Azula is mentally unstable and her obsession with Zuko has gone from wanting to manipulate and/or kill him for her own ends to wanting to make him stronger and more ruthless than she could ever hope to be, basically she wants Zuko to be worthy of being her ruler now. She's one more loose screw away from turning this into an obsession with being his loyal and subservient wife or a desire to breed with him and produce the perfect Fire Lord from their union.

It's the sort of thing that's more of an Alternate Universe idea than a single fanfic.
The concept of a "What if Lu Ten never died?" AU is interesting, because it also means Azulon would live longer and that Iroh would be his heir, but as for how that impacts Azula, even if you have her married to Lu Ten when Aang is unfrozen, it's impossible that she and Lu Ten would have a child capable old enough to be of any use, and the Omega-Level Azula spawn is one of the more decent aspects of that timeline.
You'd have to finagle a way to make Azulon's extended reign effect the SWT enough that Katara and Sokka aren't discovering Aang at that same moment as in the show, You've probably got to push Katara and Sokka's births back 15-20 years or have their kids unearth Aang for some reason.

Possibly, Lu Ten's such a blank slate that it's hard to say what they'd be like together.
I think whatever the situation is, Azula would be different to some degree. She'd grow up in an environment in which her Dad wasn't top-dog and so much of her personality is defined by wanting to please Ozai. Ozai being behind Azulon, Iroh and Lu Ten in line to the throne would somewhat limit his influence over her, though if Azulon's still Fire Lord, that wouldn't necessarily be for the best.

If only these comics came out sooner, they could do a whole lot more with this concept. They've tried to set Azula up as a recurring villain, but the way they release these comics just doesn't permit this. At this rate, it won't be until 2017 that we'll see anything come of this new direction for Azula's character and they may decide to bury it when that time comes so they can focus on other things. While, if you had a monthly series with branching stories, it would be easy to devote plenty of time to Azula pushing Zuko's buttons and whatever else other people are doing.
If you ask me, they should really be releasing one volume per year of side stories along with these main trilogies.

Could be interesting. It's hard to say what Iroh was like before Lu Ten's death, so it's hard to say what impact removing him would or wouldn't have on life in the Palace.
With regards to altering the SWT, it's probable that the FN would conquer Ba Sing Se had Lu Ten and Iroh lived, and I can only imagine that would alter the FN strategy. Perhaps they divert more troops away from the SWT in order to secure BSS, meaning the Water Tribes can fish in more coastal waters and not have to search inland for fishing (where Aang was)
