In corporate chain retail unless you call the customer a niggerfaggot or try to touch their cooch no one gives a fuck, unless they wanted to fire the person already.

I used to love calling my manager because 9/10 they would just tell them the same thing I told them several times while I get to walk away and do something else.

Is that common for the manager to work the counter? Most places I go to they're usually in the back doing desk work. The only time I see them doing basic work is at a grocery store but that's only because they're a department manager and the store managers are usually doing desk work.
>>
sure would be nice with some context. This could be anything from a wrong order or a complaint that someone scrawled racial slurs on the bathroom walls with their shit
>>
>>81383039
Depends. I worked at a gas station and the manager worked the counters all the time in-between doing managerial stuff. Interfacing with the customers on a personal level was tremendously important to him and his business.
>>
>>81383039
>Is that common for the manager to work the counter?
Yeah because you sometimes don't have enough people at the job.

It's not a very cushy job.
>>
>>81383039
I manage a small retail store and yeah, I'm usually behind the counter/on the floor just as much as I am in the backroom doing stuff. It's commission-based and I'm understaffed so it's both beneficial and necessary for me to be on the floor.
>>
>>81383118
That "You know what?" is the first line of dialogue implies that it was some sort of personal complaint.

But this comic isn't really meant to tell a concise story, it's more to illustrate a how one feels in that situation.
>>
>>81383118
Yeah I really wish I could take this simple and straightforward joke and be judgemental to the mostly fictional people involved.
>>
>>81383039
Depends the place. For my last retail job we only would have 3-4 people on a shift everyone would be up front to help out. As the manager I pretty much just made sure the other three weren't totally fucking up.

I was only able to pull OP 2 or 3 times but god damn as a poor college student who got promoted way to fucking early those were the reasons I kept getting out of bed every morning.
>>
>>81382918
>getting consistent customer complaints
Niggas deserve their chewing out then. People are the easiest fucking shits to please unless they're just cunts or you are a sperg.

I worked retail through 5 years of undergrad and while they take complaints of rudeness or being a cunt seriously, if you're new they'd ask you your side or ask whoever was training you to keep an eye on you or whatever.

But 99% of the time it's just soccer moms flipping their shit about it taking too long to find someone, some bitch trying to get one over on a price/something being labeled wrong, or someone that reads one of those shitty magazines that totes some mantra you about causing a ruckus in the middle of transactions in order to get a discount as some lifehack.

Nah because it was just written word before someone made a comic of it, the original didn't have any connotation to race and played out the same.

Some people just think they can get whatever the hell they want by demanding to speak to a manager and their confidence usually stutters when they realize they've been mouthing off to the manager the whole time.
>>
>>81381278
I once had this happen to me

At the place I work, we have had plenty of customers causing problems at the register. And every time, we tell them that they can always spend twice the money at the other store down the road. They leave in a huff and are back the next week.
>>

>or take their money with them somewhere else

Yeah but the thing is unless it's a mom and pop shop nobody actually gives a shit if they lose out on one customer except the customer themselves. You run into a lot of dicks in retail but the fair majority are decent and won't just flock to another shop because of one guys bad review as they'll generally realize that person was being an ass. >I worked retail so I know shit.

Retail work is literally organized standing. It will be replaced by robots in the very near future and the era of pretentious faggots whining about how difficult it is to stand and follow directions will finally be over.

It is social responsibility to disrespect every retail worker you come into contact with. Don't tip them or acknowledge their existence.

We take customer service seriously, but it comes down to who's getting the complaint

I remember telling a lady we didn't have the item she was upset cause the website said we had it

She asked for manager

Manager talked to her she complained about me saying I cussed her out and told her to leave me the fuck alone

Manager looked at me then her, your she he cussed you out

She nodded confidently he just looked her like she was crazy and did his best with her
>>
>>81384354
Are you actually an idiot or do you just play one online?

Every place has bad customers, the kind who will complain about every single item, every single detail, will demand they receive something for free or discounted, will whine and take up valuable time and employee attention from other customers, will cause a scene, will buy something and then return it and want to reuse the same coupon they used to buy it, will find invisible hairs in their food and inform the cook after they eat it that there was a problem and so they should be comped, will argue that a sales sign that clearly indicates which items are on sale actually apply to everything, will explain to you why your store policy that is as clear as day is wrong because "the customer is always right".

They are not worth your time.
They are not worth the minuscule amount of money they MIGHT spend.
They do not have enough social sway to make a dent in your business.
Their antics actively drive other customers away.

You can either send them away kindly or sternly. But either way, if you value the money you make, you need to get rid of them quickly.
>>
>>81383039
I have never worked at a place that was fully staffed, so managers were regularly doing everything they didn't have enough employees to cover doing. The shitty ones hid themselves in the backroom and let their stores deteriorate.

The whole robot fantasy is so ridiculously impractical and just seems like jacking off to that weird anti-retail worker fetish. Crying for a real human being is a lot of people's natural reaction to any given problem with an automated system. Self-checkouts are the closest thing to a widespread success as far as automation in retail goes, and there has to be an attendant on hand to make sure people remember how to put things in bags.

Besides, it'd only really be profitable to switch to automation in big cities. McDonalds and the like are so big because they're everywhere. A franchise owner in a small town isn't going to be able to justify costs to switching to an automized system anytime soon.

Honestly it doesn't get any better the more you rise. Once you're in management you have to deal with corporate scumfucks and lazy workers.
Once you're in bottom level corporate you have to deal with YOUR incompetent managers while pleasing the higher ups.
Once you get to the higher ups you have to deal with all the bullshit below you trying to keep it from overflowing while pleasing the shareholders / CEO.
If you're the CEO or a shareholder then if you didn't want to do it you wouldn't be fucking doing it and would let somebody else earn all the money and take all the responsibility.

>>81383477
Depends on the corporate structure.
Companies with massive, multi-state multi-locations will usually fire and hire at will, depending on the individual stores needs.
I work as a manager at a such a store and got fired for causing a bitchfit at two customers but because of how shit the GM runs the store and the lack of applicants I was asked to come back the next month.
>>
>>81397572
Widespread automation of the retail industry is retarded. It doesn't really benefit anybody. The rich have to spend a ridiculous amount of money to hammer out the kinks in such a system if its even possible, have to spend an enormous amount of money in the initial investment, and that initial investment might not even pay for itself over time in the saved cost of buying thousands of dollars of machinery just to shit out burgers and stock shelves.
And then you just cut out an enormous amount of the workforce so you have even less people able to buy your products.
The automation of retail and service industry is just a retarded meme. The most you're going to have is self-checkouts.
>>
>>81405354
Not to mention, with more machinery comes more maintenance. I've heard people say they'd have to higher fewer technicians than retail workers, but they'd also have to pay trained specialists significantly more in order to keep their machines running.

It would only make sense if the cost of maintenance per machine as well as its energy consumption is less than a human retail worker.

Which I doubt it would ever be. You think teaching some stoner how to do his job is hard? Try teaching it to a system of expensive machines that cost the money a shitload of money every time they break down and would cost a fortune to replace and have to also be updated every single time something changes in the store as well as being synchronised to the information with all the other machines in the store.

Jesus, you're have to also hire an IT team to deal with the software and databases, both centrally and locally in order to account for different store layouts, local marketing changes and seasons.

It'd be a hugely expensive nightmare.

she kept shouting 'I know my rights!' and to speak with the manager. Somehow, when the manager came, we ended up getting the most expensive one for free, probably just to get us out of the store because we'd been there for about twenty minutes

it was really a horrible time I didn't even want the games afterwards

It really depends where you are. The boss and the customers can drastically change what it means to work in a place. For that matter kitchen and FOH can be worlds apart in the same restaurant.

And everyone likes to bitch about strangers being assholes. Service isn't the most physically demanding job I've done, but dishwashing, lithography/etching, groundskeeping, and lumberjacking would all make for some boring and unrelatable conversations or comics.

This reminds me of a story from last year.

I work at a dry cleaner, and we had one customer last September or perhaps August say that we lost a dress she had dropped off. We checked security camera footage (cameras installed specifically because customers routinely ripped us off for big money by saying we lost their clothes) and lo and behold, we had her on camera picking up the dress in question. We tell her we have footage that proves she's lying, she screams at us saying she doesn't give a fuck, so the district manager tells us to just write her a check for it anyway, even though she's wrong.

Well, fast forward several months later, and she never picked up the check, nor did she ever come back to our store at all. I bet a million dollars she found that dress at home after getting so pissed off at us for supposedly losing it, and just couldn't stand to come crawling back to apologize.

There was also another customer a few years ago who would routinely get free dry cleaning by complaining that "I asked for this to be a redo" when we tried to charge him for something, despite NEVER asking that, not even one of the many times he did it, to the point where we would actually make more money if he stopped having his cleaning done at our store. I found out he literally died IRL and I was genuinely happy because it meant I never had to deal with him again.

>Retards ask for higher minimum wage generation after generation, each asking for a better salary than the previous one
>Barely any fucking body understand that inflation is the main reason why they need higher salaries in the first place, thus repeating the same error generation after generation by letting the rate of inflation grow to unsustainable rates while simply asking for more money to compensate said inflation, as if it would somehow improve the situation

It's like watching morons trying to swim a river upward and see them use oars because they believe it will help them to go against the flow, without understanding that you need to be in a boat in the first place for it to work. You do understand that the big issue is that inflation is moving faster than what people are earning, largely stemming from people being afraid to use any of their rapidly declining funds. as well as local markets having no idea how economics works, right?

The wage gap keeps getting bigger and bigger because we arent anywhere near with keeping up with inflation, inflation which would SLOW if the masses were making more money and able to actually spend outside of their immediate needs.
