guess that would be strange for a Disney film (and like I said before -- I'm absolutely fine with how Zootopia came out -- I'm just not entirely on board with the principal it sets, along with the cases of Frozen, Bolt, etc) but it could still work.
Not every animated film needs to be a comedy, just like not every superhero film does. Just because BvS turned out to be shit doesn't mean DC should suddenly start going for the 'le quippy' tone of Marvel films.
There will be a company that will finally take these risks, and imho it will either be Laika (like an anon said) or DreamWorks (if Katzenberg is fired and replaced with someone who pushes for more HTTYD-like films).

I'll never say I don't find the original premise fascinating, because I do and I would still watch a movie about it in a heartbeat, but there are very obvious issues with tone especially considering it was a Disney movie. From what we've seen it would've been more soul-crushing than Lilo & Stitch, very possibly without an emotional payoff of equal proportions and that honestly just doesn't sound like a Disney movie to me. Plus it doesn't help that HTTYD2 under-performed while shit like Home did better than expected. Now they seem scared to take risks and are focusing on kiddie bullshit.
It sucks because they have so much potential and talent there, and I'm sick of everyone sucking Pixar/Disney's dick. I want them to succeed, but they need to get some new CEO's first.

>Darkness without substance
Nobody said there can't be dark films, but there has some sort of reason or meaning behind it. Judy and Nick would basically be casted out of conventional society, hunted and the ultimate message would be 'society is broken, you can't fix it no matter what. Fuck you'.
That's not only a message Disney would avoid, but it drown everything it represents.
I agree, there needs to variety. I would kill for genuine animated horror or historical drama. But there are ways to it correctly and incorrectly
So since they use the language, what does religion look like in Zootopia? Animal spirits? Monotheism? Ganesh jokes?

There is no way the reference to this meme was not intentional.
I can see Byron doing this on purpose 100%.

>more soul crushing than Lilo and Stitch
You know what's funny is Lasseter apparently did not like Lilo and Stitch either... and then he reportedly had Chris Sanders fired from American Dog because it was 'too quirky' or something.

this came from the drawthread.

Anklet walkie-talkie is sheer brilliance here. This is the sort of stuff I'd expect them to put in the movie.
>>81587515
I'm not saying I disliked it, I'm just saying that it was pretty fucking depressing for like 80% of the movie--but the suffering is worth is because the payoff is proportional. I don't feel that the payoff of 1.0 would have been proportional to the sheer suffering contained within and that's just not really a Disney film.

No I see what you're saying, but I'm wondering why Lasseter did not like it. Was it because it was so dark? If so, it seems strange considering he was the head of Pixar -- the masters of emotional manipulation.

>The flowers were contrived as fuck
The "convenient reveal" about the night howlers was convenient, but not as coincidental as you might think. It looks like Judy had been working on the farm for a few weeks, so there was plenty of time for the subject to come up.
Also, remember it was Gideon who unknowingly had the missing piece of the puzzle, and you have to figure that the Hopps had been avoiding him ever since Judy was a little bunny. It wasn't until Stu overcame his own bigotry that Gideon could make amends and (accidentally) help Judy solve the crime.
>I've just never been a fan of scenes where characters seem to be completely aware of what their subconscious drives are.
Nick's had a lot of time to mull over why the world seems stacked against him. He's the type who would understand his own motives.
Also, the biggest plot point in the entire movie was that Judy WASN'T aware of her subconscious drives. She was completely blind to her own bigotry against predators until Nick called her out on it

>I need a Judy to help give my life purpose
haha, you're wrong.
Nick had ambition since his early days and was eager to change as soon as someone believed in him, becoming jaded out of necessity. Judy was merely a catalyst which brought what was already in him all this time.
>Consider the following
Would you be able to stand up to Bogo when he was yelling at Judy to release the badge or quiver in fear like a beta if you were in Nick's shoes?
If you're a pathetic slob, no amount of Judies will help you.
