Ewing has arguably the best grasp on continuity and how to integrate it into his stories than anyone at Marvel. Dude might even be beyond Morrison levels of continuity wank.
That said, he's basically a low-budget Busiek. That's not a bad thing by any means, far better than most of Marvel's current staple of writers, but he's very much a cape-writer. His non-Big 2 stuff isn't nearly as compelling as any of the creator owned books that Remender or Hickman have done.
He's not a better comic writer than Remender or Hickman, but you could make the argument for him being a better cape writer than them.

If that's all you've read of his then you deserve no opinion about the man. His Image work is great. His Fantastic Four/FF, SHIELD, Secret Warriors, and the Ultimate stuff he wrote are also great. Secret Wars sucked but so does every other Marvel event regardless of who writes them. And his Avengers/New Avengers definitely isn't for everyone (I disliked it when I first read it, but after reading it a second time I like it a lot despite the flaws).

It's not all I've read. Both the Manhattan Projects and East of West suffer from exactly the same problem as his grand, overarching lots-of-people-in-this Avengers. The pace slows, the characters get muddled and repetitive, the story gets prolonged and propelled into a bad ending. It's Lost syndrome or, to put it more kindly, Urasawa syndrome. His FF was fantastic though.
Basically - he's a good writer, but he is not a writer with range. He's not the guy who should be allowed to pick any book.
