>"I feel like he’s right. But I feel like Batman and Superman are transcendent of superhero movies in a way, because they’re Batman and Superman. They’re not just, like, the flavour of the week Ant-Man – not to be mean, but whatever it is. What is the next Blank-Man?"

>"Really, Thor? Thor, has a movie? Like, really. I mean, come on - and there is no Superman movie? The world's out of balance. It's like we've lost our minds here, people. Come on."

>Snyder was mystified when someone told him that they couldn’t think of a movie in recent memory that’s had as much collateral damage as MAN OF STEEL "I went, really? And I said, well, what about STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS?" the director says. "In ‘Star Wars’ they destroy five planets with billions of people on them. That’s gotta be one of the highest death toll movies in history, the new ‘Star Wars’ movie, if you just do the math."

>"It's Superman," Zack Snyder said in the latest issue of SFX Magazine. "If you get that right, that's the question you'll be asking everyone else. That should be the question you are asking Iron Man and Thor. How is it you can feel you can be making a superhero movie in a world where Superman and Batman exist?"

Zack needs to stop throwing shade at the competition. It's got a Monkey's Paw effect.

What a pleb.

>In ‘Star Wars’ they destroy five planets with billions of people on them. That’s gotta be one of the highest death toll movies in history, the new ‘Star Wars’ movie, if you just do the math.

Yeah, and in those movies, it was THE FUCKING VILLAINS that destroyed those planets, not THE FUCKING HEROES.

God, Snyder is a fucking idiot. Who the fuck let someone who hates heroism (and Superman in particular) make this movie?

Between this and the Star Wars comment and the "hurr why is there a Thor movie being made" I'm starting to think this guy is a completely idiot

Superman still has to bear some blame for Metropolis - not to mention the annihilation of Smallville.
>>

Are you insane? How is it an equivalent? Did Finn and Rey pull the trigger? Did their lightsaber battle with Ren become so big it involved the deaths of those planets? They blew up because it is a BAD thing that the VILLAINS did to indicate that they were evil fuckers.

> sees Zod on a secluded farm

>How is the Star Wars comment not valid?

Part of it has to do with the scale of destruction - an entire city vs an entire planet - but it has more to do with the fact that some of the destruction in MoS wasn't inevitable (see: Smallville, Metropolis during the Superman/Zod fight) and didn't fit in thematically with the "ideal" image of Superman.

He was simply referencing the destruction porn. All movies have it.
>>
>>81050914

Not really. A good chunk of Smallville was destroyed by the fight between Superman and Zod's soldiers. God knows how many people died thanks to all the ricocheting bullets and property damage and explosions. A little hyperbolic, sure, but "annihilation" isn't exactly a stretch.
>>

He's right in that Supes deserves an epic film.

He's just not the person capable of doing so.
>>
>>81050941
The military probably killed more people in smallville than the kryptonians
>>
>>81050938

Yes, and in many cases, the destruction is important to the narrative or the theme of the film. The destruction in MoS's two major battles wasn't important to the narrative and they generally didn't lend any weight to the film's overarching themes.
>>
>>81050938
Planet blowing up is more abstract than literal 9/11 destructoporn imagery.

No it fucking doesn't.
Comparing BvS (made by the retards that made MoS, that have gone to interviews defending a movie they themselves don't seem to understand) to The Thing (one of the greatest horror movies of all time) is an insult to both John Carpenter's masterpiece and most of the critics at the time which later retracted their stand on it because they recognized an error made during an era where everyone was burned out on horror and horrific things due to nuclear woe.
>>
>>81051156
What your excuse for not paying attention to the movie?
>>
>>81050988
>And the military wouldn't have been in Smallville if Superman hadn't dragged Zod into town.
Which again he did by accident, he was not looking were he was going while he was flying with Zod.
He had to get them away from Martha. Period.
There is no fucking way he could possible fight 3 Kryptonians with his mother standing right by them. If he grabbed her instead and tried to take her elsewhere too fast he would break her bones from the velocity, so he had to move THEM.
>>
>>81051192
The point still stands that critics can't recognize a good movie if it bit them in the face.

Just watched Man (of) Slaughter yesterday.

I'm not really quite sure why Supes was a little beta bitch who was afraid to reveal his powers.

I mean there was a time where he was Superboy, you know, a boy who saves the day with his powers.

Also why couldn't he fight Zod somewhere else besides the middle of the city? Just fly somewhere else where nobody will get hurt dummy.

Secondly I think Lois Lane knows Clark's secret identity, which ruins it for me.
>>
Zack doesn't like Superman.
All he really wants to do is make Batman films.
So he made a Batman film with Superman.
And now he made Batman v. Batman.

There's a fundamental disconnect here.
All he wants Superman to be is another brooding asshole.
Don't get me wrong. It's okay to make a dark Superman story, there's a large plethora of things you can do with him... as long as he's Superman.
His Superman barely stands for anything. Fuck, does he even smile once in BvS? Was the only instruction given to Cavill: "Act like a goddamn robot!"

Seriously, if they don't take Snyder off of JLA, we'll get Batman and the Batman league.

>Also why couldn't he fight Zod somewhere else besides the middle of the city? Just fly somewhere else where nobody will get hurt dummy.
See videos here.
In the first one, Zod states he intends to kill them all one by one just to spite Clark so if Clark up and leaves Zod ain't gonna fallow like a DBZ villain, he is gonna start slaughtering civilians directly.
In the 3rd when he lets loose with the full power punches high above the city he takes Zod to the edge of down town before the general swerved back in.

>>81051738

>>81050688
He's right in praising the characters; they really are that iconic and transcendent. As someone who loved (and still loves) MoS, it's too bad BvS basically puts on display that he's completely incapable of making a movie.
It's so indefensible. I used to say that Zack was a great visual director, but it's obvious now that while he does still make good looking visuals, the pacing and editing problems in his movies are brought in with his own hands.
I just really hope this cast still stays even if Snyder leaves. Affleck and Cavill did great in this movie.
>>
>>81051886
That was the entire point, to tell Clark the true nature of the world instead of selling him bright fantasy tales of hope that mostly doesn't exist.
>>
He has good intentions, just not the talent to fulfill his ambitions, and he gets those characters far less than he thinks he does.
>>
>>81051782
I hate supesfags like this. The guy who thinks Suoerman should be some two dimensional secular christ, the suoerman who might as well not even be human because he's so pure and good. You're not helping the character by keeping him in a box.

Affleck WANTS to be Batman.

And he'll probably fight the studio and Snyder not only to stay on board but also to make a better product.

There's this rumor going around that he basically took over production in BvS when it came to the Batman-centric scenes. And those are the only ones most critics actually have positive words for.

People kept bitching about Batffleck. But they got it the wrong way around. As Martin Thomas said in his review: "He's the one who's too good for this."

>>
>>81051993
As opposed to making him a one dimensional, cold fish?

Have you seen BvS?
He doesn't have emotions in that movie.
None.
He's not human and flawed, he's not saintly, he's just bland.

There are a few things Superman is supposed to stand for, whether it's a realistic or an idealistic story. Otherwise it makes no sense having him be Superman to begin with.
If he isn't the ideal of man, a symbol of hope, he should be working towards that and if not that he should be questioning himself about why he isn't.
Every Superman story ever told has an angle like that.

And you shut the fuck up about the Christ shit, because Snyder overuses that symbolism to a retarded degree. But it's basically meaningless. Just "cool" imagery, because there's no subtext to back it up.

Is Snyder the real-life Batmite who decided to do his best to cancel the DCCU, or is he the Gentry, hellbent on transforming the ideas of Superman, other characters and what they stand for into abomination6?
>>
>>81051169
>Snyder defenders
Snyder always tries, but ultimately fails, at conveying any short of message in an interesting or even functional way.
In all of his movies.

Look, I'm a DC fan. I want DC to start doing movies. They have this ridiculous backlog of Super Hero stories that are more than just punches from the punch dimension.

But they need a director that isn't a utter moron. Warner has them by the bunches on their payroll. Instead of making yourself look like a utter fool defending the vision of a guy who made "Sucker Punch", you could join the camp that actually wishes these movie to be good by putting a non-shit director at the helm.
>>
>>81053301
No.
Have you learned nothing from Ultra Comics?
The Gentry are the people discussing MoS and any Snyder movie years later.
It's pointless, doesn't change anything and erodes your free time with some dumb shit that was already decided.

Gentry real evil is the small, invisible cancer that slowly but surely will kill you in the long run.

Hell, forget the shape of the truck itself. Snyder went out of his way to make sure the flammable liquid warning on the truck was SUPER visible to everyone, including Superman as two of those conspicuous ass logos are right in front of Superman as the truck starts sliding towards him, and he still just casually floats by that shit like it's nothing.

There's not even that supposed looking back in shock and horror at the mistake he made, they don't show his facial expression at all. Honestly comes off more as him looking back to make sure the building isn't about to fall on him.

>>81055654

Watchmen was a shallow interpretation of a tightly-written graphic novel. There were some good performances, but ultimately they movie stumbled a bit when straying from the original events / dialogue.

Harping over the "no fun" comments is worthless - it's certainly not impossible to make a serious superhero film that the critics love (e.g. Winter Soldier, Nolan Batman trilogy). But Snyder has a nasty habit of presenting a story as meaningful and deep, when it's really a shallow pretentious puddle of half-baked concepts.

Remember how Sucker Punch was supposed to be a female empowerment movie? The same problems are present within Man of Steel. He spends so much time propping Superman up as an idealistic messiah figure that he completely forgets to give him an actual character. There's a conscious effort to steer him away from the optimistic, big blue Boy Scout persona (which is "too boring"), but instead they've looped around to making him sterile, emotionless, and completely fucking unrelateable.

For what it's worth, a lot of this shit can be blamed on Goyer as well.
>>
Everyone knows the movie will make bank, because of who's in it. That's part of why the backlash is so hard. People expected better than what they got.

You know I was reading 2 issues of Action comics. 845 and 846. One having a fight with Bizarro and another a fight with Zod and other kryptonians.
Cool issues by Geoff Johns and Richard Donner.

So as i'm reading this i notice theres alot of shit getting wrecked. buildings being ripped open and knocked to pieces, buses flying, the daily planet globe being knocked off the roof. And i was wondering why the destruction in it didn't feel like the destruction in man of steels ending. It then occurred to me to reread the fight and see what was different. My assumption was it'd be that less was destroyed in the issue, but that wasn't really it. I think the big issue isn't that a ton of shit gets destroyed in the snyder supe films. it's that he just doesn't give a shit about any of it.

The focus of the camera is always telling you 'LOOK HOW COOL THIS FIGHT IS ISN'T IT BAD ASS'. Whereas the comic continually swapped between the action between superman and bizarro or zod, but also the damage and more importantly how it put people in peril. Lois lane reeling as a bus nearly falls on her. Citizens halting to avoid falling as a staircase below them just collapses due to a buildings wall being knocked in. People hurling themselves out of the way as a taxi cab collides out of the air with a sidewalk (hillariously knocking a fire hydrant into the air and dragging a poor little doggy tether to it by leash up with the thing).
And sure you have a few more moments in these two issues of Superman trying to save people rather than just punch the bad guy. but even beside that the damage is framed in a personal way whereas i think the issue in the movie is that its just shit in the background. Like oh look some building over there got destroyed oh well, look how fucking cool this fight is though.
>>
>>81056020

If I had to guess, I would say that this movie will make bank the opening weekend, but likely the domestic gross will drop off quickly if the word of mouth is poor. I haven't seen it so I can't say, but it seems like the rewatchability is fairly low. I do think it will do aces in foreign markets, since effects-driven movies tend to be pretty popular.

However, if this film is a box-office dud, /co/ will explode. And t will be exponentially worse if WB decides to cancel/modify the upcoming DCEU movies as a result.

Yep. It's really disappointing. I feel like everything MoS did really well, Snyder didn't carry over to BvS. Even in terms of the fights, which were the one thing I expected BvS to get right for sure. Without any spoilers, it's really disappointing to see Snyder go from hyper concerned about showing the damages upon god like beings fighting to hilariously MCU-ing his way out of it all. Visually, they were also not even near MoS' frantic-yet-powerful feeling fights either. I watched Superman vs. Zod after I got home from BvS, and it's ridiculous how much better it was than what I watched in theaters.
That's not even going into the fact that Zod was an actually proper villain for Superman, and MoS had some amazing Kryptonian lore, that Platonic allegory, and the absurdist nature of that story. MoS had a clear battle: a god with a singular purpose vs. a god who'd been exposed to the crushing responsibility of choice and morality. Doomsday in BvS is a straight up slap in the face to that kind of theming. Just a generic Brute with about as much logical opposition as Nam-Ek from MoS.
It's crushingly disappointing. And a depressing statement: the problems I had with MoS were probably not due to Goyer. It really was Snyder's hand that tainted it all along.
>>81055618
I think there was 1000+ vote poll on /co/ where just over half of the votes were in favor of MoS. I'm not saying that's an overwhelming majority or something, but that a large subset of this board does enjoy it. And I think after BvS comes out there are going to be some people who reevaluate MoS as well.
