I like to think Pearl was either a White because of her prismatic colors, or her lack of a single color was due to her being a defective throwaway who never served a specific diamond.

So, I was doing some pictures of what I thought fusions of Opal with Ruby or Sapphire would look like. Dragon's Breath was finished yesterday, being posted on New Fag's thread (who is now a full-fledged Anon), and just this afternoon I got Black Lightning done. The colors are kinda off, but I can blame that on the scanner, at least. All my stuff looks better in person than onscreen, sadly.

Well, my main thought was that Ruby and Sapphire aren't very powerful Gems in the first place, and even when they're Garnet, they normally don't have a huge influence on the fusion in terms of behavior, and even the fusion's looks are typically more in favor of the other components of the fusion. For Dragon's Breath, I figured to incorporate Ruby's ferocity more than anything else, and make a similarly brutal weapon when incorporating her gauntlet. Sapphire, being so calm and steady already, would just add more of what Opal already has, and let her focus even more on something, hence the pair of daikyuus and having multiple arrows.
Besides, the stones are both a different kind of opal (and therefore a different Opal) anyway.

Prime Pearl is the same as our current Pearl.
The problem is that everyone else got better, not that she got worse.
In the flashback, the ONLY gem with a weapon during the whole scenario was Pearl. It could very well be that, like different Gem fusion, weapon summoning was something they didn't know about that was discovered in the war.
Hell, the giant Ruby, whom we know would have had her weapon be a giant boxing glove, never tried to pull it out when trying to punch Rose.

Considering they at least had interstellar, if not intergalactic travel by the time they came to Earth, not having the technology to make swords and such is kind of preposterous. I think it's more of a cultural thing, especially considering how they seem to operate in castes. Weaponry was likely a privilege (and probably still is) reserved for those of a certain minimum social standing. The giant Ruby didn't summon a glove at the time because she, as a lowly corundum (for whatever sense that makes), wasn't allowed to use weapons. The reason our Ruby uses a gauntlet like that is because all she's ever known throughout her career as a guard is to punch things, and therefore a weapon that fits her fighting style (punching and kicking) would be the best thing she could come up with. I honestly view it that corundums (nor Pearls) were permitted to use weaponry, much like how in real life, knights, lords, and royalty were the only ones allowed to wield swords.

Ah, I see. Yeah, there's no way that the only people who had weapons by then were Pearl and her ladyfriend, and everyone else was solely hand-to-hand. Hell, the Diamonds are depicted with weapons of their own in the ancient Gem architecture on Earth (which was there long before the rebellion). Yellow Diamond's statues even show her with a fucking zweihander.
On a semi-related note, I got Yellow Diamond/Pizzazz's lineart done, moving on to Lapis/Stormer.

I'm not entirely sure, really. I'm still kind of a noob with the medium I'm trying to use (markers and brush pens), and my scanner's kinda crappy, so that just makes the colors even worse than they already are. Steven Universe has a lot of really pastel colors, and you can't quite get a lot of them right with markers (too bold), so I have to use a white pencil to lighten stuff, which also mutes it. After THAT, I usually have to balance it and at least smooth out the pencil's texture with a blending pencil on top of all that. I'm relatively new to using ink to this degree (I used to solely use it for lineart), and a couple of months isn't long enough to get truly good at it.

To be honest, I really think I just need to save up and get a better computer, and a drawing tablet. Enough practice with that (practice is the only reason I'm as good at drawing as I am, it's not any particular talent for art), and a lot of my coloring issues can be solved.
