Fun Fact: Dumb and Dumber was made by hannah barbera around the same time as the What a cartoon show (Craig McCracken is the show's character designer while guys like David Feiss and Rob Renzetti were storyboard artists, though I think this was a script driven show)

I doubt that kids would've known (or at least cared) about Gilligan's Island, and I'd imagine the whole "Cartoons are only for kids" stigma would have been much stronger back then than it is now, basically eliminating the original show's audience.

I'm pretty sure Gilligan's Island got plenty of reruns, and it's a simple concept that kids can get & enjoy. I'd imagine the reruns probably got good ratings as family entertainment in the '80s, so a gimmicky reboot was an easy choice.
