You're not getting this.
The idea is that they HAD to make him like he wasn't a straight up villain. This has nothing to do with degree of menace. This has to do with making you question whether he truly IS a villain. That's what lets you think maybe he can be converted within the movie hew as introduced without having to go the longer route with Vader, who himself himself only started showing signs at the end of ESB and his villainy was starting to crack around the edges at several points in ROTJ. But that's how you treat someone who is established as a true villain. Kylo Ren was set up as a kind of Schrödinger's villain by the mid movie where he might or might not be a true villain depending on how much sympathy you feel or how unstable you feel he is. This is, at least, what was attempted to make Han's try at redeeming Ben make sense. It/s why he didn't just keep his mask on the entire movie as some anon's wish they did. He had to be revealed as human, appear vulnerable. You had to see him react as Rey pushed his button about Vader after turning his own mind link against him, etc etc
I really like the TFA saber duels. There was a certain weightiness to them and there was a better impression that the combatants were aiming to kill, as opposed to say, prequel dancing and "Old man and crippled cyborg awkwardly shuffle about".I still love all the OT and PT duels. I agree with your point, just not with your wording. To me, it wasn't a question of whether he would become a villain of a hero. He was clearly a villain. It wasn't like when Luke was getting seduced; it was like an Anakin post-Episode III; he had already fallen. I felt he had more similarities with Vader in Jedi, in the brisk of coming back. Not really. I mean in the duel between Maul, Obi-wan, and Qui-gon, the first portion just feels incredibly floaty. It's only when Obi-wan and Maul are going at it alone that they feel like they're going for kill strikes for most of the swings.
I rather liked the Duel between Anakin and Obi-wan because it was at least consistently fast enough, whereas whenever Dooku's onscreen there's some conspicuously slow movements, or when Sidious has his duel although I don't really mind that one just because it's funny.

Well I don't think it's a matter of being both a villain and a hero at the same time since Kylo Ren didn't do anything heroic. It was more about being a villain, because he most certain did villainous things, while at the same time seeming like someone who was merely duped. It's the duality that's important. The closest he came to revealing a better nature was mentioning his continuing struggle against the Light within him. This set him up as someone whose heart just wasn't in it, whose good side couldn't be said to be dead as you could about Vader pre-ESB's revelation to Luke.
They built on this with the notion that he was corrupted, seduced. That this isn't who Ben truly is, or who he truly wants to be inside.
The interesting thing is what did he really mean on the bridge when talking to Han? Was he really wavering and about to join them? Did the sun being snuffed out, covering them both in shadow seem like a sign to him that he had to remain in darkness?
I'm not sure. I never read the script, but it has some insights like it does say that he believes Han when told that Snoke is using him for his power and will ultimately destroy him when his usefulness is over.
Whether that tidbit is canon or not, I've got no clue. I haven't read the novelization either to see if they even carried it into the book.

Vader was corrupted by Sidious and the Dark Side twisted everything up inside him, inverted the man he was into a monster, but even redeeming at the end didn't erase what he'd done. Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny. Even after saving his son and killing the Emperor Anakins' legacy as Vader lives on still, now worshiped by Kylo Ren if not the rest of the Knights of Ren and the First Order itself.

Sith are full of hate, anger, and greed. He can't let himself die. The fires burning in him are hotter than what happened to him on Mustafar and wouldn't let him die then. He's a broken man, but Obi-Wan was wrong in saying he's more machine. A mere machine cannot feel the way he does.
In order to die he'd have to be able to let go, shut down who he is inside, and he can't. So yeah despite the damage to his suit the big reason he died on the Death Star is that he was finally willing to let himself go. Which, coincidentally yet totally not, is one of the key steps in becoming a Force Ghost. Acceptance and letting go. There's more to it than that but it's a big one and the real reason the Sith can never do it. They will cling desperately to their lives, clawing for every last second even as they die.

Wait a minute so Ben actually didn't go join Luke's Jedi academy? I think I have an idea of what happened between Snoke and Ben. I think Leia kind of felt he had the force in him, but for whatever reason instead of sending Ben to Luke's academy she sent him to train as a prince with Snoke. You know, the kind of life the children of royalty live. Learning how to be polite, how to talk to politicians, how to have fancy dinner parties and whatnot. If they're going to show her training with Luke on a planet that's brimming with water I want at least one scene where she's nervous about the ocean because she doesn't know how to swim but she's still in awe of it. I kinda felt it the opposite direction. When he lost everything, he essentially just became a more exaggerated and brutal version of the Jedi. No possessions, no attachments. He almost literally had nothing other than what he kept on him. Then he finds out he has a son. And thus, the more Sith like urges spark in him. He starts to desire power. Power other than the Force. Power over any and all, and all for himself instead of for the sake of order.
