I think Brian Michael Bendis is the best thing to happen to comics in the last twenty years. He's a fantastic writer and he's really made the medium accessible and friendly to a lot of different demographics. It doesn't hurt that he's really pushed for more tolerance and diversity in characters and stories as well.

Even when i can see the amounts of salt that this image was conceived on, it does make a point.
Often these days, publishers try to add diversity in a really superficial and cheap way, changing the skin tone of a character, their sexuality or gender will not build on its own a true relatable character for those audiences they try to reach.
Miles is a good example of trying to have actual character development, what they did to Iceman on the other hand was just some awful "hey we need to turn someone gay so it feels like we have a more diverse team" you can't just do that to a character in such a gratuitous and lackluster way, it's disappointing to the fans who were already there and makes the new audience leave because in the end they don't find actual substance on the character to relate to.
