His turn was clearly meeting Yinsen and hearing about the horrors his weapons caused. Like the bit where yinsen tells him about the people hit with his bomb sharpnel they called the walking dead because they were living on borrowed time.
It was clearly because the weapons were getting in the hands of monsters who used them on innocent people, i mean his first act as ironman isn't to protect american soldiers...its to take out a bunch of soldiers in the middle east attacking a small village of innocents ALSO IN THE MIDDLE EAST.
At no point does he ever state it has anything to do with 'america'.
