my friends couldn't follow the movie and got confused, I was able to follow the movie no problem, everything that happened made perfect sense within the context of the movie itself.
Still doesn't make the movie good but the points I want to argue about that aren't good are overshadowed by their lack of understanding, it's frustrating.
I think it might be because I'm the only one that reads books for fun so maybe I'm able to follow multiple plots better than they are.

I would argue that the movie wasn't complicated to follow. Some stupid things here and there, but not complicated.
As for the multiple plots, they felt unnecessary but not hard to follow either. i think people just don't want to think.
Maybe it has to do with the fact that "nerds" like us like to think and analyse while reading (which is an active thing in itself compared to the passive act of watching a movie). We like to use our brains. Most people watching those don't like to, at least for those movies.

It's not like the plots were any more complicated than watching an episode of Full House, A-F plots all go off on their own thing and then converge together at the end to make a point or elicit a lesson or moral.
Maybe it was fatigue from length in addition to the disjointed beginning that caused them to veg out in a movie.
The movie did tend to have this sort of faux intelligence about it, like it wanted to be smart but was poor at communicating certain things.

Me too. The deep sea exploration suddenly seeing two glowing eyes is cool and creepy. Him blasting off at the end was cool too. But the whole thing dragged too long. Should have been a very quick glimpse of a human but the camera lingers on him too long to make the whole scene awesome.
I would love for a new movie franchise to start this way, with interconnected movies where crazy unexpected shit happens. I mean we know who Flash is so we can piece things together.
But with a completely new and original IP we would be as in the dark as everyone else, and enjoy every surprise.
