Batman is the biggest, most high profile book at DC. DC like Tom King and want to see him succeed (hence the exclusive contract) and so they decided to put him on Batman to make him a more well known name. And as a fairly new writer in the business when you're offered Batman, you don't say no. Besides it's not like writing Batman is a chore for him, he probably still enjoys it and has stories to tell in that corner of the DCU.

No, his flaws are that he's headstrong, stupid and irresponsible. Outside of GL: Rebirth and that one Darkseid War tie-in comic from a while ago, I can't even remember a time where he brought up his Dad.
