It obviously didn't work. They intentionally used World War 1 imagery, since to a lot of people World War 1 was an apocalyptic nightmare. You want to make sure that your baseline prototype can be reconfigured to a variety of skins and sizes, right? So theme prototypes just happen to look like humans. The flat-face allows for easy attachment of various "snout" types, and the hairless body's mean all kinds of different fur could be applied. Assume that normal human bone structure doesn't apply (all joints can reverse and bend as needed) and arms can be made to look like wings.

Not so wild guess: Each of these is true in some way, because Morbi would probably find the sight of us trying to pick one truth out of a pile of truths endlessly amusing. Probably one character we've encountered is actually an uncommonly advanced robot (or magical) duplicate of someone else, living or dead, or one will turn up at some point. Freiderich probably has history with Ophelia, romantic or otherwise (I'll laugh if she turns out to be his sister). Mary is most likely related to Mystana in some deeper way than merely being a talentless descendent.
Of course, the reverse would probably be equally amusing...
Wild guess: Humans are involved, but as implied by the picture, will never be seen directly. The whole comic is actually set on Earth, but in a really weird way...
Remember how Poppy was originally designed for a video game? The world of Flora was created by a video game company as an MMORPG setting populated by strong-AI NPCs, governed by a council of "Archetype" AIs, one for each order or family or whatever of NPCs. The entire thing is sitting inside a supercomputer server farm somewhere on a future Earth.
This is why there's nothing "outside" the Floran universe, if I'm remembering Morbi's responses to questions correctly: After one of the Archetype AIs went rogue, granted all the lesser AI's free will and permanently altered the way the world worked, the entire project was repurposed to a passive-observation artificial life simulation and never connected to the Internet. Earth's reality, being a substrate, is probably more correctly defined as "below" Flora.
Spacehenge is the place human players would originally have spawned in at, and is no longer functional.
The Specter of Fate is the original leader of the game project trying to fix the world and get his MMO back by manipulating NPCs. He doesn't particularly care for the free will of the Florans, hence the name that implies that all they will have in the end is Fate, as opposed to Free Will.

I just realized something about the possibility that this is all a rampit AI controlled video game.
Mary/Poppy's Friends robot is exteremly outdated and old, the second oldest is Poppy's model, third but maybe tied with Friedrichs model being the most updated out of all of them. It's an interesting, subtle design, maybe not intentional maybe it is. But especially with Mary and how old she possibly could be or just how many secrets she has; her mother is also one of the oldest magic users right?
Maybe I'm thinking too deeply about it but I find it interesting nonetheless. Even if it's not true Im enjoying this theorycrafting Morbi.

The outfits the Mothers actually wear don't appear in the official church iconography, and Mary tried to pretend she didn't know much about Church lore in any case. But despite that, she knows this is Mystana's hat. So she either is Mystana, or she's at least seen her in person. And saying "this excuse" implies she could have other excuses.
Or she could be granted temporary omniscience by being OOC. And it could just be odd phrasing.
