I was pondering this after seeing the movie a couple nights ago. Is Nick's smugness so likable and relateable due to it being a defense mechanism created after a traumatic event he suffered as a child? In fact, it could be argued that many cliche character traits could become valid and well thought out if created as a consequence of a character's past experiences, instead of just being inserted for the sake of having a personality?

Holy fuck

This film is good. And the first draft was ALSO good. And we're never gonna see it.

But I can't get over it. I can't stop thinking about it- They've created a world with such incredible story telling opportunities.
>>
>>81198867
Is calling a movie like this out on using coincidence to build suspense a fair criticism? Because there are three separate parts of the movie that rely on coincidence to make sense, and Idk if that's supposed to be "the joke" or not.

1. Hopps getting iced by the Godfather if not for her daughter walking in just in time to save her. This one seems funny until it becomes a plot point later on for solving the case.

2. The driver turning right before Hopps get the vital info. That timing is just incredibly convenient, and I doubt intentionally so due to the fact that Hopps showing up at the train station later was a surprise to them.

3. The phone call after Hopps finds out there's a giant coverup. They could have just slipped out, but her phone conveniently goes off just at the wrong time to create suspense.
>>
>>81195371
It's not that they become more or less "valid" or "well thought out", they want the character to be relatable and understandable, while giving a reason why he acts the way he does.
>>
>>81195371
Looking this deep into yet another talking animal children's cartoon. OP why are you so fucking autistic?
>>
>>81199094
What you're attempting to describe is plot contrivance.

And only your first point really holds up as an example of it. When Manaches turns, we don't know why at first, so that's just another layer of the mystery narrative. Later we find out why he was turned, and how, in a way that actually explains the timing of it rather well.

Your third point is just petty and pedantic. Everyone has their parents call them at inconvenient times, or forgets to silence their phones some time they should have.
>>
>>81199094
While I think every single one of those ultimate just ends up being for a joke and to push the plot along, they would likely have done things a little different if not for some coincidences. Like while he is a mob boss, Mr. Big seems mostly reasonable. He knew Nick well enough that they buried his grandmother in a rug they had him make. He also went out of his way to try and help his florist of all people. I figure if the godmother thing hadn't come up Judy would have just talked to Mr. Big explaining how she was just trying to find all these missing predators and keep the town peaceful. He could have respected that and helped her.

Manches turning wasn't a coincidence. Doug shot him right after they were done talking to him. I guess it could take varying times for different animals, but it doesn't seem that odd.

Phone call yeah, that was convenient and likely just for the "you got a call at a really bad time" gag.

I think a more convenient thing is the night howlers being blue, them using little blue pellets, and Nick getting a love for blueberries all in the last 20 mins or so. Bellwether even mentions she'll dart every predator in town, but they're paintball pellets, not darts. That bugged me. It was all to set the ending and fake out up but I think it could have been done better.

>>81199307
I know there are people out there who will laugh or say I'm full of shit, but Zootopia for all its cuteness and the lively colorful world, is a rather mature story. It feels like it's a story more people from kids to adults should be discussing.

If there's a sequel I'd be happy with the ending just being Judy and Nick having a nice candlelight dinner together where the movie fades as they're about to kiss. Just something that's official.

This really shouldn't matter to me as much as it does that these two get together. I think I'm broken.
>>
His smugness is so relatable because we're all beta males who wish we could be as smooth as Nick.
>>
>>81199735
I think it's relatable because it's all a mask. Sure he's really good at it, and it's likely just a habit and a part of him now, but deep down it's not what he had wanted. He built it up over what he'd lost.

It's another reason I want Nick and Judy together. Judy kind of saved Nicks soul, in a sense. Gave him back what he wanted years ago, just in a different form.
>>
>>81195371

I'm trying to find Nick's tie, but I can't really find anything that has the exact color scheme of it.

I can find a million navy-blue ties with red stripes, but Nick's tie also has blue stripes along the sides of the red stripes, and I'm having trouble finding a tie with that kind of pattern, in the right colors.

The closest one I found did have blue stripes around the sides of the red stripes...but it's two different shades of blue stripes, and one of them is too bright, making it look like a white stripe.

http://i.imgur.com/oe4ySVP.jpg

Should I just get navy with red stripes, and skip the extra blue stripes? You can't really see the blue stripes in the animation unless you look closely, so I figure most people won't care.

It bothered me too. While I thought the story was pretty good for a Disney children's movie, it had way too many coincidences and contrivances in it.
Using a few coincidences here and there in a story is okay, but it's best to avoid them as much as possible. If there's some kind of big mystery, the heroes should be able to solve it without the help of perfectly timed coincidences.
I had a similar problem with Jessica Jones, only there the coincidences generally screwed things up for the heroes, and it got to a point where the heroes were so unlucky it was rididulous
>>
>>81201792
I suppose I like Sunlight City and Prejudice Dies Hard most personally, though neither are very light.

A lot of people like Sadjudy, and I'm liking the sequel so far.

Hood and Hunted are generally lighter fair if you want that.

>>81199530
The plot in Zootopia hinges on a lot of apparent coincidences that really aren't coincidences when you think about it. And most of them point right back to Dawn Bellwether:
>Judy becomes the first rabbit cop in Zootopia, and immediately gets assigned to the high-profile "downtown" unit. She probably owes both of these to Bellwether pushing Mayor Lionheart's "inclusion" policies to the limit.
>Judy nearly gets fired for volunteering to take on the Otterton disappearance case, but Bellwether intervenes and puts Chief Bogo in a position where he has to permit it.
>Judy gets attacked by the savage Manches, which if not for Lionheart's wolves kidnapping him would've exposed the supposed "predators turning savage" epidemic. Clearly Bellwether had her followed by her henchsheep just to set the encounter up.

The whole first 3/4 of the movie is Bellwether using Judy as a pawn to advance her "race war" scheme. From the moment she passed police academy she was being groomed to play the part she ended up playing in her disastrous news conference.

It could very well be a defense mechanism. Nick is a wounded soul with a thick skin protecting it. He drops his defenses with Judy and exposes himself. Judy inadvertantly pokes at the old wound and Nick overreacts as a result. It's very human.

In the very anti-human art world we live in today, I'm amazed a movie like this made it to theaters and am very pleased at how well it has been doing. People crave human stories even if told by funny animals and human stories involve tragedy, humor, and don't always work out perfectly.

I got it right away. It's why they show it's her parents calling.

Newer Pixar films have one or two good scenes that tug at your heartstrings, which make people forget about the rest of the film being dull and bland.

See: Up, Inside Out, Toy Story 3, The Good Dinosaur.
>>
>>81207511
It handled the concept of depression accurately, where it's not just about being sad all the time but rather, feeling nothing. I also liked the message that being sad was healthy and that it's impossible to be happy all the time.

The execution was alright, and it was certainly better than the last few Pixar movies. Zootopia is a much better film in my opinion though.

I do think up is slightly better than the others in that regard.

You have some callbacks later on, the ellie badge scene, looking at the house and it ended out resting in the exact spot it was supposed to from the painting, you've got some character development from carl through the whole thing, it's nice (even if the the middle of the movie is just kind of dumb)

Toy story 3 I felt like I was watching a dreamworks movies at certain points, all the ken doll stuff for example, like where he's doing a fashion show and the funky music is playing.

It was like what, I wasn't expecting this.

Then you have the trash compactor scene that everyone says made them cry and I was just like ok.

I suppose I shouldn't use dreamworks as an insult, HTTYD1/2 are way better than the average pixar movie now.
