When Eisenberg was cast as Lex Luthor, there was a huge amount of outrage and hate, but amidst that, there were defenders saying that he could be a pleasant surprise.

Now that we know he was awful, what the fuck were they thinking with that casting?
>>
>>81051379
They wanted to go the Heath Ledger route. Get someone that nobody wanted for the role, and surprise people with their great performance.

It didn't work this time around.
>>
>>81051464
He should have OD then it would have worked
>>
>>81051464
In all seriousness, he comes off as a mocking caricature of fanboyism as chandelled trough Snyder's hatred of his internet critics.

>"You want Bat-Man and Supeman to go punch punch? More punch punch? I give you Doomsday. I give you names of the Justice League. Mmmmm, boys, get it? Because I'm gay, like them trolls that dared diss Snyder."
>>
Why do you even have to ask, are you retarded?

Jessie was cast for something else, but he didn't want it. So they gave him Lex role, so they could pull off a Keaton Batman or Ledger Joker gamble. It was also the most different take on Luthor that's been on screen. And it obviously didn't work.
>>
>>81051543
I mean, he did base his mannerisms on Max Landis, who shit on Man of Steel.

It does seem like the subtext is "Lex Luthor represents all the mean naysayers who don't like my Superman for no reason! That's why he hates Superman for no reason!"
>>
>>81051379
Honestly, I don't know. I gave him the benefit of the doubt, but he is not the best fit for the character they were trying to portray. A more mature and physically imposing would have been a better fit.

For example, that scene with Senator Finch would have been more tense if he towered over her.
>>
The actor was fine.
If he was just Mark Zuckerberg from the Social Network, he'd have been a fine Lex.
Eisenberg can really pull off the guy who truly thinks he's smarter than everyone else in the room.

But the writing was shit and he got turned into a weird flamboyant Christian
>>
>>81051618
>Max Landis
That makes a frightening amount of sense.
>"Max sounds like Lex, get it?"
>>
I don't think the problem lies with the casting or acting, but with the script and directing. He's probably, after Fishburne, the best actor in the film.
>>
>>81052190
MoS had the same problem (but I haven't seen BvS) it had AMAZING oscar worthy actors who just drool out their lines with no emotion of if they have emotion, its overwrought and hamfisted without any cheese to excuse it.
>>
>>81053173
>it had AMAZING oscar worthy actors
Literally who?
The best was Michael Shannon, but he can't be accused of having no emotion
>>
>>81053217
Not that anon, but Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane, Greg Kinnear, and Russell Crowe.
>>
>>81053217
Well basically just him lol
His performance was just awful with really bad dialogue
>>
I don't blame Eisenberg for doing a shit job because, seriously, did you watch the movie? No one could salvage that material. He did what he could within the confines set for him. Snyder and Goyer probably told him "you're a flamboyant, pissy, quirky, nihilistic, crazy billionaire manchild who's also threatening", and Eisenberg tried to parcel out just what the fuck the character was even supposed to be and couldn't get it because NOBODY knew what the character was supposed to be except Snyder and Goyer, who have continuously proven themselves to live on an alternate plane of moon logic.
>>
>>81051547
>It was also the most different take on Luthor that's been on screen

It was just as campy as Spacey and Hackman. It was just shittier.
>>
>>81053306
Everyone keeps forgetting that Goyer was kicked out and Terrio was called in.

Not that it seemed to matter anyway. Fuck.
>>
>>81053334
Goyer's sticky fingerprints can be seen through whatever Terrio layered on.
Scripts are never totally abandoned when new writers come on.
They're just patched up.

I mean Jurassic World still had the "military raptor" thing back from like the 2010 version that had human hybrids.

Blockbuster scripts are too focus tested and too designed to ever by discarded entirely.

Honestly I don't fucking know.

I kept holding out hope that he'd surprise us, that his goofy effeminate bullshit was just an act and the calm, collected, sociopathic Lex was going to be revealed at some point... but it never happened.

Easily the second worst decision of the film's production... the first being Snyder.

It could have been great.

It was good casting, I stand by that. He went the wannabe auteur route though and decided to do his own interpretation of the character, based solely on the previous movies and his own preconceptions of Luthor.

On the other hand you have Affleck, a longtime fan of Batman comics, and Momoa and Miller who have read hundreds of issues to prepare for their roles so far. I'd be surprised if Eisenberg picked up even one comic book. There's this stigma guys like him have against comics that makes them think these characters are all in need of "fixing".

If he had played it simply as a young Luthor it could've been good.
>>
>>81053462
I'm still really glad they didn't listen to the memes and cast Cranston. It would have been like casting Idris Elba as Black Panther or Benedict Cumberpatch as Doctor Strange. oh wait

>>
>>81053306
His characterisation made sense. He was an arrogant would be god that was confronted with a direct sign of his own mediocrity and insignificance. That wouldn't do. That also fits into the angel/demon thing, and why he used his own blood with Doomsday.
>>
Can we all at least agree that his portrayal of Lex was a lot more threatening and interesting than Gene Hackman/Kevin Spacey Lex?

I know everyone wants DCAU Lex more than anything but it's still a step up.

>>
>>81051379

>>
>>81058036
because he was famous for being a rom-com star and playing a gay cowboy.
>>
>>81056622
The senator says something to Lex about him wanting to import kryptonite saying it was a way to be prepared, it was "You could piss in a jar and call it Grandma's tea(or something like that)".
Then when Superman goes to that trial thingy from the trailers, the senator sees a jar with a label "grandma's tea"
She notices Lex is not there anymore, and then the whole thing blows up
>>
personally I thought eisenberg would make a good young lex luthor after watching the facebook movie, he played a good thinks-he's-smarter-then-everyone-else asshole in that. but that would be limited to flash backs and have some other actor play present day lex.

>>
>>81059582

>>
>>81058036
He was mostly known as a romcom pretty boy with goofy movies like The Brothers Grimm and 10 Things I Hate about You on his resume.

Sure, there's stuff like Brokeback and Candy on his resume, but he hadn't yet shaken the mainstream perception of a pretty boy who gets by on his looks.

I can't remember his name now but they should have casted the guy who played Red Mist's dad from Kick ass. That guy would've been able to pull off an older mature Luthor who's already comfortable in his power but has now been thrown a wrinkle. This shit they've got going on right now is balls.

I think many writers try too hard to give Luthor motivations for hating Superman, like philosophy or xenophobia, when really all you need is that Superman stands in Luthor's way
>>
>>81063703
That's a very good question. You'd hink they'd try and at least be faithful to the iconography of Luthor. If there's one thing the general population knows about Luthor, it's that he's bald.
>>
>>81060056
It always should have been Bryan Cranston.
>>
>>81063703
Gene probably didn't want to cut his hair for a comic book movie, which wasn't as big of a deal back then.

Spacey actually was bald.

Luthor apparently loses his hair in the end, so of course they have to give him the hippie look to make the reveal more dramatic.

This guy gets it.

Snyder flat-out can't direct and he especially can't direct actors. Actors who have won awards and critical recognition in other films consistently suck in Zack Snyder films. It couldn't be more fucking obvious that the real problem is with this man right here by this late point. You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear and sure, some are a bit more or a bit less shitty in his films, but fuck, not by much. The man is just flat out incompetent.

>>
>>81065698
Are we talking about the movie Lex or comic book Lex? Cause to me it seems like people are shitting on the actors for not being the comic book characters. The thing is, BvS is a new take on the characters and it's written the way it's written. Is it solely Eisenberg's fault that his character is written so different from the comics? Or is it Affleck's fault that Batman uses guns or whatever? The characters are what they are, and the actors did a really good job in my opinion.
>>
>>81065810
Maybe but look it doesn't fucking matter. This is too much of a shitpile to bother to nitpick casting. Without any foundation the building falls down anyway. I wish someday writing and directing would be one of the first few thousand priorities films are given but it's not going to happen. they're always the very last.

Yes, the movie was dog-shit, but Brolin was a good choice for that role

There's a difference though. Before the modern take on Loki (and we won't really get into the convoluted way it's not even really the "same" Loki), Loki was always a mildly comedic, psychopathic, classic super villain.

Lex long ago shed that image. Savvy, established businessman/politician Lex masking an inner narcissism that leads to self destruction is how most people see Lex. Going from that to daddy issue meme spouter is far more jarring than a younger Loki going the same way. Also important, is that Loki got fangirl cred in the movies first, where he really only had the daddy issues, before he became a memester in the comics to play to that crowd more.

>Can we all at least agree that his portrayal of Lex was a lot more threatening and interesting than Gene Hackman/Kevin Spacey Lex?

No, Spacey could have pulled Lex off given a bit better material https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaCu2C3234c

Probably on the same level as "Flash TV show will never do time travel" guy

Wait, wow. Someone said this?

Wow, I didn't remember this. I don't get why Hollywood likes to show such physicial abuse in kids movies. No wonder bullying is so common in America

No, Kevin Spacey shits all over this Lex. When he was screaming at Superman on the rooftop about how God is evil and man must bring him down I expected him to end it by talking about how euphoric he was.

I'd SUBMIT to that casting.

Literally the only thing I remembered about this scene was "Krrrryptonite!"

Yes, but it was in that horrible Simpsons ep where Homer is Kurt Cobain

Memes aside this /tv/ drone is right.

Eisenberg does okay at best in his films with Stewart.
He killed his performance as Zuckerberg because he pretty much is Zuckerberg down to their personality.
His chemistry with Garfield probably helped that as well.

We all know who would've been a better Luthor. Unfortunately he was busy being cast in a superior role

Holy shit. I gotta say you can say what you will about Superman Returns but Singer knows how to film a goddamn scene.

Could you imagine if snyder was at the helm on that moment. It'd look like it was filmed by a camera thrown into a tumble dryer with a bunch of bubble wrap.

I hated the casting. Was so upset when I first heard.
But this is prime silver age wacky Lex, except instead of tubby he's tiny.
Loved him in the movie.

Oh my god. It's true.

I don't get it, and my Google-fu is lacking.
