How do you feel about this masterpiece?

It would have been better if they just didn't bother with Hans at all and instead used the time wasted on him to further explore the sisterly bond between Elsa and Anna.

It somehow resonated with me more than any animation in a long time, pulled me into a fandom, made me a shipper etc. for the first time in my life. I think there's something special about the world and the character dynamics, and the insane worldwide success implies the same dynamics and struggles appeal to a lot of other people, too. Each of the characters have their own kind of pain, their own motivation for the mistakes they make, I like that. For some reason I really liked Hans, he's the most realistic Disney villain I've seen in a long time (apart from the hammy villain monologue twist) and I think he's a big reason for me liking the film so much.

However, it's a shame the movie ended up being so rushed; the animation looks really dodgy in some places, the writing has a lot of plot holes and clunkiness, some of the songs are downright awful and don't fit the mood of the film, (the only ones I really liked are the ice cutting song in the beginning and the choir piece at the coronation, I would have liked to have more nordic themes in the music). I also feel the setting and the characters had a lot of potential the movie wasted with the hamfisted writing.

I sort of hope Frozen II will be a bit better since they should have enough time to hone the writing and animate it properly.

If Frozen is ever one day 10-20 years from now considered a masterpiece and not a Cars-tier level of nothing but marketing with only the most easily serviceable of stories, I'll eat my shit.

PoTF, Tangled, even Zootopia deserves to be considered more of a masterpiece than Frozen

>and not a Cars-tier level of nothing but marketing
The marketing came after the success. Frozen isn't like Minions, that was marketed like crazy pre-release, it got about the same amount of pre-hype than Patf or WiR or maybe Tangled. Disney was caught completely by surprise by the insane demand for Frozen merch and struggled to meet the ravenous demand.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/hard-get-frozen-merchandise-going-696227
>Hard-to-Get 'Frozen' Merchandise Going for Thousands on eBay
>Now Frozen-themed merchandise has become so scarce that parents are going to great lengths to get their hands on the gear the film's pint-size film fans crave, including staying up until 3 a.m. to buy a Princess Elsa dress, some of which are now going for $1,500 each on eBay.
>Maternity wear designer Rosie Pope also told the New York Post that a friend, who works for Disney, spent $1,200 for an Elsa doll on eBay after promising her daughter one for her Frozen-themed birthday party.

>"By this point, she didn't care about the price," Pope told The Post. "She didn't want to disappoint her daughter."

>Another mom snagged an Olaf doll from the Disney store in Venice, Italy, on a recent business trip, but she's now wary of letting the doll leave the house because of the frenzy caused by her son displaying it in public.

>"Anywhere I was, at the Met, at the supermarket, all the mothers were going crazy screaming, 'Oh my God, I can't believe you got it!' " the woman told The Post. "They were asking me if they could borrow the doll for a few days … I feel like I had a bag no one else could get."
>A Disney spokesperson said the massive popularity of Frozen items was a case of demand exceeding expectations.

http://www.cbc.ca/newsblogs/yourcommunity/2014/04/disneys-frozen-merchandise-shortage-creates-mob-of-angry-parents.html

>Parents everywhere are reportedly in a mad frenzy trying to track down toys and merchandise from the movie, which recently become the highest grossing animated film of all time.

>Whether they're on a quest for Easter gifts, birthday presents or even already prepping for Christmas 2014, frustration is running high among parents who can't seem to get their hands on the elusive "Elsa Dress" among other items.

>According to customer complaints (backed up by online shop listings,) Walmart, Target, Toys R Us and even the Disney store itself have been sold out of nearly every piece of Frozen merchandise since the line launched, despite aggressive restocking efforts.

>Hundreds have turned to the Disney Store's Facebook page with their complaints, writing long and emotional pleas for more Frozen merchandise to be stocked.

>"I have been staying up late every night checking the site. I didn't think the site would refresh during the day. SO irritated!"

I thought it was, like, the definition of "okay" when I saw a stream of it before the hype really got insane.

It doesn't deserve being treated like either a masterpiece or a total shitshow, which seem to be the only reactions most have toward it these days. It's just adequate, and probably the weakest of the most recent Disney movies.

The same applies to Cars as well dude. It's not like anybody knew shit about the movie other than "that new Pixar film and Larry the Cable Guy is in it". Cars got all this merchandising out the ass from a sort-of okay movie just like Frozen, because the film resonated with a very specific age group just like Frozen, got a small spinoff animation just like Frozen and has a sequel because the film did gangbusters in merchandise that not making a sequel would basically be losing money just like fucking Frozen

You think it was a mistake that Disney made Princess Anna a redhead as well? Me too. She looks terrible, unrealistic, & a freak of nature (not that redheads are/n't freaks, but the only prominent Disney redhead I can think of is Merida but she's Pixar & her film sucks).

Image attached to post is of a statue of Anna in a Disney Store with what I believe her hair should look like. It's a yellow blonde, a honey or strawberry blonde, but a very saturated color. Adding color to a character doesn't mean making their hair red!

When Frozen was first released, Disney had a significant amount of Kristoff merchandise available thinking that all little girls wanted Anna to not be alone & little boys would think he's cool.

Turns out Kristoff's boring as deer poop personality made him not a hero to boys & Anna was the Ken doll to Elsa.

Art style was butt-ugly outside of promo shots.
How did Disney get away with it?
>>
>>80985339
You don't see any other mermaids with unnatural hair colors. Ariel's sisters ranged from platinum blonde to raven black. Disney could have had pink- or green-haired merfolk, but that didn't happen.
>>
>>80985462
Because it would have been distracting from a visual perspective. It doesn't mean that it is impossible for merfolk to have Ariel's colors.
>>
>>80985490
Not if every merperson had colorful hair it wouldn't have.

Disney's mermaids are clearly top-half human, bottom-half fish; no frills or fins on the human half, no hairs or toenails on the fish half.

Did you see anyone else in the film with vibrant hair? Anyone else with similar red to Ariel?

>Not if every merperson had colorful hair it wouldn't have.
...what?

Making a character different from the norm is an immediate and easy way to set them apart from everyone else. That is standard character design. If everyone had strong or unique hair colors then no one would because it'd be this blurry, if pretty rainbow.

Ariel's hair is unique but there is nothing in the film to suggest that it is artificial. You're reading way too much into this because you're embarrassed you forgot about Ariel.

>>
>>80985707
No, I did not forget about Ariel. She's just not an authentic redhead.

You are correct about coloration though- to make a character stand out from the crowd, they need to look notably different. It can suggest that the character is intentionally trying to break the mold such as having an abnormal appearance.

Likewise, there is nothing in the film to suggest that Ariel's hair is a natural color either.

>>
>>80985695
>How did Anna get so fucked up by a stray ice bolt from Elsa? Wouldn't it just, I don't know, make her head cold or something?
Same reason Elsa's ice magic hitting Anna in the heart affects her to the point of freezing over. It would've frozen Anna's brain (if it weren't for the trolls) same as her body got frozen later on.
>Why did the rock trolls make Anna forget Elsa had magic powers? Was there really no better way?
Because plot convenience. Or the trolls thought it'd be better for Anna to forget Elsa having powers so they wouldn't end up playing together with her powers again and risk Anna being hurt again, take your pick.
>Was Elsa just locked in her room for 10 years? Seems kinda cruel.
IIRC, she's shown out of her room as a teenager when talking to her parents before they leave, so presumably she was allowed out of her room but not the castle.
>>

>>
>>80986094

oh and i added once more.

maybe we can see teenage elsa in frozen 2 since kid elsa is already confirmed in frozen 2.
>>
>>80979279
The first half of the movie is my favorite half of any Disney movie ever. Unfortunately, everything goes downhill after Let it Go. I think they could've fixed this if Kristoff was replaced with Olaf entirely and if they made the Hans' reveal a little less over-the-top.
>>
>>80979279
The twist was bad because we had every reason to believe the bad guy was good. We saw him be a good ruler and a compassionate person while the princesses were gone. His reveal didn't just seem out of character fo someone so smart but also too evil for someone so good. He could have been a bad pick for Anna without revealing himself and acting the way he did.

The romance with the other guy Anna had just met didn't seem like it was supposed to happen. I didn't pick up any chemistry or sexual tension, they just seemed like friends until the trolls remind us that he's supposedly more gross than he looks and oh yeah he's perfect for Anna.

Other than that it was alright.
>>
>>80985695
>If Else's gloves prevented her from using her powers why could she still freeze the water on the lake when running away? Wouldn't her shoes prevent that?
Because Elsa can shoot ice magic out of her hands but not her feet. Her gloves stop her from shooting around her ice powers, but her feet still affect her environment with her ice powers because they're not as extreme about it (so just water freezing).
>Why didn't the sisters mourn their parents' death? Did they just not know or what?
They did know about their death, you see their portraits being covered, their headstones, and Anna wearing black at the end of the "Do You Want to Build a Snowman" song. So presumably they mourned.
>Why did Kristoff's deer/elk/whatever act like a dog?
Same reason Maximus from Tangled acted like a dog despite being a horse. It's comic relief.
>isn't the whole "Elsa unfreezes Anna through the power of love" thing kinda cliche? Like REALLY cliche?
It's Disney, the power of love cliche is their shtick.
>If Kristoff was raised by rock trolls, ignoring how big of a coincidence that is, why was he seen with humans in the intro song?
It looks like in the intro song he's just tagging along with the ice harvesters and they don't really take notice of him, and it's shown he leaves them and ends up with the rock trolls around the time Anna and Elsa's parents show up for their help.
>Why did the boat float to the top of the water after the lake unfroze? It was already underwater, not sure how more water would help.
Presumably so the boat could be conveniently under them and Anna, Elsa, and co wouldn't just fall right into the lake.
>Why the fuck is Let it go so fucking popular? It's not even that good a song? It's by far the best song in the movie but that's not saying too much considering how lackluster the soundtrack was.
Because it's catchy and it was sung by Idina Menzel. Also the lyrics about deciding not to give a fuck about what people think of you resonated with some people.

I hate that song so very, very much.
>>
>>80985695
>>How did Anna get so fucked up by a stray ice bolt from Elsa? Wouldn't it just, I don't know, make her head cold or something?
It's magic. Even if it were just a physical bolt of ice, she knocked Anna out with a blow to the head. At bare minimum that's a bad concussion, made even worse the longer Anna is unconscious (although Disney has always played fast and loose with head trauma: see Eugene being mildly annoyed at getting knocked out several times instead of turning into a drooling retard). But basically it's because it's magic.

>>Why did the rock trolls make Anna forget Elsa had magic powers? Was there really no better way?
Yeah, this is questionable. One possibility is that Anna would try to beg Elsa to perform magic for her when Elsa knows that it's dangerous, which would stress Elsa out and make her dangerous, but considering Anna went from "let's play with magic!" to "let's play!" there's not much difference there. If the trolls had explained that Anna was somehow altered by being hit by Elsa's magic in such a way that being reminded of it would hurt her, then that would make sense. But all we got was Anna's white streak.

>>Was Elsa just locked in her room for 10 years? Seems kinda cruel.
We only see a couple moments of their lives as children and teens in Do You Want to Build a Snowman, so I personally think it's more likely that we're only shown the scenes that are thematically important instead of literally and totally true. The song is to establish Elsa's emotional isolation and Anna's longing for her, but it's likely that, while Elsa rarely, if ever, ventured outside the palace, she probably left her room in those ten years and Anna always looking at her closed door is what Anna sees of her, which is less a person and more a placeholder. And before her parents leave Elsa is seen saying goodbye to them in a room that's definitely not hers or even part of a collection of suites.
>>
>>80985695

>>If Else's gloves prevented her from using her powers why could she still freeze the water on the lake when running away? Wouldn't her shoes prevent that?
Elsa's gloves didn't prevent her from using her powers, not really. Her powers usually manifest from her hands, so by covering them her parents (or just her father) thought that "concealing" her hands would take her mind off of her powers and so let her calm down. Her gloves (unless they were silk which in many folktales and myths has anti-magical properties, but I doubt this was the case here) are more like a security blanket than a shield. Elsa's issues have always been that her negative emotions are what cause her to leak magic: compare her ease in the opening scenes where she and Anna are playing with Elsa's magic and she's totally fine versus when Anna gets hurt and suddenly Elsa's ice starts to climb the walls. The more upset and frightened Elsa gets the worse her control becomes, so the gloves are an "out of sight, out of mind" measure that failed to stop the main issue.

>>Why didn't the sisters mourn their parents' death? Did they just not know or what?
They did. In Do You Want to Build a Snowman, Anna attends her parents' funerals and then walks down the hallway to Elsa's door in funeral garb because Elsa had not been present at the funeral. She sings to Elsa about how people have been wondering where she is, and Elsa is on the other side of the door with ice radiating up the walls: the clear implication is that Elsa's grief and negative emotions are so strong right now that she cannot leave her room for fear of being discovered or hurting someone. Elsa cries into her knees and Anna mirrors the motion. The main events of the film then take place years later.
>>
>>80985695
>>Why did Kristoff's deer/elk/whatever act like a dog?
Supposedly the animators discovered that reindeers actually act rather like dogs at times, but the standard answer is because more people in the Western world have close experience with dogs than with reindeer/horses, so a lot of animals will take on dog-like characteristics so that we can relate to and care for them. Think of how Rapunzel made Maximus sit and then he started thumping his tail like a dog when she scratched him.

>>isn't the whole "Elsa unfreezes Anna through the power of love" thing kinda cliche? Like REALLY cliche?
Well, yeah, but then, it's Disney. They've kinda built their platform on true love fixing everything. They're willing to make minor changes or have characters more or less in charge of their own fates but the big overall messages don't change. And really, it wasn't Elsa unfreezing Anna's heart, it was Anna's sacrificial act of love that unfroze her heart.

>>If Kristoff was raised by rock trolls, ignoring how big of a coincidence that is, why was he seen with humans in the intro song?
Because he was born amongst humans. He got adopted by rock trolls after that song. I'm not sure why this is a question unless you forgot the order of events.

>>Why did the boat float to the top of the water after the lake unfroze? It was already underwater, not sure how more water would help.
I dunno. General buoyancy? The lake froze so quickly that the air in the compartments stayed put?

>>Why the fuck is Let it go so fucking popular? It's not even that good a song? It's by far the best song in the movie but that's not saying too much considering how lackluster the soundtrack was.
It can mean a lot of different things to different people (is it about sticking it to the people that hurt you? Expressing your true self? Is it pure happiness and freedom or is it Elsa just making herself another cage? All valid interpretations) and it's sung by the incredibly popular Idina Menzel.
>>
>>80985857
>I forgot this person, but I'm not wrong because she doesn't count, so I'm going to claim that in a land of talking seagulls and tentacled witches that bright red hair is impossible for an actual mermaid because humans can't have that hair
Yeah okay. Just accept you were wrong and move on.
>>
>>80986037
It's not even a very good song. I could name at least ten better Disney songs off the top of my head.
>>
>>80985695
I've got one:

>An act of true love is what removes Anna's affliction
>Olaf willing to melt to death for her doesn't count
>>
>>80985079
>Literally what? Anna and Elsa sister merchandise FLEW off the shelves
Yes "sister" merchandise. As in the two of them together. Of the sisters, nobody cares about Anna on her own compared to Elsa or Elsa with Anna
>>
>>80986419
Maybe the magic is very strict about what constitutes an "act". Olaf being willing is not the same as Anna actually standing in the way of Hans' blade so that it connects with her skin and would have killed her. Anna turns away from what she believes to be Kristoff's saving kiss and puts herself in harm's way, so she essentially decides twice to kill herself for her sister's sake, whereas Olaf didn't fully melt.
>>
>>80986349
I regret not putting a note in that I didn't consider Ariel a real redhead if I knew this would be an internet battle. I didn't forget her, I chose to exclude her because she doesn't look like a natural redhead (unlike Merida).

How is keeping things to one thread any worse than the now constant popup of 3-5 Zootopia threads at any given time?
>>
>>80986548
There is no evidence to say she isn't natural. Your argument that there is no evidence that she is natural is invalid. If we went by that logic we could then assume things like Elsa has a cock, Sven was really a dog at some point, and that Hans was really Mickey Mouse in disguise because THERES NO EVIDENCE SAY OTHERWISE. You can't prove a negative. Claims require evidence and you have none, sir.
>>
>>80986478
I think the act has to be a physical, first-hand expression of love. A kiss would've worked, perhaps sexual intercourse, maybe even giving birth, but in the end it was Elsa's hug that unfroze Anna.
>>
>>80986646
First of all, that was like during the first week and a half, there's only one at a time now and they've gotten significantly slower. Second, the fact that a website called snowchan had to exist at all because /frz/ got banned should tell you something more about the people who posted in /frz/ threads than having the general itself
>>
>>80986679
Elsa literally says "You sacrificed yourself for me?" to which Anna responds "I love you" and Olaf gasps "An act of true love!" with the clear implication being that Anna's saving Elsa from Hans' attack is what led to Anna's rebirth, not Elsa hugging Anna.

I'm pretty sure the directors have confirmed that as well.
>>
>>80986752
/vg/ exists. Generals are nothing new for 4chan.
>>
>>80986675
Ariel is not a natural redhead because she is a mermaid. Mermaids are half-human, half-fish. No humans naturally have Ariel's hair color. No other merfolk have Ariel's hair color or similar colors that would be considered unnatural to humans.

Just because something isn't questioned doesn't mean that any suspicion can't be true.
>>
>>80986815
I'm sorry, am I speaking to a former denizen of /frz/? So you really can't comprehend why the threads got banned? Not even a little bit?
>>
>>80986853
I do understand why they got banned on /co/ but generals exist for a reason, and that's containment. Janitors let them go for so long for that reason but considering that generals can and do often happen on 4chan means that the better option is to just make generals boards.
>>
>>80986853
General threads without regular new content devolve into smut and shitposting. After a point there really isn't anything to discuss, and constant generals just foster a toxic environment.
>>
>>80986816
You have already admitted you understand why Ariel's color scheme is unique, and that reasoning does not deal at all with the naturalness or not of her hair color.

Mermaids might visually be human and fish but since Ariel can breathe both air and water it's clear that they most definitely are not, therefore your argument that Disney treats them purely as two animals sandwhiched together and what logic applies to the top half animal must apply to the literally mythical creature is flawed.
>>
>>80986771
I don't remember the directors ever directly clarifying what was the act of true love that saved Anna. Jennifer Lee pretty much said "We know what we've made, so now it's up to the viewer to determine what we meant".

Anna's breath left her body after she completely froze & blocked the attack. That suggests she was dead.

The hug was the act of true love because it was the act Elsa was performing when Anna unfroze. Olaf suggests that the hug was an act of true love. He pretty much foreshadows it every time he is introduced.

"Hi I'm Olaf and I like warm hugs!"
>>
>>80985359
Samis are more often than not short and wiry. Kristoff looks much more like a viking than anything
>>
>>80986646
/frz/ didn't even discuss the movie, it was all about shipping and fanfics, and eventually it became completely off-topic and was just a borderline /soc/ chatroom.
>>
>>80986891
Not everything with a general needs it's own board; threads for currently airing shows, like, Starwars Rebels, or RWBY, keep the content organized in one place, easy to find, easy to post in. Not every general is MLPG.
>>
>>80986816
She is not half human and half fish she is full mermaid.
>He's a human, you're a mermaid!
Triton didn't say:
>He's a human, but you're only half Ariel.

Just because you want to believe this to be true does not make it true no matter how suspect your feels tell you. All evidence we have points to her being a completely natural magical being.
>>
>>80986891
>Making a fucking /frz/ board
Why do you think this is a good idea?

Making a board about a fucking movie, ONE movie? Are you insane?
>>
>>80986959
You may as well say that Elsa's tears are the act of true love, since that's what Elsa was doing when Anna unfroze.

How does Olaf say that a hug is true love? He likes hugs, that's it. He tells Anna before the fire that "love is about putting other people's needs before yours". Elsa's hugging Anna isn't doing that, but Anna's sacrificing herself for Elsa is very much that.
>>
>>80986957
Jeez anon, we have different views on Ariel's hair color. Take a page from this thread & let it go.

All other merfolk have natural hair colors of humans. Ariel is the only one with a hair color that is not natural to humans. Is Ariel a fish out of water who swims against the mainstream or is she a special snowflake mutant?
>>
Overrated as hell, as well as the perfect example of a good idea and setting under the wrong hands.
>>
>>80987035
No, what I mean is a /cog/, like there's a /v/ and a /vg/.
>>
>>80987076
Oh well in that case

>copying /v/ for anything at all
>>
>>80987065
All other merfolk are secondary or background characters and are supposed to fade into the background compared to the main and titular one. Again, reading way too into this because you want her to be a bottle redhead.
>>
>>80987146
You're already on 4chan, mate. There's not much higher ground you can find here. If the principle works then it should be applied.
>>
>>80987050
I won't dismiss the possibility that Elsa tearing up for Anna wasn't an act of true love. A hug is much more clear & direct though.

Olaf gasps when he realizes the act of true love was a warm hug.

The trolls knew what the cure was. They suggested that Anna & Kristoff kiss. A kiss doesn't exactly put another's needs before oneself's needs.
>>
>>80987065
She's a cartoon character. Don't treat your head-canon as something that everybody will readily agree with. For most people and I'm sure Disney as a company, she's a natural redhead.

>>

The directors confirmed that Kristoff's kiss would not have worked.
>>
The whole film would've been almost renaissance-tier if Hans was omitted and it just focused on the sister's relationship being torn apart. But instead we get a female poor-man's version of Beauty and The Beast.
>>
>>80987239
Okay, I think we've both had enough now.

But you gotta admit that color is unnatural on a human. And Ariel did become a human & retained her cherry hair.
>>
A good movie marred by the completely unnecessarily but Disney mandated merchandise opportunities.

Olaf and the singing are so out of place it's jarring.
>>
>>80987303
So are Ariel's proportions, and she kept those as a human. And her singing voice despite singing in water being totally different from singing in air.
>>
>>80987258
At the time, it would not have. Neither Kristoff nor Anna were truly in love with each other during the film.

I always thought that since it's Anna's heart that's frozen, it must be Anna's act of true love that thaws it.

Not an act someone else does for her out of their love for her. I mean someone else's love doesn't necessarily move your heart, now does it? Someone can love you very truly but it's possible you don't return the feeling at all.
I don't think a kiss would have worked either, because Anna wouldn't have kissed Kristoff as an act of her true love for him, she would have kissed him out of her own wish for self-preservation. Kristoff's love for her, again, wouldn't have mattered.

But sacrificing herself for Elsa, that was an act Anna did out of the true love she felt, and not as a selfish act of self-preservation .

>>80986959
>Jennifer Lee pretty much said "We know what we've made, so now it's up to the viewer to determine what we meant".
She said that in response to the "Is it Oaken's gay lover with their adopted kids in the Sauna" (no) hubbub, not in relation to the act of love. Please don't take quotes out of context.

>>
>>80988111
Love is a two way street, so it may have taken both Anna's cover & Elsa's hug.
>>
>>80987246
It's worse recently, because over time the Elsannafags drove most of the other people away, and as fancontent and greentext/lore/plotposting dwindled over time, all that was left was purityposting, which drove even more people away, so that in the end it was just condensed elsanna-purityfaggotry and >tfw she's not real -waifuposting.

Obviously it wasn't as bad at /co/, when more people with different tastes were around and the movie was still relatively fresh.
>>
>>80988957
>love is only true if it's returned
Naaaah I don't think so. Healthy romantic relationships, yes. Love, not necessarily.
>>
>>80988844
All you have proven is that her hair is an anomaly. It is a large stretch to say that her hair is dyed. Occam's razor that shit down. Its more likely her hair is just that way rather than bringing in a convoluted theory that she dyes her hair regularly. Did she have them maintain her treatment in the castle? Why didn't it fade? If the intent was to create a character with dyed hair, why not just show it?
