After the Badoons kill all of Gamora's people he finds her alive and perceives that since she's the only one of her race to make it out alive that she must be pretty fucking strong so he takes her in and decides to mold her in his image and as his weapon.
Of course Thanos decides that he's going to give her the most normal and positive childhood he can give Gamora because he feels that way she would like him and be even more loyal to him instead of being a cruel master (which I guess is what happens in the GotG movie, look how easily Gamora turns on him while in the comics she always cared for him in some level even when she was against him) eventually he ends up caring for her.
Also according to Starlin who created Thanos, Gamora is the one person in the Galaxy Thanos just genuinely likes.

Yeah, Thanos lost a lot of character recently and got turned into generic villain 2.0 by Hickman which is where a lot of writers are drawing their Thanos from.
Kind of kills me because he used to be such an interesting character, same thing with Gamora she got nerfed really badly thanks to Bendis (and in a way thanks to James Gunn) who has her lose to almost everyone and has her cry about the dumbest shit (even though she's not suppose to be able to cry anymore since Thanos removed her tear duct) and she's also just there to get the shit beaten out of her so that Peter can cry about it and proclaim how brave and strong she is.
