Tonight's twitter amusement comes from Nick Spencer, who has a long thread arguing about how DC's current practices are horrible and Marvel's are amazing (scroll up and down):

https://twitter.com/nickspencer/status/714215659635286017

Highlights include:

>no, sorry, only 1 company. Other is using double ships to subsidize experimentation

>This is chasing the quickest buck.

In lighter Spencer amusement, he also says

https://twitter.com/nickspencer/status/713242297622593536

>If you love a character, that is because of the character's creators, solely. 'The character' is not a real, independent thing that exists.

which proves he has spent 0 time in fandom whatsoever
>>

>>This is chasing the quickest buck.

>'The character' is not a real, independent thing that exists.
I've never read anything from this guy but what a shit writer he must be. Like, I'm not saying go full on whacko and start thinking these fictional characters are real or anything but isn't writer's job to make them as believable and engaging as possible, almost as if they were real?

Yeah, company wars are bullshit and he clearly had a horrible DC experience he's still bitter about, but going THEY double-ship for a quick buck, WE double-ship to subsidize niche books is kind of...blind? Ignoring the $4.99 #1 gouge and the variants stuff.
>>
>>81171942
There was also the whole "relaunch 70 books with an extra dollar on the #1 and everything has five incentive variants minimum"

I mean, if that's not fucking over LCSes to make a quick buck I really don't know what is

I can only guess, though, that he's never run into a fandom that's made a living breathing shared concept of a character that bears little to no resemblance to the source material/even a textual archaeologist can't figure out how you got from here to there. Having been in fandom of some sort for HMM HMMM long, I've seen it over and over again.
>>
We can't cut out the direct market fast enough tbhfam,

>>81171780

he's right though? comics aren't documents of real events. He's totally talking about how fans bitch at creators right

>>81171739

this one is both sides are kinda wrong. and hard numbers DC is and has been doing worse. they didn't reboot everything because Tony Daniel and Grant Morrison had genius comics ideas that needed a blank slate.

and Marvel has some evidence they're double shipping Spider-Man to help maintain Squirrel Girl (or whatever) while DC's most experimental book is like Blue Beetle?
>>
>>81171993
Wasn't there a pic explaining how the hip hop variants worked? Or some other recent variant.
I remember it being incredibly convoluted and felt bad for retailers for having to deal with that

Like they had to buy 25+ issues of one book to get a variant of another book, and it was like that for just about every book or something.
>>
>>81172028
You already had your experimental DC books, they didn't sell, stop bitching about it.
>>
>>81171739
Reminder me that slott was tweeting positive about dc rebirth.
>>
>>81171961
>WE double-ship to subsidize niche books
oh bullshit, double shipping Deadpool and whatever the hell else isn't keeping Moon Girl or Hercules alive longer, it's just pocket lining

that's like saying DC is putting out three Harley Quinn books to keep Omega Men and Midnighter alive, theoretically you can SAY that's what they're doing but obviously fucking not or they wouldn't be cancelling a bunch of things at <8 issues already

it sounds like he's just being a fucking baby because he had a bad experience with DC, this "b-but Marvel is innocent!" is blind as hell
>>
>>81172028
Well, Veritgo is their entire line of semi-experimental comics that mainline subsidizes until trades come out.

Marvel doesn't do MAX anymore, no? They literally don't have any other imprints right now.
>>
>>81171739
>no, sorry, only 1 company. Other is using double ships to subsidize experimentation
Oh lol. The only double shipping that is "experimentation" right now is Rucka's proposed WW, which will use it to tell two complimentary stories apart in time.
>>
>>81172028

i'm trying to say marvel is gaming a broke system while dc is letting it beat them
>>
>>81172028
Depends on how you look at it. Could easily argue that DC already did their good will weird projects and now they're having to double ship to make up for that.

And there's still Gotham Academy, Prez v2, and probably some other low sellers coming.
>>
>>81171961
Yeah it's really absurd. DC pushed unpopular books down the line with underperforming sales a lot longer than Marvel has. What is the average Marvel run now? Six or seven issues?
>>
>>81172062
yeah there was a picture illustrating the draconian variant ordering voodoo LCSes had to go through for ANAD but I don't have it on hand

He's talking about how fans bitch at creators but he seems to think that fandom is a direct derivative of the source material that he and others write, which is not strictly the case. There could never be another comic with Jason Todd in it, and Jason Todd fandom would go on on its own merry way.

Speaking of, haven't seen any speculation on what those two stories are actually going to be about.

Maybe something about mentor Ares in the past with a Veronica Cale plot in the present? And yes, it's probably gonna involve Veronica Cale because, come on, she's Rucka's OC for fucks sake.
>>

like... I'm pretty sure Fanon Tim Drake has never existed in any form in comics, he's a weird amalgamation of comics and other source material and widespread fandom ideas

>>

Year One makes me think they're taking a shot at the illusive definite Wonder Woman story, which is so dependent on fan consensus it may never happen and which is all quite a few writers seem to be trying to do for her recently.
>>

>Wonder Woman comes in June, twice monthly.
>Rucka writing, Liam Sharp and Nicola Scott on art.
>Wonder Woman has a new costume similar to her Dawn of Justice outfit, but more colorful.
>Rucka says there are two stories in the bi-monthly.
>Odd-numbered issues drawn by Liam, shows Diana in the modern DCU: "Wonder Woman: The Lies".
>Even-numbered issues are "Wonder Woman Year One" by Nicola Scott
>It's a project Rucka and Scott have been planning for over a decade.

>No, I’m not going to tell you what the lies are, because then there’d hardly be a point in you reading the book. Suffice it to say, for now, that Diana discovers that some of the facts she’s taken as truth are…brittle under closer examination. She sets off to separate the lies from the truth.

No doubt The Lies and Year One are going to be Rucka retconning Azz stuff left and right

Or what if the JL3K Booster and Ted got sent to Earth 0 and that's why they've not been showing up? Blue Beetles is a sorta continuation of that. Explains why Giffen dropped them so hard in JL3K

>At least when the New 52 hit there were a lot of characters/concepts getting the spotlight, stuff we hadn't seen before/in a while

DC TRIED getting more weird stuff and unusual characters out in the open and THEY DIDN'T SELL! Why is it such a crime to play it safe when being experimental didn't pay off at all?

>>81172587

>>
>>81172459
>I like the idea of using Vertigo to do kind of alt/niche DCU projects again.
Even something like Orlando on a Authority/Stormwatch book from Vertigo would probably sell better than Orlando writing what most would think of as a pseudo-Image book.
Lucifer is one of the worst of the new Vertigo books but it's already established and has a show so it's selling better than the rest of the new books.

I mean that fandom often comes with characterizations for people that don't really have any root in the source material. Lemon Chicken Rodney. Feminist Jason Todd. And then other people read the fic but not the original material, and start adding on and it becomes a self-sustaining organism.

>>
>>81172609
I think that just means Johns and Reis are coming for the collab arc, not that Reis is on the book all the time. That would probably mean he can't do an ongoing though depending on how much it is.
>>
>>81172715
>And then other people read the fic but not the original material, and start adding on and it becomes a self-sustaining organism.
That too, people see their friend post a fic or something and get into it without being into the source material themselves. They might read some stuff but not many people will go through decades worth of comics to find key characterization for characters they like, they just keep building up that stuff on their own with their pals and it keeps spreading that way

There's a segment of people who refuse to even acknowledge this. You can't really argue with them.
>>
>>81172715
But it just gets crazy! Fandom often uses small sections of a character's history to legitimize or establish a take. Sometimes the take is just completely invented. To what extent is a fandom character valid because the original, creator-made character exists?

Comic books are sort of in a unique position in terms of fandom too, if only because the inmates are in charge of the asylum. I think the internet is moving other media more towards the place comics are at and have been at for a while.

There are writers now (and I would say Spencer and Lieber are too of them, along with like Bennett, Leth, etc.) who tap fan-takes or fan-like-takes directly in their work. I agree Spencer's stance is bizarre, but a discussion on this has so many stopping points.
>>
>>81172729
oh that is true, it's easy to forget that when DC's marketshare is like 20% and Marvel's is 40% that doesn't mean jack shit and if you look at CBR's Tilting at Windmills column DC is still the more profitable BOOK publisher by a wide margin

DC is doing worse than Marvel, there's no denying that.

But /co/ just seems to embrace this really narrow perspective of a two-publisher competition instead of looking at the market as a whole.

And, in particular, every DC thread seems to push this narrative that DC is the struggling, barely-surviving underdog who is unfairly losing and that Marvel is cheating somehow.

They literally described Wacky Race Land as Wacky Racers meets Mad Max

>WACKY RACELAND – Take The Ant Hill Mob, Penelope Pitstop and Dick Dastardly, mix in a healthy dose of “Mad Max” and you get this dark and gritty take on Hanna-Barbera’s “Wacky Races,” courtesy of writer Ken Pontac (REBOOT, HAPPY TREE FRIENDS) and artist Leonardo Manco (HELLBLAZER), with vehicle designs by Mark Sexton (MAD MAX: FURY ROAD). A time of hope and innocence with Utopia at the finish line has given way to planetary Armageddon and a desert wasteland full of radioactive lakes, nanotech dust storms, and cannibalistic mutants. Against this backdrop, the Wacky Racers and their sentient vehicles continue their contest, but now the competition is for survival, and there can only be one winner when the checkered flag falls.

http://www.dccomics.com/blog/2016/01/28/hanna-barbera-beyond-flintstones-scooby-and-more-are-getting-comic-book-reimaginings

Also did you see that article stating that Scooby Apocalypse is the predecessor to Wacky Race Land and is what causes the fucked up world? Apparently they're working on a Jetsons comic which is about them time travelling trying to prevent Wacky Race Land

Right, there's two big classes of shipping:

1) predictive shipping that is predicated on being validated in canon/wants to win
2) shipping that doesn't care if it happens or not, people just like it and write about it

when they clash and people aren't clear about what kind they are...
