I'd have to say it's because of what Cullen brought to the table. He patterned Optimus after his big bro, a man who deeply inspired him. And in turn, set something of a precedent for the character from then on.
It's probably the reason why Optimus just doesn't feel like Optimus unless Peter is the one behind the big guy's voice processor.

I've watched all of Prime and then the G1 cartoon. Peter IS Optimus.

During that scene theres this part where optimus is running down these decepticons. And as a kid i was like 'holy shit theres like a little transformer that lives inside optimus. right in his grill.' And i assumed he was maybe like a prisoner that optimus kept to torture cos he looked scared. And i just thought thats what that was until years and years and years later (like 15 years later.) I honestly love this movie. It is....so unique.
Nothing makes sense, nothing seems real, it's all just fucked up. Watch any scene and none of the characters act like actual human beings. Theyre just these tooth gnashing warped caricatures like a demented being from another plane of sentience decided to try and emulate what it thought human beings would act like.

Shia lebouff just vascillated emotionally between every possible emotion without any reasoning and for ten minutes of the movie gets super super aggressive. I dont even know what the fuck frances mcdormand is doing in there and the last third of the fucking film is just one giant CGI shit fest with a chinese caricature alien being executed before these two lovely scenes where optimus prime is the most unmerciful fuck in the universe.
The entire movie is like shooting up with a mix of mercury and mescaline and its rather beautiful.
