Wanna' hear a story? Way back in 2007, WB was producing a movie about Captain Marvel. It would've been directed by Peter Segal, the guy who directed the "Get Smart" remake starring Steve Carrell. That was actually the first time The Rock was linked to the Black Adam role.
Segal and his writer viewed the movie as Harry Potter with superheroes. Bright, cheery, fun. They called it "Billy Batson and the Power of Shazam". It had everything. Mary, Freddy, Talky-Twany, Sivana, even Uncle Dudley.
Then "The Dark Knight" came out and WB went through it's edgy phase. All of their movies had to be dark and edgy because that's what made them $1 billion and 94% on RT. Black Adam went from an evil magician who wanted to conquer the world to a bloodthirsty conqueror. Billy Batson himself went from a hopeful 10-year-old to a brooding 15-year-old.
Segal and the writer eventually jumped ship because they simply couldn't make it as dark as WB wanted it without compromising the character. And it was no isolated incident, given we at the same time also had a SE7EN-inspired movie about the Flash in which Captain Cold is a psychotic serial killer who murders his victims by injecting them with a chemical cocktail that "freezes" them from the inside out, then dumps their bodies on riverbanks.
