Lex wants to lead humans and shape the world the way he wants to. He wants to be loved and revered for his actions.

He rationalizes it in many ways, that Superman is a danger because he represents complacency and inequality, an end to mankind's ambition and urge to better themselves. Ironically Superman himself is also worried that his actions would cause those very things and he actively avoids trying to do anything that would lead to that. He doesn't want people to worship him as a God, he does everything he can for the betterment of mankind. He doesn't like Lex because he has everything he needs to make the world a better place, and he just squanders it in a pissing match with a guy who couldn't care less about being better than anyone.

I remember in the animated series, the motivation of Luthor comes from his sense of mortality, believes that no matter how great their achievements and success humanity forgot its name in the following generations, but instead in the future all remember Superman and his legend until the end of time.

I actually think that movie Lex would have been received a lot better if he was portrayed by another actor. I particularly liked that his "I believe in human potential and everyone can be their own hero" facade was only explored in the prequel comic, while in the movie he just showed his true colours. Tony Stark (at least in the version of the current cinema) after the attack Chitauli suffers from anxiety attacks due to event near death that experiment and the fact that he knows that if an invasion on a larger scale mankind would have no opportunity to or without Avengers, and in desperation creates a program to protect based on alien technology world ends up becoming Ultron
The point is that both are human in cusp of their potential as leaders of mens and technological vanguard, the difference is at least you try to fix your mistakes even sacrificing his life and the other would rather lose the world before letting an alien save humanity instead of letting him save herself

Lex hates Superman for the reason that he can measure up to Superman.
Lex believes that hard work is the only boundary to success.
If you work hard enough you can accomplish anything. He's the type of genius that believes that people who aren't as smart or successful as him are really just lazy. Afterall, he was able to, with just plain hard work, achieve all that he has.
He doesn't believe in artificial limits.
But Superman is, by definition, an unattainable goal. No matter how hard Lex works, he can never be as strong as Superman.
It's insulting to his world view. Superman is proof that you are ultimately just what you were born to be. When you are born, your limitations are set. You can never exceed them. And that's insulting to Lex because everything he's done in life has been to overcome limitation. Superman suggests that Lex's hard work was for nothing. Lex was simply operating within his inherent boundaries. Nothing more.
Killing Superman would mean to Lex that there are no true barriers. That hard work can even topple the Super Man.
But so long as Superman lives, there is always a thought in Lex's mind that choice has no real matter. We're all just puppets with out predetermined limits and abilities.
That's why Superman has to die.
