Why doesn't Superman include the crime-infested Gotham City in his patrols if it's just a stone throw away?

Aren't there more people crying for help there than in Metropolis?
>>

metropolis is in new york
gotham is in jersey
if youre superman you have to ask yourself, is jersey worth it?
the answer is no

How true is that these days?
Anyway, if it's still true, Superman probably doesn't do it because Batman will whine like a little bitch muttering "muh city" between sobs.

Fool, Silver Age was mid-50's to 1960's so it was sometimes like Adam West Batman over there as opposed to some Post-Miller-esque hellhole.
>>
>>81248503

What? No.

Gotham is in Jersey
Metropolis is in Delaware

seriously, just look at the map.

It really was in the comics.

One day someone will do a story taking place in the Silver Age and use the Batman '66 version of Bane taking over Bigville. With appearance by Silver Age-style Bill Wilson.

And this map was from 1978, which set Metropolis in Delaware and Gotham City in New Jersey.
>>
>>81249594
It wasn't in Kansas until the Byrne reboot.

Also, Superman's Fortress used to be outside of Metropolis during the 40's. I think it was the 50's or 60's when they moved it to the Arctic.
>>
>>81249705
Well I'll be damned, the more you know, I guess.

I always figured Metropolis was somewhere in the midwest for some reason, it's weird that it's just a stone toss away from the crime ridden, death trap hellhole that is Gotham.

Is Superman just... Cool with everything that's happening in the other side of the river? Why doesn't he throw the Joker in the Phantom Zone?
>>
>>81248443
>>81249867
It's mostly because Batman has essentially claimed his stake in Gotham, and won't let any other supers help out around there, seeing himself as some sort of sole savior to the city
Although he has accepted help from others if there's an "entire world is in danger" thing going on, or if there's an exceptionally powerful foe in Gotham, but usually he'll use all his resources (all the various bird boys, Barbara, Commissioner Gordon) first before he does that

It's the Silver Age, Gotham's a lot more benign, generally speaking.

Besides, it's not like he doesn't team up with Batman all the damn time.

>Hello, Bruce? Yes, it's Clark here. So, I couldn't help but overhear the anguished cries of pain of dozens of children coming from over there-- Oh, I see, the Joker escaped Arkham again and set fire to an orphanage, but you already got him and are on your way to put him back there. Listen, back in the Fortress there's a way to put him away for sure in a place he can't escape without necessarily killing him, what abou-- No? That's fine. But about that burning orphanage, need any help with that? You got your 12 years old son on it, got it... I mean, I could swing by in two seconds and solve everything with my superbreath but-- No Bruce, you don't need to get your suit of armor, I'll stay out of hair. All right, bye, call me if you need anyt-- *Click* Sigh...

Around the 70's, some comics and fanzines set Smallville in Maryland. But then there was an issue of LOSH that claimed Smallville was set in northeastern Pennsylvania or northern New Jersey. It got ignored later on.

But for most of the Bronze Age it wasn't too far from Metropolis, and arguably Gotham wasn't too terrible in the Bronze Age other than Joker and some other villains being murderous again.

Since Byrne set Smallville in Kansas in 1986, that's how it's been in all media from then on and everyone's gotten used to that idea.

They fuck up more offen than not.
Also, that's a fucking lie:

Green Lantern, Ragman, Simon Dark, Zatanna, Deadman, birds of prey, Creeper, and Jason Blood all are mostly Gothamites.

Batman has a problem with heroes that are not from Gotham fucking up his investigations. Not with other heroes.

Gotham isnt a place where you go and just beat the bad guy.

Well technically the Donner movies put Smallville somewhere in the Great Plains region back in the 70s, and Byrne settled on Kansas because Great Plains Smallville was the most recognisable image of Smallville (and because of the Wizard of Oz connection).

Yeah, I remember this one crossover where Spider-Man tracked Carnage to Gotham, and Bats was a real bitch nigga towards him in a "I CAN'T INVESTIGATE AND LOOK OUT FOR YOU AT THE SAME TIME!" way, though he later apologized, saying he was just on edge because of the Joker (and probably because his previous crossover was with the Punisher).

Non Gotham heroes just don't get it the way Gotham Heroes do. I don't have the page but during No Man's Land Superman showed up and tried to help and Batman told him to fuck off, but he convinced him to let him stay for one day.

Clark teamed up with some guy to get the power back on and they managed to do it. But he had to leave and go fight Mr. Freeze. While he was gone a bunch of citizens showed up to give the enginner offerings for restoring the power and thugs showed up to be his bodyguard.

Superman came back and got all "This isnt the way, this isn't right!" and flew off because that was the way it was now. He and Batman had a conversation about Gotham and hope and he left knowing that only Batman could handle the mess

2. Superman can't do shit in Hub, Blud or Gotham. Aside from Fighting Clayface he can't really help.
>>
>>81258294

What, he can't even prevent some mugging in Gotham? Telescopic vision, flight, and super hearing would at least direct him to the right spot.

Honestly, that's just a big load of bull to justify Batman having his own playground to set his stories in. Editorial knows pretty much any other Leaguer could get rid of all of Batman's rogues in a week and has to make characters who routinely fight gods and alien horrors from deep space be unable to handle de reality of a mugger.

What about the two-part of Superman TAS where he had a cross over with Batman TAS? They showed that Bruce and Alfred had flown to Metropolis in a small jet, not drive across a river.

Also, Metropolis has been shown to be on the edge of an ocean with cliffs instead of sandy beaches. Does anyone know what Eastern states have that kind of geography? The Carolinas come to mind, but I don't know the area.

For real, though. Clark is Clark, first, Superman, second. He's not busting purse snatchers and rescuing cats from trees because he's living his life - but, when disaster strikes, he dons his red and blue underoos to save the day as Superman.

Conversely, Bruce is Batman all the time whether he's wearing the spandex or not. He is full-time terrorizing the criminal underworld or actively investigating crime rings for later terrorization. That means he regularly beats up drug dealers and muggers.

They're very different heroes with very different MOs that deal with very different problems.

To my knowledge there are 2 reasons why Superman doesn't "patrol" Gotham.

1. Superman doesn't have the mental capacity to solve a lot of Batman's cases. Batman grew up in Gotham so he knows how people from Gotham think. He knows how the city can shape people and their personal values, usually for the worst. It takes a certain kind of person to doubt people and their intentions, to always be looking for their flaws, and to only suspect the worst from others. Superman isn't that person. Superman likes to believe there's some good in everyone and that most people have good intentions. He likes to focus on peoples best qualities and "gifts" as he does with his own. In fact its this kind of thinking that makes Superman who he is and why he is a symbol of hope who inspires people all over the world. Having to deal with Gotham serial killers would potentially emotionally burden Superman to the point that he'd become a less effective Superhero. He'd become angry and frustrated like Batman. Nobody wants an angry Superman.

2. The second reason is just genuine respect for Batman. There's kind of an unwritten rule that you don't fight crime in someone else's hometown. At least not without telling them ahead of time or unless the world is in danger. I've never seen a hometown superhero run into a visitor superhero without some kind of argument happening.

Personally I think Batman shouldn't patrol Metropolis and visa versa because you'd have to LEAVE your home town to do it. The people of your city depend on you when you're a superhero. Theres almost a brand loyalty. If people hear Batman's been in Metropolis for a week they'll start to wonder if he doesn't feel like Gotham is worth saving anymore. On top of that, if they lost a loved one to crime in that week, you know they'd just blame Batman for being out of town and BOOM new Supervillain.
