I have a girl coming over this weekend to watch cartoons. I think a movie would be a good idea but I am not sure which. She likes shows like Adventure Time and Steven Universe so I am trying to find a fun animated film but all I can think to watch are Heavy Metal and Redline, but I don't think the former really fits.

Thoughts?

Hmm...

Off the top of my head,
Wizards
Cats Don't Dance
The Iron Giant (this, especially)

Secret of Nimh is a pretty gnarly imaginative and beautiful animated film.

But if you are in for more mature fare and far more psychadelic and unusual fare...someone else mentioned Wizards. I would also recommend that. Ralph bakshi's coolest flick in my opinion.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ptj7VoaWOs
Take note....it is very VERY 70s.
>>
>>81494343
I've seen the first and last. Never seen cats don't dance so I'll check out the trailer.

Iron Giant is definitely going on the list.
>>
>>81494436
Trippy is good.

Secret of Nimh is one of my favourites. Loved the book. Anyone else read it?
>>
Coffee Samurai
>>
>>81494122
Iron Giant is a good one if you want snuggles.

Dead Leaves, though an anime movie, is just the kind of weird she'd like, and the dub is excellent.

Out of the dueling movies that killed 2d western movie animation, Treasre Planet is better than Titan A.E., though mostly because the first is Treasure Island in space while Don Bluth's space movie never really found a consistent tone. Atlantis (from that same era) is also excellent.

Ah one movie might be an interesting choice.

It's animated but it almost looks KINDA live action because like heavy metal and wizards its rotoscoped. but a complete almost one to one rotoscoping with some added hallucinations drawn on top or sci fi effects added.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkjDUERgCQw
Called a scanner darkly.
Man i love the film though for some reason I feel like i'm one of the few.

It's a sci-fi tale about addiction and loss of identity and the war on drugs and what a sense of self is. Based on a phillip k dick story. Just a great flick with some weird animation, particularly a scene where a guy goes into a horrifying psychadelic drug overdose.
It has a good keanu reeves, and a stand out small performance from robert downey junior.
>>
And if you're looking at more modern stuff, here are some okay titles:

Penguins of Madagascar movie was surprisingly decent.

HTTYD 1 and 2 are both very good.

Kung Fu Panda is damn near perfect, KFP2 is either better or worse depending on taste, and 3 is very average.
>>
>>81494122
A fun animated film that rings bells similar to AT and SU?
Watch the Wolf Children.
Your girlfriend will love it.
>>
>>81494759
He didn't mention she is his girlfriend. though since hes trying to pick something out thatll be a good watch my assumption is that is a possible hope...and it wont happen if shes a classy girl if he shows her your goddamn WEABOO bullshit! get out of here with that japanese nonsense.
>>
>>81494677
Also one of RDJ's come back movies!

"You are constitutionally incapable of SHUTTINGTHEFUCKUP!"
>>
>>81494804
The joke is that the Wolf Children is a really sad yet uplifting movie that would most definitely make her cry.
>>
>>81494804
Yeah, not g/f. This is more of an exploratory mission to find out what she's like.

Weeb cartoons are okay too, I know that she's just not as into them.
>>
>>81494891
why not a pixar film

Not quite a movie but Over the Garden Wall is a nice mini-series and the total run time is a little under 2 hours.
>>
>>81494618
>>81494677
Perfect suggestions!

I thought about Titan AE but forgot all about Treasure Planet. It's even one of my favourite Disney films. The Titan AE soundtrack on the other hand is killer...hmm...

I am a huge PKD fan so Scanner is very tempting.

>>81494751
I don't know if she's as into the 3d. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs would be my top 3d pick.
>>
>>81494468
>Trippy is good
Don't know if you want to get involved in the japanese stuff, but Paprika and Mindgame are both pretty good.
>>
>>81494955
Was thinking more 2d than 3d.

>>81494958
I'll check out the trailer. Cooking right now so it may take me a bit.
>>
>>81495036
Paprika goes on the list. Thanks. Will look up mindgame.
>>
>>81494343
Also, Osmosis Jones and Road to El Dorado.

In the great run of "Also Rans" from the twilight of the nineties animation boom, those, alongside Iron Giant and Cats Don't Dance are considered the best.
>>
>>81495134
Anything Satoshi Kon is good.
>>
>>81494958
I can attest to Over the Garden Wall's quality.

>>81495000
Fair point on the 3D. I was just thinking of any recent camrips I'd seen and liked.

Also, two questions-

1. Do you know why she likes AT and SU? Depending on if it's comedy, action, romance, lore, art style/aesthetic, and/or music we can better judge what for you two to watch.

2. How do you want her to react? A comedic movie that makes you two laugh your asses off? A sad/comfy film to get her to snuggle with you? Or a movie with romantic tones to 'subtly' imply your interest in her (if that's your aim).
>>
>>81495142
Shit, throw in Emperor's New Groove as well. It's practically in the same lot culturally.
>>
Song of the sea,
Coraline maybe
Paranorman,
some miyazaki film
all of over the garden wall would be good.
>>
I'm not sure a girl would like ralph bakshi stuff. Good movies on their own though.

You could also do nostalgic stuff, so like, depends on how old you were but the extremely goofy movie is always a blast to watch.
>>
Hell, toss in anything Laika and/or Tim Burton worked on, though it's likely she's seen them.

Nightmare before Christmas
Corpse Bride
Paranorman
Monster House
Frankenweenie I think was okay
Boxtrolls is average but enjoyable.
>>
>>81495357
1) Not sure. We've watched it together before but I didn't really think to ask. I would guess art style, humor and lore maybe?

2) Comedy but with action. This is just a casual hangout this time.

Thanks for helping me think it through a little more.
>>
Rango. Bitches love Rango.
>>
>>81495327
>rip :(
>>
>>81495654
Np. Gotta use this experience somehow, amiright?

And yeah, Miyazaki films in general are a great choice, partially due to being anime and partially because Disney handled the dubbing very well.

Spirited Away is a classic
Howl's Moving Castle is pretty comfy.
Arriety felt unfinished
Mononoke is practically required watching
Naussica is good but reeks of the 80's
Castle in the Sky was pretty good, if kinda forgettable
Kiki's Delivery Service I never really finished but it was pretty good from what I saw.
>>
>>81495928
Howl, Mononoke and Spirited could be good choices.

No love for Porko?
>>
>>81496104
I haven't seen it so I can't pass judgement, but as it's Miyazaki it's likely very good.
>>
>>81496288
>>81496104
I watched the kingdom of dreams and madness and he said that he disliked Porko, (miyazaki)
>>
I'd highly recommend the Secret of Kells. It's gorgeous. Song of the Sea was also very good-looking but the plot wasn't as solid.
>>
Ask her if she wants to rewatch any disney movies she likes.
>>
if ou are in for some stop animation i would recomend truckers and fantastic mr fox
>>
watch the garden of words. just do it.

Seems interesting. I'll have to check it out.
>>
>>81498213
It was pretty damn good until Ice Cube shows up and starts vomiting shit dialogue all over the place. You can't stop thinking GO AWAY the whole time he's there. The twins were really overrated for their role in the film, too.

Overall, visually solid, narratively good.
>>
>>81498887
I meant Porco Rosso and now I feel dumb for spelling it wrong this whole time.
>>
>>81494122

I'm sorry OP but if this grill is into AT and SU it's unlikely that she'll be a Bakshi fan. Her shows are cute and ultimately light, Bakshi is dark and heavy. His lightest is probably Fritz the Cat and even that has a non-consensual sex scene and brutal shooting scene.

>>81494958
This dude though, has the right idea. She might like it or she might LOVE it. If you have Hulu the whole thing is on there, and runs without commercials.
>>
>>81499647
>Bakshi is dark and heavy
After rewatching the Wizards trailer I agree, not a fun times movie

Really. If you're inviting someone over to watch cartoons or a movie there is a good chance they're going to have to use the bathroom. Clean your goddamn toilet you lazy fuck.

Listen to me on this one: Secret of Kells. Fantastic animation, great soundtrack, wonderful story. Everyone I know who's seen it has loved it. It's got a nice mix of "cute," dramatic and spooky.

Definitely will. I have an ex who used to get on my case about it.
