Will we ever get more western animation geared towards older audiences? Something outside the comedy genre too.

Dead Space Downfall, or Aftermath? Downfall still an enjoyable gory animated movie. But stay away from Aftermath (that ugly early 90s like CG).
Dante's Inferno is a bit much better. There are various animation styles throughout the chapters. Like that The Dark Knight animation movie in 2008.

I fucking loved Spawn, I couldn't get over how awesome it was to be watching an adult hand-drawn series.It's actually the first cape cartoon I've seen so now I'm afraid I'll be let down if I ever get around to watching other shows
And OP, you should check out European animation. They frequently make movies geared for adults, and they still make them in glorious 2D.
