They're telling their own story inspired by the series. From what I understand everything up until Tommy joining the Rangers is mostly the same, except they also have a pocket dimension where they train.

It's a modern update to the TV series. They didn't bother retelling the origin story or anything, just dove in right after Tommy joined. No telling how much it might diverge from the show.
