S04/05 was basically "best buddies since forever" kind of thing. That's not a logical step at all. It was more of a "revealing they had a past" than "slowly becoming friends", like in Sky Witch. Bubblegum had a very good relationship with marceline for some time, as implied by that episode. By that time, shippers were already shoving it down our throats the bubbline shit.
