Comic Book route is the only possible way it can go. They'd never be able to get the animation back to how it is, they'd have to get the whole team back on board for it to be the same, and that's not possible after everyone has already split ways, and who knows how long it'd be before they decided to do it.

It is interesting. I also watched the finale late and really enjoyed it, and I've seen quite a few people who did the same thing and felt the same way. There are (many) flaws, sure, but overall it was well executed. I can't think of many better finales, but I can think of many, many worse.
