Has great character animation for a non-Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks/Blue Sky flick.

Shame about the potty humor and the fedoralord religious theme.

Will definitely pirate.
>>
Seems like a concept that is funny only in trailer length format and would quickly lose its whatever humor it has if dragged on for two hours.

The logistics of it raise a few questions, honestly.

If being eaten is death to them, what is going bad and rotting? How are they born? Does their consciousness begin at some point after being manufactured? What about food that is sold already cut up, like cheese sticks? Did that involve cutting up a living block of cheese? Is he dead now, or does he live on as several living sticks?
>>
>>80927204
not to mention that sometimes packages are alive and sometimes the food in them. it's a complete mess
>>
>>80927204
It doesn't work. Mold / expiring results in death in the movie.

They didn't really think it out.
>>
>>80923810

God, those designs are nightmarish. The potato in particular... Makes you want them to get eaten...
>>
>>80927204
it's a magical store, everything on its shelves gains a kind of sentience after spending a night inside. Expiring = death.

It isn't just the store - there are other products in the world that have sentience as well.

After watching it again I think that is the point. Kind of a anticutsey movie with lots and lots of gore.

Like an American attempt at gore/social commentarty/fetish at the level of the Japanese ie itchi the killer and attack on Titan.

that look so painfully unfunny.

A Foodfight reboot with swearing. Animation is dead.

The only reason people will go see the movie is the novelty of an R-rated animated feature filled with cursing and violence. If it succeeds, it'll be because of the prevailing attitude that cartoons are for kids rather than in spite of it.

Why are adult animations always crude comedy?

Personally, I think it looks like complete shit. The theme completely lacks creativity and the humor is crude at best. I think they are relying mostly on shock value, and that's not really the kind of shit I find funny.

I don't really think it will do well either. I mean I don't know for sure, but I think most of the people going to these CGI movies are parents taking their kids. Since parents can't take their kids to see this movie then who's going to go see it? Highschool/college stoners? Probably would, but I don't think they'd choose this movie over some other good ones that will be out at the time.

I think this would be better off just going straight to Netflix tbqhf

>EVAN GOLDBERG: No one has ever ripped apart these Pixar movies like we’re going to, and it’s such a great platform to mock something because it’s the most embraced new form of movies. Everyone likes going to see WALL-E and Frozen and those movies. Everyone knows what they’re like, so now we get to fuck around with that. And it’s awesome when just everyone understands. This Is the End is great and I love it, but not everyone got it. People were like “I don’t understand,” and “I don’t know these actors.” But this: everyone knows Pixar. And we’re just kind of taking all the conventions of children’s movies, and making them disgusting and insane, which is something I’m very proud of.

Yeah generally when you put the quality second to delivering a message the quality suffers.

Only FF had that "So bad it's good" charm like ridiculous plot, characters, and script. As well as it's bizarre production history.
>>
>>80934133

They and some of the reviewers are really acting like this is the FIRST fucking thing EVER to parody or comment on the stupidity of the Disney "everything is sentient" cliche.

Disney ITSELF has made fun of little talking woodland creatures and magical objects many, many times for decades, and a fuckton of other things have too. Yes, it's stupid and horrifying to think about. No, this is not the first time by far that people have noticed and gone, "dude, wouldn't it be fucked up if toys actually were alive and shit, hahahaha if you showed it realistically it'd be hilarious." Have these people just all been living in a fucking cave?

Holy fuck, I found it.

It was an episode of "Tales from the Darkside."

From here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0716958/reviews

>Out of all the episodes from 'Tales From the Darkside, THIS is the one I remember the most from my childhood. I have no clue why it was this particular episode, but for some reason it just stuck with me all of these years later.

Chubby telemarketer Betsy (Sharon Madden) is such a reclusive loner she has nightly talks with her plants in between harassing people over the telephone. When her nerdy, bald high school flame Elmo (Larry Gelman) comes back into the picture wanting to sweep her off her feet, Betsy decides she needs to lose a few pounds. One day out of the blue she gets a phone call from a mysterious company called "Your Weight Is Over." Next thing she knows a package is delivered to her door. Inside is a hearing aid. In a crowded restaurant, she slips the device in and from that point on can hear food literally screaming in agony as it's being eaten. Hey, it DOES ends up successfully making her lose her appetite for the night. In fact, she passes out from the shock.

A few days later, she receives a package from the same company. This time it's a pair of eye glasses. As soon as she slips them on, she can see faces on the food. A pear, banana and apple sitting on the desk (all with sad-looking expressions) plead "Please don't eat us!" over and over again. Then they become friends. Each piece of fruit has a personality of its own. The pear has a female southern belle voice, the banana has a grating New York accent and the apple, naturally, is the intellectual of the group. Before long, Betsy's had enough of this program and tries to take the glasses off. Uh oh. They won't come off... and the hearing aid won't come out either. Will she ever be able to eat again or will she have to "murder" one of her new buddies?

If you look at the details and think about how stupid the individual lines of dialogue are, the trailer comes off awful. But most people are really, really, really bad at picking things apart and looking at the components in a critical fashion. They only come away with the 'big picture', and the overall concept of a disney movie suddenly going dark is funny enough to sustain a 2 minute trailer. Again, these people aren't great at thinking critically so they don't really consider that the joke would get old over a 90 minute screentime, they're just clapping like seals at the joke in the trailer.

http://screencrush.com/sausage-party-review/

A lot of lines from the script are used in the trailer. Also, this guy ( http://screencrush.com/sausage-party-review/ ) saw a screener and references several things from the script, like a wad of gum that rides in a wheelchair and acts like a Stephan Hawking knockoff and the PTSD honey mustard. There's also a few things that don't quite match up (I don't remember any meta jokes about other food movies being better in the script, but that could be a visual reference or something added in last minute) but on the whole the people who've seen it already are describing it like the script describes.
>>
>>80924149
Just finished all 104 pages. It really is just one long Robot Chicken sketch. The humor is all obvious and uncreative. Most of the "jokes" are just "food originates from this country, therefore it acts like a broad, stereotypical version of the people from said country.
>>
>>80939632
I find it astounding that they used up half of the main cast for one retarded racial joke. I realize that they don't think they have to try because it's a retard stoner comedy but come the fuck on, you don't dedicate the main characters to a single joke (unless you've got a huge cast of one joke characters like harvey birdman), you make them broad spectrums that can be used for many jokes in different situations. As it stands one half of the cast actually does shit and enables jokes and the other half just sits around with their thumbs stuck up their ass doing literally nothing but screaming at each other for the entire movie, completely divorced from everything that's going on around them. Hell, at one point, the focus switches to them literally just standing there and watching and doing nothing while plot unfolds in front of them.

The one big joke this movie has going for it, is that it's a children's film that suddenly and jarringly goes dark and adult without warning. The humor is in making the transition as abrupt and unexpected and shocking as possible.

So, naturally, someone calls someone else a 'fuck' by the fourth line and a 'bitch' by the fifth. Fifteen seconds into the movie and the joke's ruined.

Man, if they could have only managed to do that and play it like a straight Pixar film right up until the horrific reveal, that'd make the complaints from inattentive parents accidentally bringing their kids to see it so much better. Now we're going to have them leaving the theater before the good stuff even gets a chance to scar them.

The problem is animation is too expensive to be worth attempting to dedicate a mature and thoughtful script to. With CGI it's a bit easier, but usually it's still cheaper to just have live action for the most part and certain scenes be CGI, like in Birdman.

A story like Anomalisa almost requires animation, not just because the vast majority of the cast is identical, but also because it expands the alienation and feeling of otherness experienced by the protagonist. You feel like you're witnessing a delusional experience of the world.

Europe and Japan tend to be creative with animation and a desire for certain elements or style precede or are developed alongside the script, for example Paprika.

It's also better to use animation for science fiction and fantasy, as you're not exactly worried about whether the special effects look good alongside the live action segments because it's all one unified artstyle given animation. However, not true in the west, where Hollywood has little problem giving big budgets or using talent from all around the world for its science fiction. Japan's sci fi is limited to animation or using rubber suited actors tearing up toy cities. Hollywood can produce Blade Runner, Star Wars, Alien, etc.

So in conclusion, there's a reason why America produces animation of a certain kind and the rest of the world produces animation of multiple kinds. In America, a script for a science fiction movie can find a budget for good special effects; but a serious drama cannot justify a budget for animation and thus serious works are relegated to live action as well.

And that's not even getting to public perceptions of animation as juvenile. Not even South Park and the Simpsons has changed that, they just made it juvenile in a crude way.

Why does a religion metaphor need to even exist in this movie? It literally could've been them thinking they were gonna be adopted, like they were equating themselves to being like pets at a shelter. Get too old and you're thrown away, so get bought when you're fresh.

CGI/VFX costs a truckload of cash.

Attitudes like this are why animation for adults is nonexistent in the US. Animation is a medium, not a genre. You can tell any kind of story with animation, just as you can with live action.

>And that's not even getting to public perceptions of animation as juvenile. Not even South Park and the Simpsons has changed that, they just made it juvenile in a crude way.
If you shunt animation into a certain narrow category or believe that it's only appropriate for certain genres or types of stories, it's no wonder the public percieves animation this way. Which then contributes to the vicious cycle that the Amercian animation industry has found itself in.

Make it stop-motion with real food and focus on the existential horror of experiencing the limbo between being sapient but made of dead organic matter. That's not getting into the fact that the purpose of life for them is literally to be consumed.

Somehow try to market it as a kid-friendly movie and put in the scary stuff a third of the way through.

You could probably get away with having it be PG if the only gore was food-based. Which further reinforces the disconnect the viewing public experiences when they see animated nonhumans.

When their friends are consumed by the humans, they explicitly say they're being "eaten", so the food has an idea of what "eating" is despite having no (prior) knowledge that humans eat food.

Therefore, it's reasonable to assume that the food themselves eat something. What DO they eat? Is this sub-food sentient as well, or quasi-sentient like the food is to the humans?

There's a part in the script where they stop and focus on her crotch because her pants have wedged up and she's got a camel toe. Except, they don't actually name her in the dialogue at any point, so even the thin excuse for a joke is completely lost, it's just a bizarre moment of focusing on a woman's vagina through her pants while she adjusts them. It's like they were stoned while writing the script and forgot that the audience can't actually see the name tags beside the speech.

With the exception of a few aspects of observe and report being similar to Falling Down, none of his movies are particularly deep, they are just stoner movies.

Also, he's a Jew, so take that for what it's worth if it matters to you.
