Because they get to be fun AND serious without it seeming out if place. To this day, the only comic that's made me outright cry is the page from the Death of Peter Parker, where Uncle Ben tells him he did a good job. Shit man, they're just so great, like everyone gives Slott and Bendis so much shit but fuck, Bendis wrote Ultimate Spider-man! he's pushing Miles now, but we shouldn't forget that Peter run. Slott maybe burnt out but the guy is still an idea machine whether you like his writing or not, he's just been on it for too long.
But you're so right, they range from happy and lighthearted to your average Spidey team-up to dark and horrifying like say Grim Hunt.
