/co/, how do you feel about Blizzard cinematics? Do they stand on their own or are they just big-budget product placements?
>>
You definitely don't get as much if you don't play the game, but they're usually good enough to get people interested.
>>
I think they're great, they should do a movie with that style instead of the weird live action/cg hybrid they've got going in the Warcraft movie.

They should do Starcraft and Warcraft movies, maybe some Overwatch too I guess, don't really care about that game but I'd pay money to watch something like WotLK cinematic but 2hrs long.
>>
>>81433156
Overwatch just came out with 2 6 minute cinematics. The one starring Winston is GOAT, the Tracer one not so much.
>>
Are all the cinematics peeps internal or is the talent outsourced to the animation industry?
>>
>>81433035
They're pretty damn impressive, I'll give them that. Credit where credit is due and all.
But they also started a trend with game developers selling their game to rubes by using a trailer that pretty much could be nothing remotely like the game, which is not a particularly good legacy to have.
>>
>>81433035
They have the audio down for all of them. All the sounds immerse me in the visual. Just my take away
>>
>>81433223
To be fair, Blizzard never tries to sell you on the gameplay. Their cinematics are always based around themes and characters. You can have some general nods to the gameplay, like a Warlock casting Hellfire to kill a bunch of murlocs. It's not gonna look remotely as badass or fun as it does in the cinematic, but it gets the general idea across of the Warlock class.

The problem with most video game cinematics is that they're all flash and no substance. Gimmicky action sequences that, like you said, aim to sell games to rubes (lookin at you The Order: 1886)

>Blizzard makes what seem like some of the most impressive cinematics I've seen
>The World of Warcraft movie is going to be live-action with some basic CGI tossed in

I know they could do it if they really wanted to. It'd take forever to make, but it's doable
>>
>>81433035

I just watched Starcraft 2's cinematics, and they work really well having not played a Starcraft game since Brood War.
>>
>>81433624
I dunno, the recent TV spots have been looking pretty good. The CGI has notably improved.
>>
So what cinematics are your favorites, /co/?

I remember playing the Wolverine movie game and the intro was pretty bloody and sets the tone for the main game's gameplay.

Assassin's Creed Revelations was pretty great. Shame their comics aren't getting that good publicity or good adaptations in their video games.
>>
>>81433035

To be fair, a couple of minutes of animation are exponentially easier to polish than a featture length film.

Still quite an acomplishment.
>>
>>81433759
Ezio was just a great character in general. His personal story could stand on its own as a compelling narrative.

>>81433798
His stories could've been done better. The biggest con in the games is that they never shed light on the main villains besides "They authorized these evil things, look at these short scenes where they give no shits about us poor people" whereas III, IV and Rogue were great in balancing the evils of both organizations.
>>
>>81434076
The antagonists always left something to be desired, but Ezio as a character was always fun and interesting. He's has a great dynamic that works in a number of different scenarios, both light and heavy. He would definitely shine with against a good villain.

Did they even have the rights to Reynolds's face?
>>
>>81433035
They give you a true sense of Azeroth, since the graphics were simplistic and the zones simple representations of the world.

Forgive the pun, but that specific cinematic is chilling.
>>
>>81434076
I have to say, I was pretty impressed that they had Connor's father as a villain in III and they didn't double down on "muh father issues" with him.
>>
>>81434164
It's super frustrating because Blizzard KNOWS how to strike at those emotional chords without being overbearing about it. Terenas' voice-over as a juxtaposition to the monster his son continues to be FANTASTIC cinematic storytelling.

Independent of their relationship with video games, yeah, Blizz cinematics are strong on their own.

So excited for Dark Souls 3. I got super far in DS1 but then my computer borked and I lost all motivation. Never got around to 2, and I didn't enjoy Bloodborne because I prefer a slow, tanky style of gameplay.

With a new computer, I'm more than ready to get my soul crushed.

The thing about Dark Souls lore is that it's very open ended. You have your basic script, then everything else is just hints and whispers.
It means that you can come up with some pretty interesting story ideas, but it also means that you get some really autistic theorycrafting.
>>
>>81433035
Square Enix Visual Works is better.
Especially Advent Children and the trailer for Kingsglaive were pretty good.
They have been good with realistic human characters that don't look too realistic and averting the uncanny valley.
Only Pixar was a good match for them in realistic human character design as Inside Out has proven.
I wish Pixar and/or Square Enix will make a movie trilogy based on Final Fantasy VI.
>>
>>81434889
I wonder if they've ever done a Mountain Dew placement on an HD cinematic trailer.
>>
So here's a thought: what makes a good cinematic? Interesting and fun visuals, like Battlefront, or something that tries to tell a story? With such a limited amount of time, can you even effectively tell a story?
>>
>>81434819
so many video game makers want to make movies instead of games

and here we have blizz's inhouse cinematic team, so good at making movies, but they only makes games.
>>
>>81434929
Let's start on the low-end of weeb and work out way up.
As for what I'm looking for, something with a good story and characters would be nice. I mentioned I loved party building, so having multiple party member options would be cool.
And, if at all possible, not too grindy. That's what fucked me on the FFXII, I was constantly under-leveled.
>>
>>81434953
Oh look it's BEST GIRL EVER.
>>
>>81434998
I find the best games have a bit of both. Most have really elaborate cutscenes with cool action sequences, but then a lot of simpler cutscenes that drive the story more.

Tales sounds right up your alley then. The Tales series is pretty low-key in terms of what it demands of the player. It's more on the ARPG side in that the combat is, and I phrase this loosely, a beat-em up with magic and stats. Gameplay is fun and can get as deep as you want it to be.

As for the story and characters, you get your typical savior of the world bullshit but most of the Tales games do a nice job of subverting archetypes and tropes. It's pretty self-aware of the genre its in.

For a starting point, I recommend Tales of the Abyss on PS2 or 3DS, or Vesperia if you have a 360. I don't know how the PC port of Symphonia is doing, but if it's been fixed definitely check that out as well.

A good enough story that can be told in the time, and cinematic pacing/direction. You need to be snappy.

>>81435014
Alright. how about we start out with Digitial devl saga 1/2 on the PS2 (You can emulate it I imagine, or buy them on PS3 as classics). Post apocalyptic setting where a band of warriors gets infected by a virus that turns them into cannibalistic demons. You get to eat your enemies and use the shit you get from them to improve your characters, so you get to build them as you go. Not too grindy.

Ys: Oath of Felghana or Origins, on the PC. Action RPG's that are quite challenging, but oh so satisfying. Light on story, though.

Trails in the sky: On PC. Trilog of games (only 2 are out in the west though). If you like a lot of fucking story and character development, these games are right up your alley. The stories are more about local events than saving the world and shit.

Past that, the various Shin megami tensei games are potentially fun. Not as focused on characters/story, but you get to make your party through recruiting and combining demons.
>>
>>81435087
Oh shit, I remember seeing Tales of Symphonia ages ago and thinking it looked cool. I was especially interested because of the Wandering Skeleton Swordsman you can challenge. He seemed cool.
Do you have any recommendations for turn-based combat? I always liked that in Golden Sun, having to plan a couple turns in advance to stay alive.

That's been around forever. It's just a continuation of box cover art promising a lot more than the machines could ever deliver. (40-mumble anon who used to own a 48K ZX Spectrum back in the 80s)

The specs on the recent Legion cinematic were fucking insane: 20 hours to render a frame, etc. Must be all those gnomes hidden in the backgrounds.
>>
>>81435143
If you want a traditional RPG, go with the recommendation by >>81435134 and check out Trails in the Sky. They're pretty above average in the JRPG community, but as a way to get into the genre it's a good start.

Are you willing to explore things beyond traditional turn-based JRPG format? What I mean is, not having a party where you go down the list and choose each person's action, have the enemy go, and rinse and repeat. If you're open to exploring, check out Valkyria Chronicles or Fire Emblem. They're more on the strategic side of JRPGs. Valkyria Chronicles is on Steam and regularly goes on sale. Boiling it down to its very basics, you control an army and move each of the individual units around a map to fight the enemy in a 3D plane. Each turn you get to choose who you want to move then move and act per character. Incredibly weeb story and cast, but fun nonetheless.

These aren't really cinematics, but I like it when they mix 2D and 3D/cel-shaded animation. Letting effects that work better in one medium blend into the other. Catchy music also helps.

Skill. Most orcs are very savage and sloppy in fights from everything Ive seen. Also they have thick armor and sharp swords.
>>
>>81436917
>>81436767
The humans were initially steamrolled by the orcs because of sheer number and brutality. The tide turned when they fought back with magic, which the orcs lacked. Humans relied heavily on wizards and the power of the Holy Light to give them the upper hand. In fact, the orc menace was the impetus for the Knights of the Silver Hand as well as the Kirin Tor, organizations of paladins and magi, respectively.

Don't mind me, just being a lore faggot.

Orcs had Warlocks / Necrolytes however, something the Humans did not have.

Kirin'tor existed waaaay before the Dark Portal; It is the ruling government of Dalaran, after all.

I'm sorry, you aren't that much of a lore faggot.
>>
>>81436767
It's simple you see, Humans are direct descendants of 15 foot tall iron vikings and have enough bulk to bench press a moose.

>>
So what races are there in this movie?

And what's the difference between green and brown orcs and why are they fighting?
>>
>>81436998
Fair enough on the Kirin Tor, misremembered facts. That said, the Warlocks didn't do jack shit aside from opening the portal. The Shadow Council was mostly a behind-the-scenes entity.
>>
>>81436958
Kirin Tor existed before the orc threat. They were formed when the high elves shared arcane knowledge with the humans. Orcs also had magic in the form of warlocks, ogre-mages, and death knights(not to be confused with the Arthas death knights which were more like fallen paladins).

>>81437017
This. Humans in Warcraft are built big, just not as big as the orcs.
>>
>>81437042
VERY condensed summary of events
>Dwarves, Elves, Humans, Trolls, Orcs, Gnomes, Tauren
>Green orcs are orcs corrupted by demon voodoo magic juju that turned them into bloodthirsty murder machines
>Brown orcs are the ones that forsook that option and remained untainted
>Orcs are fighting humans because their homeworld (yes, world) went to shit, so they're conquering human territory to survive
>>

Most of the Warcraft books are good. Day of the Dragon is a pretty easy read and entry into the universe. It portrays important events and does a decent job of getting you up to speed on recent history and politics.

The best way, really, is to play WC3. The game still holds up to this day and has a fantastic story.

Oh, so they come from a different dimension, or what?

Could you like give a brief summary of every race, noteworthy attributes, skills, etc?

I disagree, remember the Daemon unit summoned units from Warcraft 1? They most assuredly did their fair share, especially the Necrolytes.

You're lucky Warcraft is one of my favorite fictional universes, so I will absolutely LOVE to tell you more about the world.

Dwarves
>Sturdy and strong
>Many different tribes/subraces, including your typical smithy mountain dwarves as well as shamanistic forest dwarves
>Deeply entrenched in the history of creation

Elves
>Wise and ancient
>ALSO has many different subraces and branches
>One of the oldest races
>Naturally attuned to magic and nature

Humans
>They're humans
>Different kingdoms. Many have fallen and only the city-state of Stormwind remains as the last big human power
>Incredibly versatile

Trolls
>Another ancient race
>Also with many subraces
>Generally lithe and stalkery
>Once possessed an empire that spanned continents
>Modern orcs and trolls are considered very close allies

Orcs
>Big, brutish, generally either bloodthirsty or noble; can be both at times
>From another planet and teleported to the human world so their race could survive
>Magic users are either Shaman (nature wizards) or Warlocks (corrupted shaman)

Gnomes
>Tiny race that is big on engineering
>Steampunk
>Smart and crafty
>Run out of their home of Gnomeregan after gnome-zambie plague
>Now residing with in mountain Dwarf city of Ironforge while they try to retake their home

Tauren
>Cow people; big, strong, wise. Native American stereotype.
>Were on the bring of annihilation by centaurs until saved by orcs/trolls
>Now part of the Horde and allied with orcs and trolls
>Also consist of different factions
>Heavily in tune with nature. Considered the Horde equivalent of Night Elves.

The Warcraft universe is massive and complex. If you want to learn more, look into the books or play WC3.

Events of WC1 and 2 are generally retconned, as Blizzard hadn't really planned a cohesive story. They made a game first and foremost. It was when WC3 rolled around that they more or less finalized their decisions for the universe. In the books since, orc combat has pretty much only been carried out by foot soldiers.

I always liked them, the original cinematic and the BC one's still hit me hard with nostalgia.

Remember, Lothar was going to parley under a banner of truce and Doomhammer ambushed him with a squad of the Horde's best warriors. He wasn't killed in personal combat.

Wake up sheeped people!

This is also a good place to look. Type in just about anything and you should find some lore to read up on.
