LET US READ THE BEST SILVER AGE STORY OF THEM ALL
>>81448666
No thank you, Satan.
>>81448666
I want to live in Miller's future where all the tv personalities and hot people have short hair.
It is kind of terrifying how thinking about people laughing at the media politics this book portrayed when it came out
And then to look at the landscape now.
>>81448666
>dat side cut
HE TRIED TO WARN US
>the worst Miller story
No thanks, but go on so I can hide this thread.
>>81448727
>It is kind of terrifying how thinking about people laughing at the media politics this book portrayed when it came out
Oh no, they were laughing at other things, pal.
My name is Lewis Lovhaug and I disapprove this comic.
This is one of the first comic books I ever read.
God, it fucking sucks.
>>81448770
why is he so autistic?
>>81448782
Same
Opposite
>>81448737
The atom part was legitimately great and only good thing about this comic
>>81448666
ASBAR storytime for best golden age story of them all when?
>>81448813
>Captain Marvel
>The Question
>Hal
Also contenders I think
>>81448782
What is bad about it.
>inb4 figures and faces are the most important part of graphic art
>inb4 the plot is too crazy
>>81448826
I am not a Lee fan
>>81448813
It is a great tone setter for the brilliance of the story to follow
>>81448838
The Best Barry Allen in DC comics.
>>81448870
One of the most stylish versions of the costume too
This is easily my favorite DC comics Event
The book that more purely captures the feeling of looking through to a different distant insane world.
>>81448870
Hey I'm Robin. But I'm a cat now with roller skates!
>>81448826
>>81448888
i hate this Flash costume
>>81448847
>faces are the most important part of graphic art
This is /co/ most people base quality on whether or not they want to fuck the characters. It's why the most common complaint against Quietly is " potato face"
Art is meh-tier, but the coloring is fucking atrocious in this book.
>>81448978
I think the shorts may be pushing it, but the black with the yellow lightning is rather expressive.
... is that Catwoman/Cheetah in roller-skates?
>>81449003
I think you meant Groundbreaking and Ahead of its time.
>>81449023
nah its Carrie Kelly
isn't that thing with Miller and JrJr about the Joker supposed to come out soon?
>>81449024
No, it's pretty awful.
>>81449003
I think the problem is that Miller didn't have the ability to, or was too lazy to draw backgrounds a lot of the time, so you end up with these shitty all color backgrounds, which are never good, but they make the coloring look worse. If the scenes were composed with actual backgrounds and logical lighting and such it would be better
I love this and ASBAR
>>81449088
I think you are missing the right answer. He doesn't draw them when they aren't needed and does when he does.
The dayglo colors amplify it.
>>81448847
Awful art. Like... Really really awful art.
Not even bothering to draw backgrounds awful.
Multiple Double splash pages for literally no reason with awful drawings.
The ugliset early 00's Photoshop filter gradients you've ever seen that have aged worse.
Terrible "throw every DC hero/villain shit at the wall and see what sticks" plot
M-muh 9/11!
Its completely inexcusably bad. The fact you unironically like it just shows people will seriously like shit to be a contrarian edge lord.
No, you don't really like the art you just want to be a special snowflake.
Heh Holograms who would ever believe it.
>>81449061
The Last Crusade, May 25th.
>>81449161
Your assumption that people can not like a thing because you don't is really funny.
That panel and the black and white to all those colors for the Question is amazing (also I saw something where people think he might be Jimmy Olsen)
>>81449192
I like the implication people just like this to be edgy. real hardcore being a fan of a mainstream JLA story
People are not true fans of Superheroics they are fans of boxes to put it in.
This book breaks those walls down and makes people upset
>>81449141
Don't be a millerdrone dude. His art is definitely really good in this comic, I love the fights and I love the caricature and I love the talking heads and advertisements, but compared to DKR there is about 1% of the effort put into background work in this comic and you cannot tell me that is a purely artistic decision.
>>81449256
Why?
The color work in this book is breathtaking and BLOWING IT OUT is in total contrast to Returns like a lot of this book.
It makes the most sense to be deliberate.
At first I didn't like brute Lex but it's really grown on me
>>81449215
maybe the best page in the book senpai. a contender.
>>81449255
i didn't make the connection before but this + Carrie's scooter and there's a real 4th World undercurrent going on
There are no small gestures in this book you are either as Small as an Atom or Twice as Big as you can Imagine.
>>81449161
So yes, figures and faces are the most important part of graphic art? Because the layouts and action in this book are still really solid. Agree on the backgrounds and am 50/50 on the coloring
>"throw every DC hero/villain shit at the wall and see what sticks" plot
>only 2 villains in the book both Superman related that have a history of joining forces
So yes also "The plot is too crazy"
>I don't like it so everyone who likes it is a contrarian edgelord
If I wanted to be a contrarian edgelord I would have skipped over this and started talking about Holy Terror
>>81449288
Don't worry about it, people here would rather have illustrators than cartoonists making their comics
>>81448956
I hate this page. Everything about it.
The next 2 pages are the best 2 Barry Allen pages that exist.
>>81448666Still don't hate this book
>>81449288
Because if he wanted to contrast the noir style he would use Kirby style backgrounds rather than fucking nothing.
>>81449255
Who knew you could make people upset by doing a sequel to one of the best comics ever but make it look like shit.
>>81449530
But that is Old
The Kirby Method is not to recreate what he did Anon. It is to peer into a world that looks like nothing else.
Is to create something new
>>81449467
No I'd prefer a cartoonist doing the layouts, figures, faces, action and lettering, and an illustrator doing the background like in Cerebus. If you're not going to do backgrounds at least don't make them horrible monochromes that contrast with the coloring of the scene. I like this comic a lot by the way, I just don't like this one aspect of it
>>81449530
>Kirby style backgrounds
Kirby did a bunch of flat color backgrounds in close ups. He went detail heavy in his splash and double page spreads
>>81449405
>"he crosses the line"
>kills someone
>Batman kills someone in the last issue
Its OK if Bruce does it!
>>81449570
> to create something new
Don't say those words around Marvel/DC
>>81449570
But lack of backgrounds is not new or good
>>81449639
That isn't what I am saying.
You keep singling out a piece of the whole and treating it like it is the whole.
>>81449638
This book was when it was coming out something that looks like nothing had ever looked before.
>>81449626
He listens to the young
>>81449454
>>81449470
Amazing work here. Two whole pages. Just look at the story being told. Fantastic stuff.
>>81449655
But I don't treat it like it is the whole, I said I like the comic and the art, I just don't like the lack of backgrounds.
The best Wonder Woman has ever looked.
I always liked TDKSA. It's fucking awful but incredibly entertaining. Everything in it is insane and there is some genuinely good stuff sprinkled in.
Frank Miller is great. Even if some of his books are bad, they're never boring.
>>81449470
Why can't I hold all these filters?
>>81449717
I think the choice of when to have them or when to use solid effects or filters contributes to the art as a whole.
You liking the art is you liking how the lack/backgrounds play with it.
>>81449723
Okay, now you're just trolling.
>>81449769
that costume is INCREDIBLE
>>81449723
No I like this one piece Miller and Terry Austin did for what I assume was a failed pitch, I'll post after the storytime
>>81449723
>cums so hard she causes earthquakes and tsunamis
How many people did her and supes kill with their super fucking?
>>81449754
And I think that they don't use them nearly enough, and that I like the art in spite of the backgrounds and wonky coloring in some areas.
>>81449626
He doesn't kill anyone, he just doesn't save him.
>>81449795
Now really, but alright
>>81449024
You can defend this book all you want, there are parts that work, but Varley's coloring was out of control in parts.
She was over experimenting with the digital coloring, which granted wasn't uncommon for the era with alot of art, but the shitty photoshop filters and pixelization ruins a good deal of the book.
>>81449688
>Hal Jordan was the shit!
>I mean that in a good way!
Good to know ol' Frank is keeping up with the lingo of the times.
>>81450000
You are describing exactly what I like about it.
>>81449985
Giant.
Green.
Kryptonite.
Boxing Gloves.
This book is perfect.
>>81450000
Quads for truth.
>>81450076
This must be the worst page so far art-wise.
>>81450070
>posting images in a storytime
I know you feel like you simply HAD to post a dubsman reaction image to a get, but come on man
>>81450029
>I like because its bad
There no accounting for taste.
>>81449192
I do say I really like this version of Lex for some reason, I don't think I've ever seen someone do a similar version. It's like if Lex ends up aging the same way Marlon Brando did.
>>81450143
The things you post can be taken as both a negative and a positive.
Going to far with filters and insane coloring can be both a positive and negative depending on who is looking at it.
>>81450114
See this is where I know a lot of people who criticize this book are retarded, this portion of the comic is shitting on Liefield style oversexualized art and anti hero storytelling ("Are they Superheroes or Assholes!?"), that the only reason people buy that garbage is because they're lonely permavirgins looking for a power and wank fantasy.
>>81450263
The bottom panel of this page is quite possibly my favorite Batman panel of them all.
>>81450219
Which one is this power fantasy or wank material?
>>81450144
>>81450179
>>81450200
6 splash pages of amazing storytelling!
A true master of structure at work
>>81450219
That doesn't explain why two thirds of the pages look like rough sketches that accidentally got sent out for coloring before they could be cleaned up. I know neat and tidy has never been a Frank Miller thing, but fuck if these don't look just plain sloppy.
>>81449255
I hated the Batboy costume designs.
>>81450297
1) That really doesn't look that bad to me, I thought for sure you were talking about the broken spine women
2) while I'm not up to date on my early 2000s right wing political talk show hosts, given the caricature he uses in this book that is almost certainly a caricature of someone on tv
>>81450325
Simplified style due to Miller wanting to cut loose and have fun. Which also makes it the perfect reaction to DKR
>>81450200
I suppose nobody died here right? Of course not.
>>81450000
Old comics were colored in bright, bold colors, usually by people with little to no art training or experience. Women who were looking for a quick job where usually hired. They were told to use bright colors hat'd reproduce easily and colors that'd separate figures and objects easily.
That's what Miller told Varley to do, basically. color it as if an old school colorist was given access to photoshop. Slather it with loud colors and textures and junk.
>>81450362
Of course people will die.
>>81450314
the first one is bad, the second one not great but excusable, however the third one is pretty awesome
>>81450359
>caricature of someone on tv
Someone who smeared blueberry all over his face?
>>81450405
Coloring, not Miller.
>>81450367
Make it look like nothing on the shelves next to it. Make it look like another world just beyond your fingers.
He gets rejuvenated and his costume reverts to an older era
>>81450361
>Miller wanting to cut loose and have fun
He was lazy. Jesus fuck, Anon, how autistic can you get?
>>81450475
You can't seem to see something as being more simplistic as anything other than a negative can you?
>>81449137
I'm ashamed to admit that it took me until the entire house painted in yellow to realize it was parody
>>81449215
not to be edgy, but this page makes me uncomfortable.
>windows 10
>>81450276
>The bottom panel of this page is quite possibly my favorite Batman panel of them all.
Right there with you on that one.
"Striking terror. Best part of the job."
>>81450475
>Jesus fuck, Anon, how autistic can you get?
A great way to get most people to completely dismiss you as just another impotent shitposter is to spout buzzwords. Keep it up! Here's the (You) that you so desperately crave. Maybe next time, try telling him to return to reddit for liking things, or if he does't share your political views, call him a cuck! If need any other pointers feel free to ask.
>>81450381
It's pages like this that make me despise Superman/Wonder Woman shippers
"They're so alike!" and "It's so romantic!" is all just a smoke screen for ME WANT SNU SNU
>>81450505
>simplistic
There are good and bad ways to simplify your art.
It looks like Miller just winged this entire book without drawing any guidelines.
That's as lazy as an artist can get.
>>81450606
We are just going to go around in circles then.
I don't like it therefore it is lazy, I like it therefore it is deliberate.
>>81449723
>>81449769
I do like how tribal her outfit looked here. Imo it really sells the idea that this is a out of time warrior that spent most of her life on a segregated magic island
But then again I'm barely familiar Wonder Woman's history so maybe my opinion is shit
>>81450546
>probably killed thousands by fugging
>"I'm pregnant again"
It doesn't work like that m8
>>81450593
Western "parody" of manga style will never stop being Maximum Cringe
Best Plastic Man coming through.
>>81450652
>Five years
That would mean this happened before the Dark Knight Returns.
>>81450675
exactly what he is going for in that panel.
>>81450586
Spoken like a true cuck
>>81450703
Oh for fuck's sake, just stop it already.
>>81450631
>>81450652
I've always loved these pages.
>>81450729
You don't think Frank Miller knows the difference when it comes to that stuff?
Frank Miller who is one of the biggest reasons that stuff came to this side of the world at all.
>>81450741
Yeah, this still makes me butthurt
>>81450367
There's a way to do bright vivid colors but they should've done it right. You can look at where they used photoshop to take shortcuts. Hell I could recreate some of it in like 30 minutes. I can tell where they used the stroke tool to add outlines to objects and it causes a gross jagged outline. It's not well done.
>>81450675
Eh it's literally one panel, if it had been an extended character it'd really be bad
>>81450741
This is kinda one of my favorite pages ever. It manages a Jump Scare in a comic.
>>81450051
Makes me think of how big cosplay/cosplay boudoir has gotten in the last few years.
Holyshit this art is fugly.
Thanks OP! I've never read this or TDKR. If someone could be so kind to storytime 3 and the tie in up to this point I'd greatly appreciate it.
People like to jump on this book because once they disagree with it they dismiss it as stupid.
It is too easy a dismissal.
>>81450819
I won't be doing that, not even gonna read that thing.
I just noticed first a Kirby character, second a Ditko one.
Love J'onn as this barkeep from a detective novel.
>>81449188
that book was supposed to be out in feb, it keeps getting pushed back :/
One of the strongest themes throughout this book is the Youth taking over (which is funny seeing Miller respond to something like Occupy)
>>81451098
>which is funny seeing Miller respond to something like Occupy
I assume he was not a fan?
Thanks for posting, HL
I definitely love DKSA and I don't think it deserves all the hate it gets, but you can't deny it's flawed.
I genuinely love Miller's pencilling, but the cheap gradient backgrounds are such garbage. Don't give me that "it was early experimentation with digital coloring" nonsense.
It looked like shit in 2002 and it looks even worse now.
Other than that I'm pretty much onboard for everything else. People sometimes forget that there's some really fucked up shit in this. Just because it isn't colored as "dark and gritty" as DKR doesn't mean there aren't plenty of dark moments. Like that orphanage that was conducting genetic experiments. Or Captain Marvel's last hurrah.
>>81451146
putting it lightly
>>81451149
I don't understand why it is so hard to accept that people can accept the bold garish things about this book as positives.
>>81451146
He viewed it as being fairly ineffectual, and twentysomething hipsters at the time jumped down his throat.
>>81451146
hoo boy you could say that.
>Everybody's been too damn polite about this nonsense:
>The "Occupy" movement, whether displaying itself on Wall Street or in the streets of Oakland (which has, with unspeakable cowardice, embraced it) is anything but an exercise of our blessed First Amendment. "Occupy" is nothing but a pack of louts, thieves, and rapists, an unruly mob, fed by Woodstock-era nostalgia and putrid false righteousness. These clowns can do nothing but harm America.
>"Occupy" is nothing short of a clumsy, poorly-expressed attempt at anarchy, to the extent that the "movement" – HAH! Some "movement", except if the word "bowel" is attached - is anything more than an ugly fashion statement by a bunch of iPhone, iPad wielding spoiled brats who should stop getting in the way of working people and find jobs for themselves.
>This is no popular uprising. This is garbage. And goodness knows they're spewing their garbage – both politically and physically – every which way they can find.
>Wake up, pond scum. America is at war against a ruthless enemy.
>Maybe, between bouts of self-pity and all the other tasty tidbits of narcissism you've been served up in your sheltered, comfy little worlds, you've heard terms like al-Qaeda and Islamicism.
>And this enemy of mine - not of yours, apparently - must be getting a dark chuckle, if not an outright horselaugh - out of your vain, childish, self-destructive spectacle.
>In the name of decency, go home to your parents, you losers. Go back to your mommas' basements and play with your Lords Of Warcraft.
>Or better yet, enlist for the real thing. Maybe our military could whip some of you into shape.
>They might not let you babies keep your iPhones, though. Try to soldier on.
>Schmucks.
>FM
I generally hated the OWS movement as well but apparently Frank was unable to voice his opinion on it without spewing about his hateboner for radical Islam.
You can think it is ironic or trolling or what have you.
This stuff looks AWESOME
>>81451188
>I don't understand why it is so hard to accept that people can accept the bold garish things about this book as positives.
I absolutely understand what Miller was doing. He really grew to despise the "dark & gritty" label being thrown his way even a few years after TKDR.
I don't mind the bright, vibrant colors. I just singled out the gradient backgrounds because they look like shit.
>>81451261
Oh dear
He certainly is intense
>>81451261
Goddamn, he's as intense as his writing. Bless that man's heart. We need more people like him
>>81451289
>This stuff looks AWESOME
I love the idea that Hal just said Fuck It I am out and got an alien wife.
>>81451261
>you can't have a view/voice in this completely unrelated matter because Islam and terrorists!
>>81451389
He truly is the hero of /co/.
The best 3 pages of Captain Marvel that exist.
