when something is called edgy (not the internet version the actual term) it typically means 'on the edge' or differing from the norm in some typically severe method. Which is why when a character normally portrayed as kind of cartoonish is made more realistic and 'gritty' people woudl say 'tim burton gave us an edgier batman'.
Teenagers feel the need and desire to be edgy, to be different than the norm, to set themself apart. its a typcial and common kind of thing.
So basically what you have here are a bunch of early twenty somethings who are so fucking desperate to not look like the teenagers they just were and appear to be mature in both their opinion on things and in their personality they cannot stand things being like they were as teenagers.
So edgy is only used for its negative connotation even though it isn't inherently negative. It is one of the many ways the internet and 4chan are absolutely destroying language.

For instance, the setting for Avatar with elemental magic and an evil empire setting would seem super generic on paper, but the superb art direction, the vivid details they put in the setting, the characters, and going out of their way to show that the Fire Nation and its people aren't all bad, are what made it incredible.
