No matter how much you deny it, the movie seemed tonally rather similar to "new" SpongeBob, though the gag-writing was a lot better and more jokes hit the mark compared to seasons 4+. Spongebob's voice is more higher-pitched; his character is different - in seasons 1-3 he is an immature adult, in the movie he is a "kid". They even drive this point home by showing him having baby toys in his bedroom, and him screaming and crying a lot more than he did in most of the older episodes.
And just as an example of how things have changed, the entire movie is about Spongebob being a kid and teaching kids that that's okay because kids are awesome! Of course, the entire joke in the first three seasons was that he was an adult who acted immature, but still had some "mature" traits that balanced it out. The movie and the seasons that followed stopped any pretense of being simply good cartoons that all ages could enjoy, it just explicitly aimed itself solely at kids.
Rather than writers trying to think of what would make a clever cartoon, they were thinking "what do kids like? Yeah, screaming and crying. Kids laugh at that, right?

SpongeBob is a kid in the same sense that college students are. It's a story about SpongeBob accepting his own immaturity, and learning that he doesn't have to grow up completely or immediately. You didn't seem to get the subtext.
The screaming/crying came from SpongeBob having his dreams crushed, then put in mortal danger and having the pressure of the entire fucking town put on his shoulders.

So much this. It's a great movie and I appreciate it a lot for with it is, but it's like the greeting into post movie Spongebob. Season 4/5 felt like the appetizer , and then Season 6- feels like the shit covered main course.
